IMPROVEMENT IN THIMBLES FIIR MAKING ATTACHMENTS T0 STEAM-BUILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,017, dated November 14, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALLAN TALBOTT, of Richmond, in. the county of Henrico, and State of Virginia, have invented certain Improvements and C, the feet or flanges ofthe engine-frame.
D are bushings or thiinbles with solid bottoms, and E the securing-bolts. `The bushings D are screwed or riveted securely into the boiler-plate and become a part of the boiler. llhe bolts E, passing through the foot or flan ge or whatever is to be secured, are screwed into the bushings D. By this method the bolts are protected from the action of steam and water, thereby prevent ing leaks, either by the bolts rusting or eating out or by their becoming loose from any strain that may be put upon them. The bolts have longer thread-bearings than can be obtained by the usual methods, and being protected from 0X- idation they can be removed, after being screwed in for any length of time, without breaking the bolts or stripping the threads.
The invention is particularly adapted for use in making' attachments to steam-boilers which leak around the bolts, owing to their threads being eaten away or their becoming loose, as by the use ofthe bushing the same size bolt can be used, thus obviating the necessity of drilling a larger hole in the portions connected for the purpose of putting in a larger bolt, as is usual.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe bushings or thimbles with solid bottoms, screwed or riveted into boilers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
