Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 9, 1917.
Application filed July 27, 1915. Serial No. 42,213.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS H. BOLTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Slippery Rock, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stops, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to a new and improved stop of that type generally employed in connection with high pressure conduits.
It is a-well' known fact that in oil countries, gas fields, and even in ordinary water lines, great difliculty is encountered in operating the stops, especially when they have not been used for some time. It is the usual practice to hammer the stop, or rather the core, with some sharp instrument with view of loosening the same to some extent and while this operation will in time loosen the stop it has been found that the core is often broken and in the majority of instances that the threads are distorted to such an extent whereby they are of practically no further use.
It is, therefore, the main object of my invention to provide improved means to facili-- tate the actuation of the core so that the operation above pointed out will be eliminated, to the end that the longevity of the device is materially increased.
A-further object of my invention is-to provide a device of the type in question that consists of but a few simple parts whereby it is believed that the same may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
Various other objects and advantages will become apparent during the continuance of the following description;
The above and other objects which will become apparent, are accomplished by such means as are shown in their preferred form in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

The body portion 10 has a pair of internally screw threaded sleeves 11 and 12 respectively projecting radially therefrom as clearly shown in Fig.1. The body portion is further provided with a tapering cut-out 13 which communicates with the horizontal bore 14. The lower portion of the body 10 may be exteriorly screw threaded as at 15.
The core 16 is tapered throughout its length to fit snugly within the cut-out 13 and is provided with the usual opening 17. At its upper end, the core 16 carries a squared projection 18 which is usually engaged by a wrench or other similar tool in order to facilitate turning thereof, while at its lower end an exteriorly screw threaded extension 19 is carried. Here it will be noted that the screw threads on the exten sion 19 are cut in an opposite direction to the screw threads on the lower portion of the body 10.
The bur 20 has a screw threaded opening 21 formed therein for the reception of the lower screw threaded end of the body portion 10, while a second oppositely screwthreaded cut-out 22- is provided for the reception of the extension 19. The function performed by this bur is thought to be readily obvious.
The parts are normally in the position shown in Fig. 1. By reason of its peculiar construction the core 16 invariably binds in the cut-out 13, thus causing the operator considerable.inconvenience when desiring to p In the event that the operator desires to turn the core, the bur 20 is turned in a desired direction and as it is screwed upon the lower portion of the body 10 the core will be forced slightly upwardly from its seat thus effectually loosening the same and allowing the operator to quickly turn it to the desired position. It will be entirely clear that as soon as the core has been turned to the desired position the operator may again manipulate the bur 20 in order to draw the core into tight-fitting engagement with its seat.
From the foregoin it is believed that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily understood and therefore further detailed description is deemed unnecessary. V
In reducing my invention to practice I find that the form referred to herein as the most practical and preferred embodiment is the most efiicient, but realizing that certain conditions Will necessarily vary in concurrence With the adoption of my device, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construction and in the proportion of parts may be resorted to when required Without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a stop; a casing having a longitudinal conducting bore, said casing being further provided With a through receiving bore intersecting said conducting bore, a valve plug said plug, a bur adjustably mounted on said casing having a threaded aperture to receive said threaded extension, whereby upon movement of said bur said plug may be moved longitudinally in said receiving bore, as and for the purpose specified.
