Description

JOHN COLE.
Improvement in Land Rolle rs" "No.'l2l',157. Patented Nov.2l,l87'l;.
Witnesses:
\ Inventor UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN COLE, OF FREDERICKSBUBG, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAND-ROLLERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN COLE, of Fredericksburg, in the county of Chickasaw and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Roller; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a land-roller, as
will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its con-- struction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of my machine.
A and B B represent three rectangular frames, in which the rollers O and D D, respectively, are placed. These frames with their rollers are ar ranged in the manner shown in Fig. 2that is, the frame A with its roller 0 in front, and the frames B B with their rollers D D on each side and in rear of the frame A. From the front side of each frame B, nearer the inner end, extends a bar, E. This bar E does not extend at right angles with the frame, but is slightly inclined toward the inner end of the same. A rod, Gr, passes from near the outer end of the frame B through the front end of the bar E, and immediate] y on the other side of said bar the rod is attached to the projecting end of the front bar of the front frame A. Another rod, H, connects each frame B with the rear bar of the frame A.
It will be noticed that, by the connections of the frames A and B B as thus arranged, the rear rollers D D do not run parallel with the front rollers (l, but they are slightly turned inward, which reduces the draft. On the frame A, above the roller 0, is arranged the drivers seat I, and on the hind frames B B, above the rollers D D, are arranged boxes J J to contain dirt or other material to equalize the weight of the driver. Thetongue K is attached and braced, in any suitable manner, to the front of the frame A.
The rollers being set in separate frames attached by the connecting-bars, each roller works independently of the others. They will. work on rough oruneven ground equally as well as on smooth ground, and, when meeting any obstruc tion, the side rollers can be raised so as to pass over the same without going around them.
The operator can roll heavily or lightly by carrying weights in the boxes or running empty to suit the ground.
The rollers can readily be taken apart by unscrewing a few burrs, and the center roller is then ready to roll walks or narrow places.
Having thus fully described m y invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the frames A and B B, bars E E, and rods G G and H H, and the rollers OD D, constructed and arranged as described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of September, 1871.
JOHN COLE.
