To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HUBERT A. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Toy; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to amusement devices, and particularly to a toy.
The object of my invention is the provision of an improved toy which is operable by successive pulls on a string, comprising a part thereof, to cause a figure carried by the string to have successive climbing movements up the same.
The invention is fully described in the following specification,-and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred and one modified embodiment thereof are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are front elevations of the preferred form of a toy embodying the invention, with the legs in extended and retracted positions, respectively. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a different form of the invention, with the legs and arms extended; and Fig. 4: is an edge view of the rope guide for the hands.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of a figure, which is preferably but not necessarily that of a man, and is cut from pasteboard or other suitable material of a stiff nature. Arms 2, 2 project upward from the body, with the hands thereof disposed over the head in the attitude of grasping a vertically disposed cord 3. The cord slides through a guide 4; (see Fig. 4) provided at the back of the hands. 5, 5 designates the legs of the figure, which are pivoted to the body, as at 6, to swing in a common plane, are each pivotally jointed at the knee, as at 7, and are pivotally connected together at their lower extremities, as at 8, with the feet crossed. It is thus evident that the legs may be extended, as shown in Fig. l, or folded with the feet drawn up adjacent to the body,
as shown in Fig. 2. An elastic member 9 connects the lower end of the body 1 to the lower ends of the legs, being preferably attached to the latter at the point of connection 8 thereof, and serves to normally retain the legs in the retracted or drawn-up position shown in Fig. 2. The cord 3 extends down through a guide-loop or eye 10 secured to the front side of a body near its lower end centrally thereof, thence loosely through similar guides 11 and 12 secured, in the present instance, to the front l of the crossed legs 5, 5, the former being disposed intermediate the pivots 7 and 8 and the latter at the opposite side of the pivot 8 on the toe portion of the foot. In the operation of this form of the invention the upper end of the cord is firmly anchored to any suitable stationary part and the operator then imparts successive downward pulls on the lower end of the cord, each downward pull causing a straightening out of legs from the folded or drawn-up position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1. The tension which is imparted to the cord 3 when pulled causes sufficient friction to be set up between the cord and the guides 11 and 12 to prevent a slipping of the cord therethrough so that as the legs straighten the body portion of the figure is caused to climb up a distance on the cord substantially equal to the distance of movement of the guide 11 below the knee pivot 7 of the legs, the hand-guide 4t sliding upward on the cord during such movement. When the tension on the cord is released to permit the legs to draw up to their folded position under the action of the elastic 9, the figure is prevented from moving down on the cord by reason of the frictional engagement of the cord by the guide 4.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 3 the construction and climbing action of the figure are the same as that above described except that the arms are jointed for movement similar to the movement of the legs, and connected to the legs, whereby the legs and arms will be caused to have outward extending and retracting movements in unison, thus adapting them to alternately act on the cord to impart successive climbing movements to the figure. In this form of the invention, 13, 13 designate the arms, which are respectively pivoted to the body, as at 14:, and are pivotally jointed at the elbows to permit a folding and extension of the arms to facilitate the climbing action. The arms are crossed and pivoted together, as at 15, and one is provided with a frictional guide for the cord 3 similar to the guide 1 shown in Fig. 4E. The inner end of one of the arms 12 is provided with an extension 16, which is movably connected through the medium of a link 17 to an extension 18 on the inner end of the leg 5 on the same side of the figure therewith. It is evident, with this manner of connecting the legs and arms, that the arms will be drawn downward into folded position when the legs are drawn upward to their folded position, and vice versa. It will be understood in the operation of this form of the invention that when a pull is exerted on the lower end of the cord,3 the legs 5 and arms 13 will be extended in opposite directions from the body, the movement of the legs in frictional coaction with the cord causing the figure to climb a predetermined distance upward on the cord. When the cord is released the elastic member 9 draws the legs upward and the arms downward, and the frictional coaction of the guide 4; with the cord during the downward 'movement of the arms causes an upward movement of the body with respect to the cord.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y 1. In a toy, a cord, a figure guided by said cord for movements lengthwise thereof, jointed foldable members pivotally attached to one end of said figure and having guides spaced lengthwise of the members through which said cord passes whereby a pull on one end of the cord will impart an unfolding movement to said members and a movement to the figure lengthwise of the cord, said guides being spaced transversely of the figure when said members are folded, and
copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the means normally retaining said members in folded relation to the figure.
2. In a toy, a cord, a figure having a j ointed member pivotally attached to one end thereof, said figure having guides through which said cord passes and said member having guides provided on and spaced longitudinally of the lower jointed part thereof for said cord to pass through and to have frictional coaction with the cord when the member is being unfolded by an outward pull on the cord, and means acting on said member to normally retain it in folded relation to the figure. w n
3. In a toy, a cord, a figure guided for lengthwise movements on said cord and having sliding frictional engagement therewith,
a leg member pivotally connected to one end of said figure and having a knee joint to permit an upward drawing of the foot portion of the leg member with respect to said figure, said leg member having a plurality of guides through which said cord passes and located in spaced relation longitudinally of said member and below the knee-joint thereof, and means acting on said member to normally retain it in folded relation to the figure.
