CLOTHES-WRING-ER.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Pg fi qgjmt gd 113 19 5 Application-filed February 12, 1916. Serial No. 79,769.
washing machines, and has for one of its.
objects to improve the'constructionand increase the elhci ency and utility of devices of this characteng A further object of my invention is the provision of a novel safety device designed for the purpose of prevent ing the operators hands being carried to and caught in the rolls of the wringer. My invention contemplates the provision of a unitary drainboard and endless belt -con veyer for conveying articles of clothing to the rolls of the wringer, which is furthermore constructed to shed or convey water back to its source irrespective of in what direction the wring'er is operated.
These, together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear, or are incident to my invention, I attain by means of the construction illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein: I
Figure 1 is an end view of a wringer with my device attached and a portion of the wringer frame broken away to expose the mechanism to view. Figure 2*is a front viewof the same. Figure 3, a perspective view embodying. the preferred construction of my improvements, omitting the conveyer belt Similar characters refer to similar" parts throughout the several views.
The frame 1 and rollers 2 and 3 represent parts common to clothes wringers,
while my safety devices and attachments consist-of a pair of brackets 4:, provided with screw holes 5, for mounting the same on-the-wringer; other holes 6, in the upper part of the brackets are located adjacent to andabove the roller 3, for suitable hinge pins 7, on which are mounted guards 8 on each side of and extending the entire length I of the roller. j v
The lower edges 9, of aforesaid guards.
come in .eontact ;with the surface of the roller 3,, at a 'pointin a line tangent to the periphery'of said roller and passing through the center of the hinge pin 7.
In the cross section, or end View, eachguard is approximately the contour of onehalf of a heart, suspended so that the preponderan'ce of weight will be on the outside to insure the edges 9, being kept bearlng against the roller and also to form an efficient guard.
The lever action thus obtained is efiec tive in stripping any clothes which may for any reason adhere to the wringer roller; even to the extentof swinging away from the roller and directing the clothes thus caught down to the conveyer belt hereinafter described.
To. keep the guards central between the end frames ,of the wringer, I have shown spacers-10 near each end of the hinge pins 7. The numeral 12 designates a drainboard provided with the sides 17 recessed at 18 to clear the lower w'ringer roll 2 and having abase sloping up from each end to a center ridge or watershed 16. Spaced rollers 13 are carried in the sides 17 and brackets 41:
through the instrumentality of the bearing members 11 and the studs or pins'14, which latter extend through the bearing members 11 from the rollers 13 into the outer ends ofthe brackets ,4. Passed around the rollers 13 is an endless-beltf conveyer 15 having its upper stretch disposed inthe pass ofthe rolls 2 and 3 and whose lower stretch is located 'adiacently over the Watershed of j the drainboard.
Thus it is to .be clearly understood that thisconstruction is adapted .to convey the water back to the side from which it came, without the added process of tilting the board, as is the case on former devices for this purpose when the rotation of the wrmger is reversed. To secure my devicemore firmly .to the Wringer frame I have tance from the wringer.
. It 1s obvious that the water pressed from the clothes will return on the inclined upcarrying the wet clothes.
- The guards 8, which "prevent the hands per surface of the belt and that which drips shed adjacent to the side of the conveyer of'the operator from the danger of being caught between the wringer rollers may be raised to the position indicated by broken lines in Figure 1 for the purpose of inspecting and cleaning the wringer rollers.
I am aware that prior to my invention, safety devices for clothes wringers have been made with conveying belts. I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly but I claim:
1. In combination, a wringer frame pro- I vided with upper and lower wringer rolls,
a base and side frame members, spaced rollers carried by said side frame members, and an endless belt conveyer extending around the rollers and having its upper stretch disposed in the pass of the rolls and its lower stretch intermediate the lower roll and the base of the drainboard, the upper stretch of the belt conveyer and the base of the drainboard substantially correspondingly inclined whereby to shed the water in a direction away from the rolls.
3. In combination, a wringer frame provided with upper and lower wringer rolls,
a drainboard carried by the frame having outwardly extending side frame members, spaced rollers terminally carried by said side frame members, and an endless belt conveyer extending around said rollers and having its upper stretch disposed in the pass of the rolls and its lower stretch below the lower roll, and a stripper guard member pivotally carried by said side frame members and having its lower free edge portion extending toward the pass of the rolls to contact peripherally with the upper roll, said edge portion slightly removed from the upper stretch of the belt conveyer.
4. In combination, a wringer drainboard comprising side frame'members and a base connecting said members, spaced rollers having bearing members pro ecting laterally through the side frame members, and
attaching brackets extending longitudinally of the side frame members and constructed to terminally engage the projecting bearing members of the rollers.
. 5. In combination, a wringer frame provided with upper and lower wringer rolls, a drainboard having an arched base constitutinga Water shed for said rolls and side frame members therefor extending outwardly at each side of the wringer frame,
spaced rollers terminally carried by said outwardly extending side frame members,
an endless belt conveyer extending around the rollers and having its upper stretch disposed in the pass of the rolls and its lower stretch extending horizontally and adjacently across the apex of the archedbase, and means for detachablyfconnecting the drainboard to the wringer frame.
6. In combination, a wringer frame provided with upper and lower rotary wringer rolls, ,an endless belt conveyer having its upper stretch disposed in'the pass of said rolls and its lower stretch Located below the lower roll, and a stripper guardmember associated at its upper end with said frame and constructed to extend'toward the upper. stretch of said conveyer and then inwardly toward the pass of the rolls, the lower edge portion of said member adapted to'peripherally contact with the upper roll, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
