To all 'whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, MARTIN HILeERs, citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Respirating Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a respirating device used while massaging the face or treating the eyes, being adapted to permit the user to breath while the face is submerged or while being treated with vapors.

The invention relates more particularly to a respirating device of peculiar construction that can be constructed at a low cost, and any one of whose parts when broken or damaged can be replaced at little expense and without requiring the purchase of an entirely new one.

One of the objects of the invention is to Vprovide a mouth piece of peculiar form around which the lips of the wearer can be tightly closed so as to prevent entrance of the fluid or vapors in the mouth.

Another object is to provide a structure includinga mouth piece and integral means for closing the nostrils for preventing the passage of fluid into the nose.

. In the accompanying drawing `forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same showing its adjustment when in use.

A indicates a hollow body preferably of hard rubber including two opposite extensions or horns B provided with end aperwhich is shown, and an open mouth piece D flared at its outer free end so that its said mouth will be of a greater diameter than the main portion or neck of the device. The extensions or enlarged at E lso that they will receive and retain a flexible tube F. Each of the latter has secured in any suitable manner at its outer end a bow Gr adapted to be placed over and held upon the ears of the patient.

Secured to or formed integral with the body A is an extension II, Fig. 2, which spaced extensions J, Fig. 1, so disposed with reference to the mouth piece as to receive the nose of the patient between them so as to close the nostrils, the

mouth piece being held in the mouth with the lips tightly closed around the said neck thereof. /f

My device differs from oth's, of which I am aware in that the flaring mouth -piece 1s provided over which the teeth and lips can be placed, the lips being firmly held around the neck of the mouth-piece, guarding against leakage of the fluid or vapors into the mouth.

Devices of which I am aware do not include as an integral part of the structure means for closing the nostrils and to this feature I attach importance together with the flaring mouth piece, and the construction of a device of separable parts any one of which may be replaced. 1

It 1s necessary at times to keep the face submerged at long intervals as in the treatment of the eyes, for example, and a device of this nature is necessary and it includes all of the advantages named in a single or one piece article.

I may not employ the tubes F or the portion G but may Aextend the parts B so as to be substantially vof the length of the-said parts F. The patient in this case can hold the device in position by means of the teeth and lips so that the ends of B will be above the surface of the fluid.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a respirating device ing affections of the eye,

for'use in treatthe combination yeo and extending away from itr at an angle to the axis of its bore, means attached to the said extension adapted to be engaged or hooked over the ear of the patient, and a pair of members extending fromithe said mouth-piece to engage over the nose of the patient and adapted by their form, in conjunction, to close the nostrils.

2. In a respirating device for use in treating affections of the eye, the combination of a tubular mouth-piece open at one end, a tubular member with which it communicates at its other end, said tubular member extending at each side of the said mouth-piece, the resulting extensions lying in a plane disposed at an angle to the axis of the mouth-piece, the axis of the bore of the latter piercing saitfplane, means extending from the said extensions to suspend them from the ears of thepatient, and a pair of extensions carried by the mouth-piece to engage each side of the nose of the patient and adapted by their form, in conjunction, 'to hold the nostrils closed.

3.
