pplication'led March 15, 1915. Serial No. 14,459
To all whom imag concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BREN'roN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waukegan, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Quick-Opening Faucets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. y v
The invention relates to faucets or cocks of the quick opening type and which are usually providedy with multiple screw threads of sharp pitch so that thevvalve can be opened and closed by turning the valve operating stem through a partial rotation.
5 The valve of such a quick opening faucet or cock is arranged on the discharge side of the valve seat and is apt te be opened accidentally by the pressure of the water supply and particularly after the operating parts become loosened or worn.
The present invention seeks to provide improved means for frictionally holding the valve against accidental opening and consists in the-features of improvements hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the preferred tially in vertical section, of the improved faucet or cock. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The faucet or cock comprises a suitable casing 1 having a partition 2 provided with The partition is provided on its upper or discharge side with a raised valve seat 4 about the port 3. Preferably also, an annular recess 5 is provided in the upper face of the partition extending about the valve seat. Above and in line with the port, f
the casing is provided with an upwardly extending cylindrical portion 6.
A valve 7 is arranged on the discharge side of the valve seat and its lower end is arranged to extend within the recess 5 of the partition 2. Preferably, as shown, the lower end of the valve is provided with a washer 8 which is held in place by a screw 9 and which is arranged to engage the valve seat 1.
In the preferred form shown, the enlarged upper end of the valve is provided with external screw threads 10 which cooperate with internal threads 11 formed upon the upwardly extending portion 6 of the casing.
These threads are multiple (quadruple in the form shownland are of sharp pitch so that'the valve can be opened and closed by turning it through a partial rotation.
In the preferred construction set forth the valve stem 12 is separa-ted from the valve and is provided with a square lower end portion 13 which. fits within the correspondingly shaped socket or bore 14 in the upper enlargedv portion of the valve. Preferably also, the valve stem is held against vertical movement and for this purpose is provided with an integral collar 15 and a cap-nut 16 cooperates with the collar to prevent the ver- Ytical movement of the valve stem. As shown,
the cap-nut 16 is threaded upon the upper end of the extension 6 and a body of packing material 17 within the cap-nut extends overthe upper edge of the extension 6 and against the valve stem to form tight joints therewith. The collar and the upper portion of the cap-nut are preferably conical in form as shown.
Means are provided for fri'ctionally holding the valve stem in any. set position to thereby prevent any accidental movement or opening of the valve. For this purpose a series of washers are mounted upon the valve stem, one of the washers being connected to rotate with the stem, and the other washer or washers being heldin iixed position and in frictional Contact with'the rotatable washer. Preferably, as shown, three fiat metal washers 18, 19 and 20 are mounted upon the squared portion of the valve stem immediately below the collar 15 and these washers are arranged within an internal recess or seat in the upper end of the cylinder extension G. The intermediate washer 19 is provided with a square opening which loosely lits the squared portionof the valve stem so that this washer rotates with the stem. The other washers 1S and 20 are provided with round central openings and are clamped in fixed position between the packing 17 in the cap-nut 16 and the upper end of the extension 6. In this way the fixed washers 18 and 20 bear with sufficient friction upon the washer' 19 to prevent the accidental rotation of the valve stem 18 and the accidental movement of the' valve.
The collar 15 of the valve operating stem is clamped between the upper washer and the packing 17 within the cap-nut 16 so that the valve stem is held against vertical movement, but the rotation of the valve stem, of
ChA
"withthe shoulder at the upper end ofthe screw thread in the extension will holdjit 19 which rotatesV with the valve stem fits the Vsame'somewhat loosely so that it can be gripped with considerable friction between the fixed washers 18 and Q0 without causing v undue binding between the rotatable valve Y stemand the fixed parts of the faucet. The
arrangement prevents undue wear between Y the movable and fixed parts. i The lower end of the valve steam also fits rather loosely within the bore of the valve so that the latter is self-'adjusting upon its seat andV so that there will be no undue binding'l between the screw threads of thevalve and of the casing'. The valve stem is provided at its upper end with a suitable handle 21 heldin place by a screw 22.
It is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the detailsof structure without departure fromthe essentials of the invention as defined in the claims. I claim as my invention 1; `AV faucet of the quick opening type hav- Y ing a rotatable valve-operating stem. a washer loosely mounted on saidrstem but connected to rotate therewith, and means held against rotation on saidfaucet for frictionally engaging saidvwasher.
2. A faucet comprising a casing having a valve seat,a valve on the discharge side of said seat having quick acting threads, a rotatablek stem for operating saidl valve, a washer Vloosely mounted on said stem but connected to rotate therewith, a cap-nut for said casing, and meansheld against rotation between said cap-nut and casing for frictionally engaging said washer.
3. A faucet comprising a casing having a valve seat, a valve on the discharge side of said seat having quick acting threads, a rotatable stem for operating said valve having a collar thereon, and a washer loosely mounted on said stem but connected to rotate there-` with, said casing having mea-ns cooperating with said collar to hold said stem against vertical movement and for frictionally en-V gaging said washer.
4. A faucet of the quick opening type having ka rotatable valve-operating stem, a plurality of metal washers separate from said Copies of this patent may be obtained for stem but mounted thereon, ronelof `'which isY connected to rotate .with said stem, and
means ori-said faucet fforfclamping the other washer orwashersa'gainst'rotationiand in Y Vi metal washers mounted` on said stem", the `inin fixed position. v The intermediatewasherY n,
clamping the other washers against rotation and ,in frictional vcontact with said intermediate washer.
6. A faucet comprising a casing having va y valve seat, a valve onthe discharge side'of Y said seat, a rotatable sternv for operatingsaidv valve, a plurality of-washers loosely mounted on said stein, one of .which isfconnected to said stem to rotate therewith7 anda cap-nut on said casing arrangedto clamp the other washer Yor washers against rotation, and in frictional contact with said rotatablewasher.
7. A faucet comprisingV a casingV having a valve seat,'a valve onthe discharge side of 1 Y said seat, ya rotatablerstem for operating said valve having a collar thereon, a plurality of metal washers loosely lmounted on said stem beneath said collar, oneof whichpgis connect-A ed to said stem to rotate therewith, anda cap-nut on vsaidcasing cooperating with said i collarv to hold.` said stem against vertical movement and Y for clamping the 'other washer or washers against rotation'and in frictional contact with'said rotatablefwasher.
8. Afaucet comprising a casing having a valve seat, a valveonthe discharge side of'v said seat, a rotatable stem for operating said valve having a collar thereon, a series of three metalwashers loosely moiuited on said stem belowV said collar, the intermediate washer being connected to said stem torotate therewith, and a cap-nut onfsaid casing coperatingwith said collar to'hold said stem against vertical movement and clamping the other washers against rotation and in frictional contact with said rotatable lwasher.
9. Arfaucet of the quick opening type hav-V ing a rotatable valve-operating stem, a friction washer loosely mounted on said stein but connected to rotate'therewith, and cooperating friction members held against rotation on said faucet for frictionally grippingsaid washer between them.
