UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. HEVERLING, O F GREENVILLE, OHIO.
IM PROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,051, dated November 21,1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN B. HEVERLING, of Greenville, Darke county, Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in the Method of Coupling Railroad Cars, of Which the following is a specification:
My invention, being self-acting, is designed to avoid the necessity of entering between the cars toV couple them, as is now done to the great danger of life and limb. Its operation is as follows, the several parts being set forth in the accompanying drawing, Viz.:
Figure l is a vertical section, showing A, the hook, with its points D and B and elongated slot d, through which a pin passes; D, point which forces out the slide O. C is a horizontal slide, of iron or wood, which is forced out on raising the hook, which it supports until struck by the link attached to the opposite car. Fig. 2 represents the position after the cars are coupled.
The hook B being raised and resting on the sliding bar C, the cars are coupledby gently moving them together; the coupling-link attached to one car enters the mouth of the opposite coupler, which is made large and fianging for this purpose, and, striking the slide O, throws it back, the hook B falling into its place, completing the operation.
The cars are uncoupled by lifting the hook B, which may be done from the top of the car by a vsmall chain or rope fastened to a small ring in above described.
JOHN B. HEV'ERLING.
