Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
JOHN FREDERICK BRODE, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.A
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-BRAKES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,150, dated November 2l, 1871.
To all whom 1f-may concern:
Be it kn own that I, J oEN FREDERICK BRODE, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Car-Brakes; and I do hereby de- Clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon. p
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of my device in plan view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudina-l vertical section of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a car-brake, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Arepresents the frame-work; B B, the wheels and C, the shaft or axle at one end of a car. D is an inclined screw, provided at its upper end with a hand-wheel, E, said screw passing through a box formed in the frame A, and having a collar, a, placed within said box, so that the screw cannot be moved either up or down, although it can readily be turned in either direction. The lower end of the screw D passes through a box, b, with female screw in the center of the brakebar G, upon each end of which is the shoe e. Guide-rods d d also pass through the brake-bar G, said rods being secured to the frame A and surrounded above the bar with spiral springs j' j', as shown in Fig. l. The screw D is used to force the brake against the car-Wheels.
The drawing accompanying this specilication and making a part thereof represents a subsidiary brake,A consisting mainly of a lever, bolt, and knuckle. This it is my purpose to illustrate and claim in another application to be hereafter iled,
and therefore do not claim the same in this patent; but
What I claim as my invention is- The combination of the inclined screw D, collar a, box b, brake-bar G, shoes e, guide-rods d, and spring f, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J. FR. BRODE.
