being to effect simultaneous release of the driven members of the group and to simplify the construction and operation of the device. 7

The stop motion device constituting the before noted invention of Robert W. Scott employed a plurality of adjoining driving pulleys each equipped with a stop motion device and having the parts so disposed that the actuation of the stopping devices of one pulley also caused actuation of the stopping devices of the adjoining pulley, and my invention has in view the same general object. Referring in the first instance to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, 1 represents part of the framework of a machine to be driven, said framework being provided with a sleeve 1' in which is free to rotate a shaft 2 whereby power is transmitted to the machine. There are two driving pulleys 12 and 13, and
l a loose pulley 14, the member driven by-the pulley 12 consisting, in the present instance, of a spur pinion-12 free to rotate on the sleeve 1 and having a notched disk 12, and
the driven member which cooperates with the pulley 13 consisting of a sleeve 13 in driving connection with the shaft 2 and having a notched disk 13". My invention, however, is not limited to a device in which the driven members are of this type as such driven members may vary without departing from the essential features of my invention.
The hub of the ulley 12 rotates freely on the sleeve 1 and t e hub of the pulley 13 rotates freely on the sleeve 13 and rotatably mounted in the pulley 12 is a stop ring 15 having disposed throughout its outer periphery notches l5 for the entrance of a stop finger 16, the latter being mounted on the frame of the machine and being thrown into and out of stopping position either automatically or by hand- In the inner periphery of the ring 15 is a notch 15 which, when the parts are running normally, receives the head of a stud '17, said stud being adapted to an inclined slot 18 formed in the web of the pulley 12, as shown in Figs. 3 to 6 and 12, said studbeing also in pivotal connection, through the medium of a link 19, with a lug 20 projecting-from the periphery of a ring 21, the latter being located on the inner side of the web of the pulley 12 and mounted so as to be free to turn on the hub of said pulley, as well asto slide longitudinally thereon. On the opposite face of the web of the pulley 12 is pivotally mounteda lever 22 so as to be free to swing in a plane parallel with the face of said web, one arm of said lever being adapted to engage one or other of the'notches in the periphery of the disk 12", such engagement being normally caused by the action of a spring 23 upon the other arm ofsaid lever 22, as shown in Fig. 3.
In the web of the pulley 12 are a series of equidistantly disposed conical recesses 24 and projecting from that face of the ring 21 which'is adjacent to the web of the pulley 12 are a similar series of conical studs 25 which, when the pulley12 is in driving conslot and free to swing longitudinally therein is a pivoted dog 27 having a projecting tooth 27* and a nose 27 pro ectmg beyond the tooth. When the pulley 13 is in driving connection with the drivenmember 13 the tooth 27 occupies one of the notches in said member 13", the nose 27 of the dog, at such time, bearing against the outer face of the ring 21 when said ring is close to the web of the pulley, 12, as shown in Fig.1.
When the pulleys 12 and 13 are in engagement with their respective driven members the parts occupy the positions shown in 'Figs. 1, 3, 5 and 7, the lever 22-being in engagement with the driven member '12", the dog 27 being in engagement with the driven member 13", the stop ring 15 rotatingwith the, pulley 12, the stud 17 occupying the forward end of the slot 18 in the web of said pulley 12, the head of said stud 17 occupying the'internal notch 15 in the stop ring 15, as shown in Fig. 3, and the ring 21 being close to the web of the pulley 12 with its conical studs 25 seated in the conical recesses 24 in said web, as shown in Fig. 1. If, however, the stop finger 16 is thrown into one of the external notches 15 of the stop ring 15 the rotation of the latter with the pulley 12 will be arrested and contact of the head of the stud 17 with the forward wall of the notch 15 will temporarily arrest the forward movement of said stud with the pulley 12 and will cause the cam slot 18 to so act upon said stud as to move the same toward the axis of the pulley, out.
of engagement with the forward wall of the notch 15 of the stop ring 15, and into engagement with the inner periphery of said ring, whereby it is retained in such inwardly moved position, as shown in Fig. 4.
During its inward movement the head of the stud 17 presses upon one arm of the lever 22, thereby withdrawing its other arm from the notch of the driven member 12", and freeing the latter from rotative engagement with the pulley 12. The stoppage inthe forward movement of the stud 17 also, by reason of the link connection 19 between said stud and the lug 20 on the ring 21, caused like stoppage in the rotative movement of the latter, whereby, owing to the cam-like action of the conical recesses 24 in the web of the pulley 12 upon the conical studs 25 on the inner face of the ring 21, the latter was thrust away from the web of the pulley 12 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2 Such movement caused the ring 21 to press upon the nose 27 of the dog 27 and swing said dog longitudinally so as to withdraw its tooth 27 from engagement with the notch of the driven member 13*, thereby freeing the lat-' ter from rotative engagement with the pulley 13, as shown in Fig. 2, and the driving and driven members will remain in this disconnected relation until the pulley 12, after being freed from its driving belt, is turned backwardly until the head of the stud 17- is again in line with the notch 15 and is caused to enter the same by the cam action of the slot 18, contact, of the abrupt rear wall of the notch 15 with the head of the stud forcing said stud to the front end of the slot. This permits the lever 22 under the action of the spring 23 to resume its driving connection with the driven member 12 and restores the ring 21 to a position in which its studs 25 again enter the recesses 24 and the ring again approaches the Web of the pulley 12, thus permitting the dog 27, under the influence of the spring 28, to again resume the position shown in Fig. 1, with'its tooth 27* in engagement with one of the notches of the driven member 13 The front wall of the notch 15 has a beveled inner corner to prevent shock and jar by contact of the stud 17 therewith during the time that the pulley 12 is running after stoppage of the member 12 and before the shifting of the belt.
As the movement of the dog 27 which effects release of the pulley 13 from the driven member 13 is practically simultaneous with the movement of the lever 22 which effects release of the pulley 12 from the driven member 12*, the stoppage of both of said driven members is practically simultaneous and their reengagement with their respective driving'pulleys is also practically simultaneous. In this respect my invention is distinct from that of R. W. Scott before referred to and upon which this invention is based. In the device shown in the Scott application each pulley had its own stop member and the arrest of movement of the stop member of one pulley caused'release of the driven member of said pulley and also the arrest of the stop member of the adjoining pulley, the release of the driven member of the latter pulley necessitating movement of the driving member of said pulley in respect to the stop member after the arrest of the latter, consequently the release of the driven member of the second pulley was effected subsequently to the vrelease of the driven member of the first pulley, with a definite time interval between such releases, whereas in my device the release of the driven m mbers of both pulleys is simultaneous.
The outward movement of the ring 21 from theposition shown in Fig. 1 to thatv shown in Fig. 2 is effected without corresponding movement of the link 19, the projecting pin 30, whereby said link is connected to the lug 20 of the ring 21, sliding through the opening in the link, as the ring 20 is shifted (see Figs. 10 and 11). A concentric segmental slot 31 is formed in the web of the pulley 12 for the reception of;
the projecting portion of the pin 30 when the ring 21 is adjusted close up to .the web, as in Fig. 10.
In order to simplify the pivoting of the dog 27 in the slot 26 formed in the web of the pulley 13, said web has a groove 32, wlth segmental base, milled in one face of the same and the dog 27 has a pin 33 passed throu h the same and projecting at each side tiereof, as shown in Fig. 9, so as to seat upon the base of said groove, the wldth of the groove being equal to, the diameter of the pin 33 so that the latter can have no radial movement in the web of the pulley.
It will be evident that the preparation of thejvarious members of my improved stop motion device can be effected with but little machine work and the assembling of the parts can be effected quickly and without the employment of skilled labor, hence the cost of the device is reduced to a minimum.
While I have shown and described in connection with the different pulleys locking devices movable in different angular planes, this is not essential to the broader embodiment of my invention.
In order to simplify the claims I have in a number of the same referred to the lever 22 and dog 27 as looking devices and to the stud 17 and ring 21 asactuators therefor, respectively.
