To all whom it may (01m 11 Be it, known that l, h'niox 1C. Lian-1v. a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Union Hill, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey. have invented a new and Improved Ventilator. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact. descrip tion.
My invention relates to a ventilator more especially adapted for use above the upper sash of a window when the said upper sash is partly lowered.
Objects of the invention are to provide a ventilator of the indicated character so eonstrut-ted and arranged as to he acconnnodated between the window frame members. in vertical alinement with the upper sash: to provide a ventilator that will automatically adjust itself to windows and window frames of different widths and firmly retain itself in the frame, independently of the sash; to provide a ventilator which in the adjusted position will present no interference with the sash cords and pulleys; to provide a. ventilator of the indicated character having provision for receiving screen material at a face thereof and having a shutter to effect a complete closure or a pan tial closure of the ventilator; and to provide operating means for the. shutter opcrative from the, inside of the. room and adapted to be. so disposed as to present no projections to interfere with shades or curtains.

In constructing a practical embodiment of my invention in accordance with the illustrated example. an oblong rectangular frame 10 is provided and an auxiliary member 11 in longitudinal alinement with the frame 10. The extension number 11 of the ventilator frame is provided with pins 14 in rigid relation thereto which extend through holes 13 in the adjacent end of the frame 10 to the interior of the latter. At their inner ends the guide pins It are connected by a bar 16 and a retractile spring 17 is connected at one end with thd bar 16 by a pin 18. At the opposite end the siring is connected with the adjacent member of the frame 10 'by a pin 19, or the like, the. bar 16 having a hole 20 receiving the end of the spring, and the end member of the frame 10 having a hole 21 to receive the spring. The bar 16 has guided movement in longitudinal slots formed in the inner faces of the top and bottom bars of the frame 10. The joint between the frame 10 and the extension member 11 is closed by a cover plate 23 secured to the extension member 11 and slidable on the frame 10.
By the described construction the extension member 11 may be adjusted relatively to the. frame 10 to vary the total length of the ventilator according to the width of the window. the spring 17-normally tending to carry the extension member 11 outwardly so that the said extension member and the opposite end of the frame 10 will be firmly pressed against the window frame to sustain the ventilator in position above the sash A independently of the latter. The frame 10 is covered by screen material 24, preferably wire mesh, to exclude insects while permitting the passage of air through the frame. At this outer side I provide a shutter to effect a complete closure or a partial closure of the frame, whereby to exclude the passage of air or to regulate the same. The shutter 26 is preferably of sheet metal and is hinged at its upper end as at 27 to the top bar of the frame 10 to have movement on the latter. Conswinging at its lower edge as adapted to enter any one of t through the ventilator to the inner side thereof whereby the shutter may be controlled from the room. In the illustrated form a transverse slot 29 is formed in the bottom bar of the frame 10 to permit movement of the operating bar. At the bottom of the slot 29 the latter is closed by a plate 82 which is upturned, the edge 31 being 10 series of note es 30 in the operating bar 28' to hold the utter 26 in any given adjustment. The operating'bar has pivotal movement at 26' on the shutter whereby to engage or disenga e the flange or lip 31.
t is im ortant, since the shutter is to be operated rom the inside, that the operating rod 28 or its equivalent will not present any rejection at the inside of the window wherey to interfere with shades or curtains, and revent such interference the inner portion 28 of the said rod is hinged as at 33 to the outer iolztion. Therefore, when the shutter is in t e closed position and the major portion of the rod 28 at the inside of the wirn dow, the inner portion mav be folded flat against the ventilator as indicated in dotted lines in lfi A.
It 'wlll e seen that the ventilator provides for the admission of air at the top of the window and the proper screening 01' the opening without the necessity of putting up complete screens at the exterior of the window, and that the invention may be readil applied to any window and maintaine in place without adventitious securin devices.
aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A window ventilator including a frame presenting longitudinal bars and end bars, an extension member at an end of said frame, parallel lateral guide pins projecting from theinner face of the said extension member, the said pin slidably extending through the adjacent end but of the frame, a vertical connecting bar joining thfc' inner ends of said pins within the frame, the lon itudinal members of the frame having alined recesses in their opposed faces and the ends of the said vertical connecting bar extending into said recesses and, having sliding movement therein, and an expansion spring secured at one end to said veriical connecting bar and at its opposite end to the adjacent, end bar of the frame.
