To all whom t may concern l Be it known that I, CLIFFORD H. RAMSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing "at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hydro-Extractors, of which the following isa specifica` tion of such bearings is effected in a way cal-l culated to keep exposed surfaces of the machine free of lubricant andto confine the lubricant against being thrown off by the rotating element onto the contents of lthe basket or receiver part of the latter.
In the accompanying drawings, in which i the invention -is fully illustrated, Figure-l is a vertical sectional view of a hydro-extractor containing my improvements; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, on a larger scale, of parts including immediately the upper bearing; Figs. 3 and 4 are horizontal sectional views on the lines :z2-a' and 3/-1/ of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the rotating bearing part or bushing.

The upper bearing for shaft e, vertlcally above the step bearing, is arranged in the arch d of frame Z and is constructed as follows: A sleeve Z having a reduced lower end m is secured by screws n penetrating a lia-nge 0 at its upper end in a vert-ical holeformed in the arch d of the frame.' Into thls sleeve, which has threading on the inside at its upper end, is screwed a bushing or bear mg part Q, which on the inside is conical, the taper belng in the upward direction; at its upper end. it has a flange provided with spanner holes r. Whenthe bushing g has been adjusted up or down, it may be held agalnst turning by a lock nuts having spanner holes t.'
Screwed into the lower reduced end of the sleeve Z and standing upright therein is a .thimble u, which forms with the sleeve, an
annular lubricant well, the top ofthe thimble belng appreciably below that of the sleeve. v
The shaft e has secured thereon, as by the key t', an exteriorly conical bushing or bearing part fw, the taper of which is upward. As shown, said bushing is secured at its upper portion to the shaft, and its lower portion depends into the well formed' by conical surfaces of the bushings g and fw, as shown in the drawings the bushing w, has formed in its conical surface reverse spiral `grooves a'. Once the shaft has been stepped in the step bearing with its bushing fw contained in sleeve Z so that its lower portion depends into the well formed by said sleeve and thimble, bushing g is introduced and screwed down until it isin ceperating relation, to form a journal, with bushing w, whereupon the lock nut s is set.
' The shaft has an axial lubricant passage y extending therethrough from end to end. In this passage is 'a constant level lubricant retarder consisting in the present case of a plug .e fixed in the passage and having its upper end reduced and a vertical bore 2 eX- i tending upwardly from its lower end into its upper reduced end and further having lateral openings 3 leading from said bore to the exterior of its reduced end. From a point below the level of the openings 3 but opposite the reduced portion of the plug a an inclined port 4 extends from passage y through the shaft and bushing fw to the eX- terior ofthe latter, the outer end of said port being slightly above the lubricant level of the retarder indicated in Fig. 2 at 5.

But during rotation, centrifugal force' impels oil checked by the retarder a to flow up the inclined port 4, so. that it comes 'between the Y `the constant level retarder s which keeps a certain quantity of oil in reserve ready to be delivered to the upper fbearing upon the machine being started and at the same time allows any surplus due t0 the oil being' left to drip from the oil cup While the machine is stopped for short period to overflow and vescape to the lower bearing; flooding of the upper bearing with oil is a serious objection in machines vof this character, because when there is a superiluity of oil it is likely t0 Work out of any means for confining it onto other parts of the machine to ultimately fall -on the contents of the basket orbe thrown by centrifugal action directly upon them. In the present construction the oil, as will be obvious, is delivered to the upper, bearing only when it is required.
Oil admittedto the lower bearing enters at the bottom and is discharged at the top, above the level of the water .draining olf through the outlet b, whereby the water isv notonly kept from the rotating-.shaft but from the lowerbearing, and said-bearing always has the benefit of only oil circulating through it.
The overflow from well L-u falling into catch-well 6 is drained from the latter by l level lu spout 9 when the machine is stopped, the i oil in the catch-well never accumulating to such an extent during a running period as to be thrown out past flange 7 by centrifugal force. -'1 `o prevent the more or less copious flow of oil down passage y from being driven by centrifugal force up the drain outlet from. the 'catch well into the vlatter I have provlded the spout 9; so long as this spout projects beyond the surface of the passage mto the same it accomplishes the purpose, but 1t is 'best to have it project so far that .its end will be at the point where the centrifugal force is. m'Z-to the axis lof the pas- Sa. x v o -aving thus fully "described myA invenl tion, rwhat Iclaim .as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent is v 1. In combination, a support and an upright rotary member having a bearing in thel support and a lubricant p'aa'ge extending through the bearing portion of said member 'said member having a constantlevel lub a lubricant port leading laterally ffrom the retarder to the bearing and delivering to the ricant retarder in the passage and from the retarder to t e bearing and delivering to the latter at a' point above the constant level of the retarder.
3. In combination, asu'pport annular lubricantw'ell including interiorly thereof a bearingpart, and an upright rotary member penetrating said well and having a bearing part depending into the well and operatively engaging the bearing'` part thereof, said member having means to feed a. lubricant substantially axially through the same and then into the well.
4. In combination, a support having an annular lubricant wellincluding a Abearing part, and an upright rotary member penetrating said well and having a bearing part depending intothe well and operativelyA engaging the first-named bearing part, one of said bearing parts having its bearing surface tapered, and one of said bearing parts vbeing vertically adjustable relatively to the other.

In combination, a support having upper and lower bearings, and an upright rotary member journaled in said bearings and having an`r having a lubricant passage extending therethrough, uninterrupted rom'above the upper bearing to and delivering into the lower bearing said member 'having a constantbricant retarder in said passage and a lubricant port leading laterally from the retarder to the upper bearing.
6. In combination, a support having upper and lower bearings, and an upright rotary member journaled in said 'bearings and having a lubricant passage extending from above the upper bearing to and delivering into the lower bearing, said member having a constant-level lubricant retarder' in said passage and a lubricant port leading from the retarder to the upper bearing and delivering to the latter at a point above the constant .level of the retarder.
7. In combination, a support having a bearing, and an upright rotary member journaled in the bearing, said support and member havingl means to lubricate the bearing and a lubricant catch well arranged below the bearing, said means including a lubricant passage extending axially through said member from a point relatively above to a point below the catch Well and said catch well having a delivery spout projecting into said passage.
8. -In combination, a liquid receptacle having a drain outlet in its bottom portion and a part of its bottom elevated relatively to the drain Outlet, a step-bearing in the elevated part of the bottom of said receptacle, a basket-carrying rotary shaft journaled in said step-bearing and having a lubricant passage leading therethrough from above the stepbearing and delivering thereto at a low point therein, the bearing having means to deliver the used lubricant into said receptacle onto the elevated part of said bottom, and means to rotate said shaft.
