T 0 all whom it may conccrn Be it known that I, J OHN CnssNA, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Locust Grove, in the county of Adams and State of Ohio, have i'nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchors for lVire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in anchoring device for fence stretchers and the like and the primary object of my invention is to provide an anchoring device capable of detachable association with a fence post or the like to serve as an anchor for one end of any conventional form of wire stretching device.
Another object of my invention is to provide an anchoring devce of the class described having improved bracing means associated therewith.
A further object of my invention is to provide an anchoring device of the class described having improved means for bracing the same against a felice post, the other bracing means hereinbefore mentioned serving to prevent lateral displacement of the anchoring device during a stretching operation.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved anchor for Wire stretchers will appear from the following detail description and the claim, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure l is a perspective view of an anchoring device embodying the improvements of my invention, the same being shown in operative position; Fig. 2 is a fragmental perspective view of one end of one of the bracing arms of the anchor and a connection associated therewth; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view of the anchoring device and connection of the same with the braces; Fig. 4 is a fragmental perspective view of one end of one of the post engaging elements; and Fg. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional view of the connecting means between the anchor and one of the post engaging arms.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates the main body portion of my improved anohoring device the lower free end thereof being adapted to engage the earth as best shown 'in Fig. 1.
The anchoring device 1 is maintained in vertical position by means of angularly extendng braces 2 having U-shaped looped members 3 carried on the free extremities thereof, said members 3 being engaged by staples 'c carried by the body 1, this structure being best shown in Fig. 3. It will be seen that the structure of the connecting means between the braces and the body 1 serves as a semi-universal connection permitting the braces 2 to engage the earth as best shown in Fig. 1 at the proper bracing angle. It is to be understood, of course, that the anchor and its braces do not penetrate the earth to any great extent but may rest merely upon the surface.
T have shown a fence post designated 5, said post being of the usual type, a wire fence structure being designated 6 and having the free end thereof engaged by clamping jaws 7 of a conventional form of wire stretcher, said jaws 7 being connected by a cable 8 with a wire stretcher 9 of the bar type, a second cable 10 connecting at ll with the anchor 1 afi'ording means against which the stretcher may operate.
I provide p ost engaging elements, one of the elements being adapted to positively engage a post the other element being adapted to impinge against the post. Said post engaging elements include arms 12 and 13 connected as at 14 with the body 1, a suitable connection, the preferred form of which is hereinafter described, being provided therefor.
The arm 12 is adapted to impinge upon the post 5, said arm having an arcuate end portion covered by a metal plate 15, through which projects a prong 16, said prong being located approximately centrally of the curved portion of said arm. The foregoing structure is best shown in Fig. 4.
The arm 13 is provided with means for bracing the fence post 5, said means including a U-shaped strap 17 having the arms 18 thereof provided with notches 19 in the upper marginal edges. The arms are adapted to project through loops 20 carried by opposite faces of the arms 13 and the notches 19 are adapted to engage pins 21 carried by said arm 13. This arrangement permits adjustment of the strap 17 into clamping engagement With the post as best shown in Fig. l. However, the structure per' se', as
i designated l-t in Fig. 1 is best shown' in detail in Fig. 5. Both of the connecting means mentioned are'identcal therefore a brief descrption of one will sufiice. Referring to Fig. 5 I provide a U-shaped member having a later-al portion 22 and parallel extending arms 23, the free ends of said arms being sharpened and bentinwardly to engage the arm, in the present instance the arm 12 as indicated at 2%; Staples 25 engage the arms 23 and prevent dislodgmen't of the' same from the post engaging member. r
The arm 12 is provided with a recess 26 approximately centrally of'the end face of the arm and adapted to receive a U-shaped staple or the, like27 carred by the' anchor portion 1. The anchor portion 1 is provided with a similar recess 28 adapted to receive a lateral portion 22 'of the eonnecting member carried bythe post engaging arm 12.
In use it will be seen that the body portion of the anchor is placed upon the earth in alinement with the fence line and the arms 12 and 13 are engaged as 'shown in Fig. 1 with the post. ;the braces 2 are now placed at the proper angle and engage the earth, it being shown that the lower ends of said arms are beveled. 'By attaching the wire stretcher as shown the fence structure 6 may be drawn to the position desired. Of course,
it will be understood that while I have shown my invention appled as an anchor for wire stretchers it is not desired that I be limited to this application of my invention.
