APPLICATION vFILED APR. 20, 1916.

il n J8 N, UNITED sirnrusrnrunr (WELCHl FRANK A. sHIMANs, or orrIcAso. ILLINOIS.
To all whom it may concern.'
lBe it,` known that I, FRANK A.`SH1MANs, a citizen of the United States, andv al resident ofthe city of Chicago, county of'Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor-Homes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in razor hones, and has for its object the production of a device ofthis character Vthrough the medium of which circular blades may be sharpened with easeand expedition.
A further object is the production of a razor blade sharpening device which will be of simple construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear' hereinafter.
lith these objects in view, the invention consists in the combinations and arrange-r ments of yparts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the vaccompanying drawing forming a ypart of this specification, and in which,
Figure l ris a. side elevation of a razor hone embodying the'invention, Fig'Q is a top plan vview thereof, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the device.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a pair of spaced parallel sharpening elements 1 and l ywhichar'e mounted 'in anelongated support "2 which is in the form of ya trough supported at its ends upon legs 3. Coperating with the support *2 is a second support 4 of substantially channel form, the support 4 being provided with' projections 5 at its ends which slidablyengage with elongated slots 6 formed in the legs-3 wherel by the support 4 may be shifted transversely relative to the support 2. The member 4 serves as a support for a plurality of spaced blade holders or shafts 7 which extend transversely of the device. Corresponding ends of said blade holders are rotatably mounted in the side wall 4 of the support 4, the opposite ends of said blade holders releasably engaging with upwardly opening slots or notches 8 formed in the upper edge of the opposite wall 4". The last mentioned ends of blade holder 7 are releasably locked in engagement with the slots 8 by means of an elongated bar 9 one end of which is hinged at 10, the opposite end thereof being releasably locked in operative position by means of a thumb screw 11.

holders7by means of nuts 13,the`arrange f ment beingsuch that when saidjblades are y arranged iiponisaid holders, the lower portions of said Lblades will beyposition'ed be` tween the sharpening elements 1 and 1f Rotation of 'the holders '7 and hence yof blades '12 carried thereby isfene'cted by means vof bevel gears 14r providedupon the holders? "which mesh `with bevel'gears 15 provided upon a shaft 16 which is mounted in bearings projecting laterally from the wall V4 of support`4. Withthis arrangement, itwill beseen that when the shaft 16 is rotated, as through the medium of a crank 17 all 0f the blades 12 will be simultaneously rotated.
Arranged below the support 4 aretwo cams 18 fixed to a shaft 19 whichismountedfatits ends in the legs 3. The cams 18 engage lwith 'slotted lugs 20 which dependr from the support 4'so'that, upon rotation of shaft19,said support and hence the blades 12 carried thereby will be rnoved` trans-r versely. With this arrangement,y it 4will be seen, that by simply 'rotatingthe'shaft 19, as through ythe medium [of a crank 21 pro` videdat one end thereof, the blades 12 may bevmoved to engagement with either of the sharpening ' elements 1 or 1 inorder to effelc't 'proper sharpening of the "blades'which, of course, may only be eHe'c-tedthrough en gagement with both sides yof the same.
Withthis arrangementk then, it will be seen, that in the sharpening operation, the blades -will be intermittentlyshifted to engage first with one sharpening element and thenwith the other, the same being'rotated in engagement with 'said sharpening'elements by operation of crank 17. y
The vside wall 4 of the support 4 is hinged as at 22 so as to permit of outward swinging of the same to carry the remote ends of blade holders 7 upwardly from engagement with the wall 4 when the .locking bar 9 is swung to releasing position.
` This arrangement is adopted in order to facilitate application of the blades to the holder 7 or removal of the same therefrom, it being clear that with the construction set forth, application or removal may be very easily kand quickly effected.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capa lOl@ .Of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims. Y
Having described my invention` What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A razor hone comprising a pair of spaced sharpening elements; a support for said sharpening elements; a plurality of rotatable holders for the blades to be sharpened arranged above said sharpening elements and extending transversely thereof; a support for said holders mounted for transverse shifting yrelative to said first mentioned support, whereby the blades may be carried into engagement with either of said sharpening elements; means for shifting said second mentioned support; and means for simultaneously rotating all of said blade holders, substantially as described.
2. 4A razor hone comprising a pair of spaced sharpening elements; a support for said sharpening elements; a plurality of rotatable holders for the blades to be sharpened arranged above said sharpening elements and extending transversely thereof; an support for vsaid holders mounted for transverse shifting relative to said first mentioned support, whereby the blades may be carried into engagement with either of said sharpening elements; means for shifting said second mentioned support; means for simultaneously rotating all of said blade holders,
said last mentioned means comprising a shaft extending along said second mentioned support; and a gear connection between said shaft'and all of said blade holders, substantially as described.
3.. A razor hone comprising a pair of spaced sharpening elements; a support Vfor said sharpening elements; a plurality of rotatable holders for the blades to be sharpened arranged above said sharpening elements and extending transversely thereof; a support for said holders mounted for transverse shifting relative to said first mentioned support, whereby the blades may be carried into engagement With either of said sharpening elements; means for shifting said second mentioned support; means for simultaneously rotating all of said blade holders; and means for releasably mounting in operative position the ends of said blade holders at one side of said second mentioned support, the opposite ends of said blade holders being mountedin the opposite side of said support, said last mentioned side of said support being hingedly mounted, substantially as described.
a. A razor hone comprising a pair of spaced sharpening elements; a support for said sharpening elements; a plurality of rotatable holders for the blades to be sharpened arranged above said sharpening element-sand extending transversely thereof; a support for said holders mounted for transverse shifting relative to said first mentioned support, whereby the blades may be carried into engagement with either of said sharpening elements; means for shifting said second mentioned support; means for releasably mounting in operative position the ends of said blade holders at one side of said second mentioned support, the opposite ends of said blade holders being mounted' in the opposite side of said support, said last mentioned side of said support being hingedly mounted; means for simultaneously rotating all of said blade holders, said last mentioned means comprising a shaft extending along and mounted upon said hinged side of said second mentioned support; and a gear connection between said shaft and all of said blade holders, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
