vTo all whom if may concern Be it known that I, HALvoR LYCHE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Washing-lilacliines, of which the following is-a full, clear, and er; act specification, as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthe specification.

My invention relates to Washing machines in which a rotary barrel yis provided, and has for one of its objects. to improve the construction and increase the ethciency and utility of machines of this character.` A further object of the invention is to produce a machine in which the lifting of the customary heavy cover and barrel section preparatory to the insertion or removal of the clothes is obviated, and wherein a portion of this cover serves as a retaining apron during the passage of the clothing from the barrel to the wringen A still furtherobject is the provision of means in a machine of this character for preventing articles of clothing, and the like, from falling back into the space between the barrel and `the body of the machine during insertion ,into and removal of the clothes out of the barrel. These, together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear. or are incident to my invention, I attain by means of the construction illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fignre 1 represents a plan view of my iinproved Washing machine;

Referring to the figures, the numeral 10 indicates the body of the machine supported on the legs 11, and within the body is mernited the rotary peforate barrel or cyl* inder 12. Attachedto the front end 13 of the body is a gear casing 111- designed to inclose the motor and gearing which impart reverse rotary .movement to the barrel, and upon this casing 14e is mounted the .Wringer 15 adjacent the open top of the body 10, which opening is large enough to permit the passage therethrough of the barrel `Whenthe interior of the body requires eleaning.

Extending over this opening is a cover 1C having downwardly bent side margins 17 and a similarly bent end marginal portion 18 at that end of the cover remote from the ivringer 15. external to and contact with the corresponding upper edge portions of the body 10 in order to maintain the cover in position and permit sliding of the same to its retracted position at the rear end of the body, as shown in Figure 3, the said rear end having side studs 19 adapted to be engaged by hooks Q0 provided on the front ends of the side marginal portions 17, and by means of which the cover is supported in its retracted p osition.

Heretofore it has been necessary, whenever articles 'of clothing were to be placed in the 'barrel for washing or to'be taken out when clean, to remove the customary heavy cover in each instance, and when removed, the opening being considerably larger than the barrel afforded constant opportunity for articles to fall into the space between the 9 barrel and the wall of the body. Furthermore, when clothing was being passed y through the wringer articles frequently fellback in like mannervand it 'was found dillicult if not impossible to recoup them without having to lift the entire barrel out of the machine.

My improved machine is designed to entirely eliminate these disadvantages, and with this end in View, I form a rectangular port 21 centrally in the cover 16 and considerably removed from its edges so that its longitudinal and lateral dimensions are ap` preciably less than that of the barrel. ln so doing, portion 22 of the cover, which porilev . closure tion 1 have designated as a retaining apron, is lett adjacent to the iront of the Wringer and is adapted to serve as a drain board and to catch any articles falling back from the rolls of the wringer during the wringing operation. This port 21 is closed by the 23 of relatively light weight When compared with the large cover 16, the closure being provided with a suitable hand-hold 24 by Which-it can readily and easily be lifted -to uncover the port 21 when articles of clothing are to be placed into or removed from the barrel. p

The numeral 25 designates a removable segmental barrel section of such dimension as to permit its removal through the port 21, and as shown in Figure 2 the section is .positioned lengthwise intermediate the bridging head ends 26 and v27 of the main body portion of the barrel 12 the iront end 27 being positioned directly under the apron portion 22 of the cover 16. Side flanges 28 are also provided to depend toward the barrel from the inner side margins of the cover.

lt will thus be seen that While the large cover 16 may be slidabljf retracted to permit the cleansing of the body of the machine, yet the more requentlyrecurring operation of handling the clothinginvolves the use and employment et' a port opening smaller than the barrel in order to obviate loss of articles of clothing as hereinbefore more fully set out, the employment of a lighter and more portable closure member to close the port and of a segmental barrel section capable of being easily raised through the port, a portion ot the cover serving as a retaining apron during the passage of the clothing in the barrel and through the port to the Wringci.

'From the foregoing, .the essential elements, features and ope 'ation of my improved machine, together with its simplicity and other advantages thereof, will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.

1.. ln laundry apparatus, the combination of a washing machine body having an open Lacasse top length and breadth of said body, a substan- I'tially fiat removable main/cover for closing said open top provided `with a centrally disposed port in its vlat surface, a barrel for said body insertible thereinto through said open top and havingan opening disposed intermediate side and end portions ofthe same, a closure section for said opening and lil'table bodily through said port, and a supn plementary removablei cover for said port superposed upon and end portions of the main cover about said port projecting invvardly Y)from the body of the machine to extend over those side and end portions of the barrel about its opening, and one of the said end portions of the main cover adapted to serve as a upon removal of the supplementary cover, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. y

A Washing machine comprising in combination a bodyv formed with an open top containing a barrel provided with a segmental opening and a lid for said opening, a main cover for said body constructed to permit removal of the barrel through said open top, said main cover substantially horizontally disposed in a plano above the ripheral boundary of said barrel and hai/ng a port constructed to permit removal of the lid, side and end portions of said main cover extending inwardly from said body over said ,main cover, 'the side retaining apron substantially (3o-extensive with the corresponding portions of the barrel about said opening, and a supplementary portable cover for sid port. y
