Be it known that I MAURICE J. BEGNEAUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the parish of Lafayette and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in l/Vire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates theprofision of a wire stretching device, which is very efiicient in its purpose, and capable of being quickly and conveniently handled, the invention residing in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter claimed. i The nature and advantages of the invention will be more thoroughly understood when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals of reference indicate similar parts inthe several views and in which Figure 1 is showing the manner of associating the same with a post or stationary member. Fig. 2is a view looking at the opposite side of the device. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation. 'Fig. 4 is a sectional View through the device taken on line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the controlling means for the wire gripping members. Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the grippingmembers. Fig. 7 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail edge elevation. Fig. 9 is an enlarged horizontal detail sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings A indicates generally a frame which may be of ably of A-shaped formation, the limbs 5 being rigidly connected together at and terminating at their opposite ends to provide points 6, the limbs being further braced by means of the cross piece 7. Projecting from one end of the frame is a handle 8 preferably provided with a reduced exteriorly screw threaded end portion 9 for threaded engagement within a socket in one end of the frame and by means ofwhich the handle is detachably associated therewith. Projecting from the frame adjacent the end with which the handle is connected, is a pair of spaced parallel lugs 10 between which one end of a relatively movable limb is pivotally connected in any suitable manner, this limb including two sections 11 and '12 respectively, the latter being slidably adjustable upon the former and provided with an open- Specification of letters Patent.

upon the shaft and arranged at one side of the frame is a ratchet'wheel 17, the teeth of which are adapted-to be engaged by means of a pawl 18 pivotally associated with the handleltl, thelatter being loosely mounted ciated therewith by means of a'nut 20. The handle is. mounted for oscillatory movement, and when moved in one direction the pawl 18 imparts a rotarymovement to the shaftltit', while pivoted to the frame is a pawl 2lnormally engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel 17 to prevent retrograde movement of the shaft when the handle is moved in the reverse direction to obtain a new grip uponthewheel. 'Arranged at the opposite, side of .the frame A, and secured upon the shaft 16 for rotation therewith is a pulley 22 having a substantially V-shaped peripheral wire receiving'groove 23, while upon one end ofthe shaftl6 and held asso the flange 2% of the pulley defined by. said groove is formed with a circumferential series of teeth 25. The other flange 26 is provided with a plurality ofelongated slots 27 arranged directly opposite the teeth 25, and in which are arranged the gripping memhere 28. The members 28 are formed at a point in their length with lugs 29 pivotally mounted between the spaced ears 30 projecting. from the flange 26 at the opposite sides of the slots therein. Obviously the grippingmembers 28 are mounted for pivotal movement, and adapted to cooperate with the teeth 25 to effectively maintain the wire positioned within the groove in the pulley 22. For this purpose each of the gripping members has its portion adjacent the teeth 25 beveled as at 81, and its opposite side beveled in an opposite direction as at 32 for the purpose to be presently described.
Nith a view of successively moving the gripping members 28 into effective engagement with the wire within the groove 23, as the pulley is rotated I employ a controlling member 33, preferably consisting of an arcuate shaped strip 3st arranged to engage approximately half of the flange 26, and disposed about the marginal edge thereof overlying the slots27. The arcuate shaped strip has its opposite ends connected by means of a cross piece 36 through which and the block 37 carried thereby extends one end of the shaft 16. One end of the strip 3st is extended beyond the periphery of the pulley and terminates in a substantially L-shaped offset portion, the arm 38 of which is secured to one of the limbs 5 of the rim A, and cooperates with the arm 39 to guide the wire into the groove in the pulley 22. The'strip 3a is so closely associated with the flange 26 of the pulley that as the latter is rotated in one direction the beveled surface 82 of the gripping members engage the arcuate shaped strip and are successively moved thereby within the groove 22 into effective engagement with the wire, and held in this position by means of the arcuate shaped member approximately one-half a revolution of the pulley. As the gripping members 28 are successively moved from beneath the strip 34 during the continued rotation of the pulley,'the innermost ends of the members are engaged by a cam surface i0 formed on the block 37, and thereby rocked upon their pivot to move the actuating ends of the members 28 out of the groove in the pulley, to permit the wire to be easily inserted within said groove. Obviously by reason of the manner in which the wire is automatically gripped during the rotation of the pulley, together with the general construction and compactness of arrangement of parts, the device can be conveniently handled and easily and quickly manipulated for the purpose intended. However, while I have shown and described what I now consider the preferred embodiment of Copies of this patent may be obtained for the invention, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to this precise construction, as various changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is 2- I 1. Awire stretcher comprising a frame, means for supporting the same, a pulley journaled in said frame and having a pcripheral groove, wire gripping members pivotally associated with said pulley, stationary means for automatically moving said members into operative position as the pulley is rotated, and means for rotating said pulley.
A wire stretcher comprising a frame, means for supporting the latter, a pulley journaled upon said frame and having a peripheral groove, teeth on said pulley disposed" at one side of the groove, members pivotally associated with said pulley, stationary means for successively moving said members into gripping relation wi 11 respect to said teeth upon rotation of the pulley, 'and means for operating the latter.
3. A wire stretcher comprising a frame, a pulley mounted for rotation thereon, and having a peripheral wire receiving groove, means for rotating said pulley, gripping members pivotally associated with said pulley, and stationary means for successively rocking said members on their pivots in opposite directions to move each member into and out of gripping position within the groove during the rotation of said pulley.
4. A wire stretcher comprising a frame, supporting means therefor, a pulley mounted for rotation thereon and having a peripheral wire receiving groove, means for rotating the pulley, 'ipping members pivot ally associated with the pulley, a stationary arcuate shaped member disposed above said members and adapted to be engaged and moved thereby upon partial rotation of the pulley into operative position within said groove, and means on said arcuate member for moving said members to inoperative position upon further rotation of said pulley.
