More specifically the invention relates to -means for guiding a card, storage mechanism for the body portion of the tab, cans for holding the binder in place, mean for supplying solution to the body portion of the tab and to a portion of the card, means for folding and guiding the binder over the body portion of the tab and over a portion of the card, and means for pressing and holding these parts together during the amalgamating operation.
, The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims. v
Referring tothe drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the center of the device; Fig. 2 is a top plan view with parts broken away; Fig. 3 is a front elevation with some of the parts in the rear removed;.Fig. its a somewhat diagrammatic view showing the parts larger and in their arrangement prior to the feeding of the card through; Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the parts in the position which they assume as the card and body portion of the tab are being fed into the amalgamating portion of the apparatus; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a portion of one of the electrical heating units.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and construction of parts may be employed but I have shown one arrangement which is effective, and in such embodiment 1 represents a suitable base provided with-an arm 2 which, together with the base, supports the various parts. Secured near the outer edge of the base is a bed plate standard 3 having secured to the upper end thereof a bed plate or table 4 extending under a suitable magazine 5 secured in the outer end of the arm 2 and adapted to hold end of the magazine is spaced from the table 4 a distance slightly greater thanthe thickness of one of the body portions 6 so that a card may be passed under the lower end of the magazine and between it and the table. The lowerend of the magazine is provided with a guiding plate 7 rolled up at its front edge to facilitate the entry and passage of the card. In order to locate the body portion of the tab along the edge of the card a suitable gage 8, preferably of angle iron in cross section, is mounted upon a rod 9 supported ina suitable socket 10 carried by the standard 3. A thumb screw 11 serves to hold this rod in any adjusted position and hence holds the guide in any adjusted position. The arrangement of these parts is such that as the car is fed under the guide plate 7 the lowermost tab 6 is carried from under the chute by the edge of the card and carried forward therewith to other mechanism, now to be described, where it is assembled with a binder to build up or form the complete tab and secure or unite the same to the card or sheet.
It is necessary to supply a solution to both sides of the body portion of the tab and to pad 17. The bottom of this member below the rectangular opening is provided with perforations 18 which communicate wlth a solution chamber 19 in communication with.
a solution pipe 20. This solution pipe 20 is connected at one end by hose 21 to an upper solution pipe 22 leading to any suitable solution supply 23. The opposite end of the pipe 20 is connected by a tube 2l'with a riser tube/25 which extends up above the solution receptacle so that the solution level in the receptacle is established in the tube 25. Secured to the underside of the arm 2 and just back of the magazine 5 is a bracket 26 provided with a pair of bearing studs 27,
similar in all respects to the bearing studs 12, and these studs recei e rods 28 mounted in the upper pad holder 29 which is of a corresponding structure to the lower one, and hence needs no further detail description except that its solution pipe 30 is connected by tubing 31 to the right, as shown in Fig. 3, with an upper solution pipe 32 leading to the supply 23 and the opposite end of the pipe is connected by a tubing 33 to a riser 34, similar to the riser 25 and for the same purpose. From this structure it will be seen that there will be a supply of amalgamating solution to each of the solution chambers 19 and the pads carried by these holders will be kept moist with solution and they are so located that they will receive the. tab body 6 and the adjacent portion of the card and will "soak these parts with amalgamating solution. 7
The two pad holders are movable toward and from each other and the lower one is provided with a pair of downwardly extending ears 35 pivotally connected to a link 36 in turn connected between two toggle links 37 pivoted to an ear 38 secured to the bed. In a similar manner the upper pad holder member is provided with an upwardly extending ear 39 carrying a pin 40 pivoted in a pair of links 41 in turn pivoted upon .a pin 42 receiving a toggle link 43 pivoted u on a pin 44 mounted in ears 45 extending ownward from the bracket 26'. Outside of the links 41 and on the pin 42 are pperating links 46 connected to other operatingparts which will be described. The pivot pins of the links 36 and 37 are likewise connected to operating links 47 which are connected in a manner for operation, as will be disclosed.
Secured to the bed andto the rear of the solution applying mechanisms is the binder applying device and the pressure and heat applying devices, and this mechanism will now be described. Secured to the bed is a pair of upright guide brackets 48 one arranged on each side of the longitudinal center of the machine and each having a guide: way 49 therein, and these guideways receive a downwardly extending guiding portion 50 of alower amalgamating member 51. Each of the guides 50 is provided with a vertically disposed flange 52 on the outside of the brackets 48 for holding the guides 50 in the guideway 49. This member is provided with an upper fiat amalgamating surface 53 and suitable openings 54 for heating elements of any preferred type, preferably of the electrical type, such as shown in Fig. 6. Extending downward between the guides 50 and this lower amalgamating member 51 is a pair of ears 55 carrying a pin 56 connected to, a toggle link 57 in turn pivoted upon a pin 58 receiving a pair of links 59 pivoted in an ear 60 in the base and valso receiving the operating links 47 for the lower solution .pad holder. The link 57 is preferably made in the form of a bell crank lever with an arm 61 extending out to the rear of the machine,
and this arm has bifurcated end portions receiving a pin 62 arranged in an operating rod 63. The upper amalgamating member 64 is identical in structure and is connected to the arm tube by suitable toggle mechanism comprising links 65 and 66. The pivot pin 67 of the toggle is connected to the links 46 operating the upper solution pad holder. \The link 66 is also provided with a bell crank arm 68 provided with a bifurcated end 69 receiving a pin 70 also mounted in the rod 63.
Cooperating with the upper and lower amalgamating members 64 and 51 is a pair of amalgamating plates 71 and 72, which are mounted between suitable brackets 73 at the arm 2 and extend between the amalgamating members and out at the front ends where they are turned up at 74 to facilitate the entry of the binderas will later appear.
The mechanism for feeding the binder is made ofparts arranged in pairs, one part secured to the guide brackets 48 of the lower amalgamating member, and one part secured to the upper brackets, and the upper part comprises a pair of arms 75 one secured to each of the upper brackets and supporting a transverse rail 76 having secured to it a holder plate 77 provided with an inwardly bent loweredge 78. This bent edge 78 is adapted to direct the binder strip into the bent edges 74 of the amalgamating strips 71 and 72. Spaced from this holder plate and forming a part of the rail 76 is a preliminaryheating member 79 having an opening 80 therein for receiving the heating element and having a straight back face cooperating with the holder late to form "a space for receiving the bin er plate or strip of celluloid between the two. This preliminary heater member is also provided with a flat face beveled upward at the front edge adjacent the solution applying device so as to facilitate the entry of the tab body portion and the card. In like manner, a lower holder plate 81 is applied to the lower guide brackets and a heating member 82 is arranged in conjunction with it, the opening ,or space for the binder strip or plate being closed so as to hold it in proper position with respect to the space between the preliminary heatermembers. In order to limit the inward thrust of the card and the tab formed thereon with respect to the amalgamating members, suitable stop .pins 83 are arranged in one of the members and these pins pass through suitable openings in the amalgamating plates 71 and 72 and into openings in the other amalgamating member.
In use, assuming that solution is supplied to the solution member 23, and that it is under the magazine between the solution pads 17. The operator then causes an upward movement of the bar 63 with the result that the two solution pads are forced together upon the tab body and against both sides of the adjacent card. After suflicient time has elapsed to thoroughly saturate the card and both sides of the tab body portion,
the operator releases the pressure on the bar 63 and moves the card and the body between the preliminary heater members and against the center of the binder strip 84, causing it to be folded at the center over the tab body and over the adjacent po ions of the card and to be pushed through in this folded condition between the lips 78 and between the amalgamating plates'71 until the folded edge of the binder engages the pinv 83. The reverse movement of the bar, or the downward movement of the bar 63 then causes the amalgamating members 51 and 64 to be brought down against the amalgamating plates which in turn are brought down against the binder strip causing heat and pressure to be applied to the'parts and bringing about an amalgamation therebetween and the formation of tab stock at this point which may be trimmed or otherwise treated for producing a tab on the card.
Any suitable heating element may be utilized in connection with the amalgamating members but I have shown in Fig. 6 a section of one whichmay be connected to any suitable source of current supply. This member comprises an outer protecting casing 85 preferably of brass having a head 86 therein and supporting an insulator 87 through which a suitable contact and binding screw-88 may pass. Against the inner wall of-the casing 85 is a lining 89 of ashestos or similar material, and within this casing is the coil 90 of resistance wire forming the heater, and within this coil of wire is a suitable core of asbestos 91 or any "other suitable material. p
- Having described my invention, I cla1m:-- 1. In apparatus for making tab sheets,
1 means for receiving and guiding a-sheet,
and means for forming a designating three ply t'ab structure and securing the same to the sheet.
' 2. In apparatus for -making tab sheets,
means for receiving and guiding a sheet,
and means for forming and securing a celluloid designating tab thereto, said tab comprising a main body portion and a binder, the binder being secured to the sides of the main body portion and to the sheet.
3. In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for feeding and guiding a tab body with its, edge in juxtaposition to the edge of said sheet, and means for binding and securing said tab body to the sheet.
4. In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding a sheet, and means for forming a plural ply designating tab structure and securing the same to both faces of the tab edge of the sheet.
5. In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for feeding and guiding a tab body with its edge in juxtaposition to the edge of said sheet, and means for guiding a binder strip and applying the same to the body portion and adjacent portion of the sheet.
6. In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for'feeding and guiding a tab body with its edge in juxtaposition to the edge, of the sheet, and means for folding a binder strip over the edge of the sheet and securing the same thereto.
7. In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding the sheet, means for feeding and guiding a tab body with its edge in juxtaposition to theedge of the sheet, and means for applying binder strip portions to both sides of the tab and .the adjacent portions of the sheet.
8. In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for feeding and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, means for applying side plate binder portions, one upon each side of the body portion and the adjacent sheet, and means for supplying an adhering solution to the meeting surfaces of the binder portions and the body portion and adjacent portions of the sheet.
9. In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding the sheet, means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, means for applying an adhering solution to both faces of the tab body and the faces of means'for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet,
means for applying an adhering solution to both faces of the tab body and the faces of the adjacent portion of the sheet, said means comprising a pair of solution dBVICBSjIClflPtbinder portions to the sides of the toward and from each other,
ed to engage the tab body and the sheet, means for applying side blnder portions to thesides of the body and adjacent portions of the sheet, and means for amalgamating the several parts to form a tab sheet.

In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding the sheet, means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, means for applying an adhering solution to both faces of the tab body and the faces of the adjacent portion of the sheet, said means comprising a pair of pads, means for mov ing said pads toward and from the sheet, and means for supplying solution to the pads, means for applying side binder portions to the sides-of the body and adjacent portions of the sheet, and means for amalgamating the several parts to form a tab sheet.

In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding the'sheet, means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition'to the edge of the sheet, means for applying an adhering solution to both faces of the tab body and the faces of the adjacent portion of the sheet, said means comprisinga pair of pad holders slidably mounted and movable toward and from each other, means for moving said pad holders a pad mounted in each pad holder, and means for supplying solution thereto, means for applying side body and adjacent portions of the sheet, and means for amalgamating the several parts to form a tab sheet.

In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding the sheet, means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, means for folding a binder strip over the edge of the tab body and onto the side faces thereof and the side faces of the adjacent portion of the sheet, means for applying an amalgamating solution between the binder strip and the faces of the tab body and sheet, and means for amalgamating the parts to form a tab sheet.

In apparatus for making tab sheets, means means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, means for folding a binder strip over the edge of the tab body and onto the side faces thereof and the side faces of the adjacent portion of the sheet, said means comprising a binder strip holder and folding means, means for applying an amalgamating solution between the binder strip and the faces of the tab body and sheet, and means for amalgamating the parts to form a tab sheet,
15. In apparatus for making tab sheets, means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition tothe edge of the sheet,
for receiving and guiding a sheet,
means for folding a binder strip over the edge of the tab body and onto the .side faces thereof and the side faces of the adjacent portion of the sheet, said means comprising a binder strip holder, and a preliminary heater for heating the binder strip, means for applying an amalgamating solution between the binder strip and the-faces of the tab body and'sheet, and means for amalgamating the parts to form a tab sheet.
16. Apparatus for making tab sheets comprising means for receiving and guiding a sheet,means forreceiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, means for applying side binder portions to the faces of the tab body and to adjacent portions of the sheet, means for applying a solution therebetween, and an amalgamating device consisting of a pair of presser members, means for clamping said members against the sheet, and means for operating said members.

Apparatus for making tab sheets comprising means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, means for applying side binder portions to the faces of the tab body and to adjacent portions of the sheet, means for applying a solution therebetween, and an amalgamating device consisting of a pair of presser members slidably mounted and mov. able toward and from each other, means for moving said members, and means for applying heat thereto.

Apparatus for making tab sheets comprising means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition tothe edge of the sheet, means for applying side binder portions to the faces of the tab body and to adjacent portions of the sheet, means for applying a solution therebetween, and an amalgamating device consisting of a pair of presser members, means for moving said members, and amalgamating plates extend-- ing between said members and adapted to receive the tab structure and adjacent por-' tion of the sheet.

Apparatus for making tab sheets comprising means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, means 'for applying side binder portions to the faces of the tab body and to adjacent portions of the sheet, means for applying a solution therebetween, and an amalgamating device consisting of a pair of presser members, means for moving said members, amalgamating plates extending between said members and adapted to receive the tab structure and adjacent portion of the sheet, and a suitable stop for limiting the movement of the tab and sheet .between the amalgamating plates.

Apparatus for making tabsheets comprising means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for. receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, means for applying side binder portions to the faces of the tab body and to adjacent portions of the sheet, means for applying a solution therebetween, and an amalgamating device consisting of a pair of presser members, means for moving said members, ama-lgamating plates extending between said members and adapted to receive the tab structure and adjacent portion of the sheet, and suitable stop pins carried by one of said members extending through the amalgamating plates and into the other member for limiting the movement of the tab and sheet between the amalgamating members.

I Apparatus for making tab sheets comprising means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, a solution applying device comprising a pair of members'movable into-and out of engagement with the sides of the tab body and the adjacent portions of the sheet, means for applying binder strip portions to the sides of the tab body and the adjacent portions of the sheet, and amalgamating means consisting of a pair' of amalgamating members movable toward and from each other, and suitable operating mechanism including instrumentalities for moving the solution devices into engagement with the tab body and the sheet, and moving the amalgamating members into operative position with respect to the tab structure. Apparatus for making tab sheets comprising a frame, means for receiving and guiding a sheet, means for receiving and guiding a tab body in juxtaposition to the edge of the sheet, a device for applying solution to both sides of the tab body and the adjacent portion of the sheet, said means consisting of a pair of members movable toward and from each other, suitable toggle links connecting each solution device with the frame, means for applying binder portions to each side of the tab bady and adjacent portion of the sheet, and amalgamating means comprising a pair of movable members, toggle links connecting each movable member with the frame, operating means connected with each set of toggles of the amalgamating devices for operating the same, and connections between the operating means of these toggles and the toggles of the solution devices.
