Be it known that I, JosnPH EDWARD Hos KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to candle extinguishers and more particularly to thatclass of such devices adapted to operate auto matically when the candle has burned down to a certain point, in order to extinguish the same, and has for its primary object the provision of a device of the character set forth which shall be adapted to operate to cause the lighted candle to be extinguishedwithout any attention from the outside, in order to prevent danger from the burning wick.

W'ith the foregoing and other objects in view as will from time to time hereinafter appear, this invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the various cooperating elements of a candle extinguisher as hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a portion of this specification illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention and in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts wherever used, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 is a detail section on a larger scale showing the operation; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective on a large scale of a portion of the extinguishing mechanism.

-11 designates a base formed of any suitable material, preferably sheet metal, provided with a protecting extension or back 5 having a suspension opening 6, the base 4: being provided with candle holding means 7 adapted to receive the candle 8. The bearing block 9 on the base 4 slidably carries a rod 10 adapted to engage the periphcry of the candle 8 through the medium of a slot formed in the candle holding member 7, the rod 10 being bent upon itself at 1.1 and 12 to form av handle member 13, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained, a straight portion 14 extending from the bend l2 and being provided with a second bend 15 extending parallel to the member 10.

Pivotally mounted in a bracket 16 by means of a. rod 17 and a nut 18 is an L- shapedrn'iember 19 carrying upon the head eXtension asnu'fling cap 20. A leaf, spring 21 secured by means of rivets 22 to the protector back 5 is placed in such position as to permit its free end 23 to extend between the legs of the bracket 16 and to bear against the portion 1 1 of the member 10 to normally force the member 10 forwardly and into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. -T he portion 15 of the member 10 engages the rear face of the L member 19 at a point just above the pivot 17.

The operation of the device is as follows: By means of the handle 18 the member 10 is pushed rearwardly toward the back 5 sliding in the bearing block 9 which causes the end of the member 10 adapted to engage the slot in the candle holding means 7 to retract enough to permit of the insertion of the candle whereupon the parts will assume the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, due to the fact that the end of the member 10 is unable to move forwardly as it is in contact with the periphery of the candle. The L member 19 is then swung upwardly into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, and when the candle burns down below the level of the candle holding member 7 and below the point at which the outer end of the member 10 engages the periphery thereof the spring 23 will force the member 10 by means of contact with the member ll into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the member 15 causing the L-shaped member 19 to move about its pivot17, and thus to fall by gravity into the'position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 to extinguish the flame of the candle.

I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.

Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base, candle holding means thereon, a stationary bearing adjacent said means, a rod extending through said bearing and normally in engagement with said candle, a handle formed on said rod, a spring adapted tocause a forward movement of said rod, candle extinguishing means in engagement with said rod whereby disengagement of said rod with said candle Wlll cause sald sprlng to move said rod forwardly to operate sald extlnguishing means.

2. in a device of the character described, the combination with a base having an extension, candle holding means on the base, a bearing block on the base, a rod mounted in said block and adapted to engage a candie, a spring on said extension in engagement with said rod, a bracket on said extension, candle extinguishing means carried by said bracket and in engagement with said rod whereby disengagement of said rod from said candle will cause said spring to cause a forward movement thereof to actuate said extinguishing means.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a base formed with an extension candle holding means, a hearextension in engagement with the vertical portion of said rod whereby disengagement of the rod from the candle will cause a forward movement thereof under the action of the spring to operate the extinguishing means.

t. ln a device of the character described, the combination with a base having an extension, candle holding means, a bearing block, a rod mounted in said bearing block and normally in engagement with a candle, said rod being bent to form av handle, a ver tieal portion and a horizontal portion, a bracket on said extension, candle extinguishing means pivotally mounted on said bracket and in engagement with the horizontal portion of said rod and a spring in engagement with the vertical portion of said rod to cause a forward movement thereof when disengaged from said candle to operate said extinguishing means.
