The grid element 9 is reciprocated by means of a rod 17 which is hingedly connected at 18 to the bar 1%, and the rear end of, the rod 17 is hingedly connected at 19 with a swinging arm 20 fulcrumed at 21, such arm having a member 22 which is wiped by a rotating cam 23 on the shaft 24:, so that with each rotation of the shaft 2& the cam 23 will actuate the member 22, and this in turn swings the arm 20 to the right, Fig. 1, and causes the grid element 9 to move in the same direction. The grid element is returned from the position shown in Fig. 6 to that shown in Fig. 1 by a counterbalance weight or equivalent means 25 supported on an arm 26 connected with the shaft 21.
Cooperating with the grid element 9 is a depresser 27 in the form of a grid composed of U-shaped bars28 having their ends connected with transverse bars 29 which are fastened to arms 30 that swing on a horizontal shaft 31. The members 28 of the swinging grid element 27 are sospaced as to enter between the members 13 of the horizontally movable grid element 9 so that the engage the article and the element 9 and move such article downwardly below the plane of the element 9 when the latter is withdrawn, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and the grid element 27 remains in this position during the return movement of the grid element 9, the members 13 thereof moving between the members 28 of the upper grid element 27, as shown in Fig; 7. After the parts are in this position the upper grid element moves upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1, so as to make way for the next article delivered by the conveyer C. The upper grid element is actuated by a swinging arm 32 fastened to a horizontal shaft 33 and connected by a link 3a to the upper grid element. 011 the shaft 33 is an arm 35 that is engaged by a rotary wiping cam 36 on the shaft 24, and also on the shaft 33 is an arm 37 which has a counterbalance weight 38, which weight raises the upper grid element while the cam 36 depresses the same. The cams 23 and 36 are so spaced with respect to each other that the grid elements 9 and 27 move in timed relation to each other and to the article-folding and delivering mechanism of the machine.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together G in the with the apparatus which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
'Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
"1. A device of the class described comprising a yieldingly mounted vertically movable horizontal follower on which a pile of articles is adapted to be formed, a conveying means for horizontally supplying articles successively on the follower, a horizontal grid overlying the follower or pile thereon and arranged to receive an article from the conveyer, said grid and conveying means being disposed in meetingrelation for permitting articles to pass directly to the grid from the conveying means, means for moving the grid parallel with the plane of the article thereon, means for holding the article from moving with the grid, and a device for engaging the article and moving the same out of the plane of the grid to permit the latter to return to its former position for receiving the next article.
2. A device of the class described comprising a yieldingly mounted vertically movable horizontal follower on which a pile of articles is adapted to be formed, a conveying means for I horizontally supplying articles successively on the follower, a horizontal grid overlyin the follower or pile thereon and arranged to receive an article from the conveyer, said grid and conveying means being disposed in meeting relation for permitting articles to pass directly to the grid from the conveying means,
means for moving the grid parallel with the plane of the article thereon, means for holding the article from moving with the grid, a device for engaging the article and moving the same out of the plane of the grid to permit the latter to return to its former position for, receiving the next article, and a device disposed at the side of the grid opposite from the follower and movable toward and from the follower and having members disposed parallel with and engageable between the members of the grid for pressing the pile of articles downwardly when the grid is withdrawn for permitting the grid to return to normal position and,

3. A pile-forming device comprising a horizontally movable element having a plurality'of spaced finger-like bars, a conveyer located at the top side of the bars to deliver articles successively on the element, stationary means extending upwardly between the bars to form stops to arrest the articles delivered upon the element, a yielding follower at one side of the element, means for ment to engage an article thereon and move such article and pile of articles on the follower, whereby the first-mentioned grid can I return to a position over the top of the pile of articles, the free ends of the bars being arranged to meet the delivery end of the conveyer for permitting articles to pass di- 10 rectly from the latter to the said bars.
