To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Olmsted and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Operating Devices, of which the following is aspeciication.
The. present invention relates to door operating devices and more particularly to automatic vehicle-operated means for controlling doors to buildings,y gateways, and the like, and the primary object of my invention is to provide in a door operating mechanism of this character a simple, durable and eii'ective structure for opening and closing the doors of a garage or the like. by

Another object of my invention is to provide means for locking the doors or gates open or closed as the case may be.
A further object of my invention is to provide a door operating mechanism of the class described which may be applied to doors now in common use without the necessity of reconstructing the doo] or the building to which the device may be applied.

In.l operation, the doors are normally in `closed position as shown in the drawings, andas avehicle, 1n the present 'instance assuming it to be an automobile, approachesl `the door, `one of the forward wheels thereof depresses the roadway tappet in a direction toward thedoors. This swings the lever 30 and directs-a pull on thecable l6. The sudden shock ofthe vehicle wheel striking the roadway tappet is absorbed by the spring carried in the yieldable power transmitting device 8. Upon the initial movement of the 60 roadway tappet the disk 43 of the power transmitting device 8 is moved downwardly until lthe peripheral edge thereof engages- 'under the bottom marginal edge of the block 42. Thisy retains the diskl in the position shown and the strength of the spring carried by the member 8 exerts a: pull on the cable l0, this pull being transmitted through the sections 16 and 17 to the arms 2O and 21 swinging the doors to open position. However, previous to this upon the initial movement of the roadway tappet the cable 58 has been moved, this movement raising the locking member 54 and permitting the vdoors to belopened in the manner set forth. lNhen the doors have opened fully the pawls 46 engage the arms 20 and 21 retaining the doors in said position against the action of the coil springs 34 and 35. When the'tubular sections of the powertransmitting members 8 and 9 are drawn downwardly directing an Operation to their lowermost positions their vperipheral surfaces engage the block 42 disconnecting the disks .from said block to permit return of the cables to normal position. When closing the doors the roadway tappet is depressed in the Adirection opposite to the original movement thereof whereupon the'cable 7 will-bel actuated and an operation identical with tp foregoingl will ensue. This operationiis preceded by the unlocking of the doors, thatl is, the pawls l46 are disengaged from the arms 20 and 21 l permitting the doors to be imoved to closed position. From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding ofthe construction, opera- 10e tion and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and.- described my invention as embodying a specific structure, l desire that it be understoodfthat may make such changes on said structureas do 'not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention v as claimed.

In a device of the class described, a 11@ pair of doors, arms carried thereby, an operating lever, a pair of cables connected therewith, said cables having their free ends connected with said arms, yieldable powertransmitting means in said cables, means for engagementwith said arms to lock the doors in open position, and means engageable with the doors for locking the same in closed position,` both of said, locking means being operatively engaged with said cables to render` said locking means at times inoperative.

In a deviceof the classv described, power-transmitting means comprising acylinder, said cylinder being connected to` an object to be moved, a, disk associated withr said tubular member and a spring for connecting the same thereto, said disk being connected with a source of power, and -a `block for engagement with said disk when said disk is distended under action.
