To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK DUTGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Versailles, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fiber- Case Railway-Torpedoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in fiber case railway torpedoes.
The object of my invention is to provide a torpedo of this character in which all metal for closing the tube and holding the strap is dispensed with so that there are no metal parts to fly to injure bystanders.
Another object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and eflective torpedo having certain details of structure and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective of my completed torpedo. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of a modified form of torpedo, taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the improved torpedo, showing the several parts in their separated relation. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a tablet containing case.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the case of my improved torpedo. This case is preferably made of a tube cut into the Y proper length and pressed down flat in the shape shown in Fig. 1, of the drawing. This has been found to be the cheapest and most effective way of making the case and has also been found to more readily tightly seal the end of the case when it is con-' structed in this manner;
The rail-attaching means consists of a strip of fiber 2, preferably of an elongated form and of a shape and size the same as that of the case 1. This strip is provided at a point midway its ends with the openings 3 and 4, through which is threaded the lead rail-attaching clip or strap 6, all of which is well understood and needs no further description. The explosive compound 7 is preferably in tablet form and is placed within the case intermediate its ends and the fiber and the folded ends 8 and 9 are closed and at the same time secured to the ends of the strap 2, by means oftwo rows of stitching 10 and 11, whereby the strip and the case are securely fastened together. This stitching is fully shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and the folded ends of the case 1 are-tightly sealed and secured to the strap 2. After the case is closed by these two rows of stitching 10 and 11, the ends are dipped into a sealing composition, as indicated at 12, whereby an absolutely water-tight case is formed.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 6, the explosive mixture 7 is inclo sed within the wrapper 13, having its ends sealed by a sealing composition 14 and is placed within the case 1 and is closed by the stitching 10 and 11, the same as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. It might be found necessary to dip the whole torpedo in a water-proof composition to more securely seal the case and absolutely prevent any moisture entering the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A fib'er case railway torpedo comprising a case having opposite open ends, an explosive tablet within the case, a clip carrying strip below the case, and a stitching closing the open ends of the case and secur ing the strip to the case.
2. A fiber case railway torpedo comprising an elongated case having opposite open ends, an explosive tablet within the center of the case, the ends of the case flattened beyond the explosive tablet, a clip carrying strip resting against the lower face of the case and a stitching passing through the case and the strip for closing the flattened ends of the case and securing the strip thereto.
3. A fiber case railway torpedo comprising an elongated case having opposite open ends, an explosive tablet within the center of the case, the ends of the case flattened beyond the explosive tablet, a clip carrying strip of a size corresponding to that of the case and resting against the lower face thereof, stitching securing the flattened ends of the case together and securing the strip thereto, and a water-proofing composition covering the flattened ends of the case.
4:. A fiber case railway torpedo comprising an elongated case, having opposite open ends, an explosive tablet within the center of the case, the ends of the case flattened beyond the explosive tablet, a strip having two openings,- a clip threaded through said openings and a stitching passing through the flattened ends of the case and through the strip for securing the flattened ends of the case together and securing the strip thereto.
5. A fiber case railway torpedo compris ing an elongated case having opposite open ends, an explosive tablet inclosed Within a water-proof casing within the center of the case, the ends of the case flattened beyond the explosive tablet, a strip resting against the lower face of the case, a rail attaching clip carried by the strip and stitching passing through the flattened ends of the case, and the strip for closing the ends of the case and. securing the strip thereto.
6. In a torpedo, an explosive containing case of a fibrous nature, a base member for the case, and a stitching cooperating to both close the flattened open ends of the case and to secure the base member thereto.
