PLASTIU COMPOSITIGN FOR MAKING FIRE-BRICKS.
Specification 'of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1916 Ho Drawing. Original application filed January S, 1916, Serial No. 70,983. Divided and this application Be it known that I, EARL V. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Plastic Composition for Male ing Fire-Bricks, of which the following is a specification.
My composition consists of the following named ingredients combined in substantially the proportions here stated, namely: coal ash, 100 pounds; alumina, 2 pounds; Water, 2 to 2?} gallons.
It is not intended to confine the discovery here applied for to the use of the ingredients specified in the proportions stated, as these proportions may in some cases be advantageously varied producing substantial identity of result. To illustrate: If the fusion point of the coal ash is found to be less than 2600 degrees Fahrenheit, or if a high fusion point for the fire bricks is desired, the ,percentage of alumina used is to be increased. Thus, taking 100 pounds of coal ash as a basis whose fusion point is 2600 degrees Fahrenheit, to this is added 2 pounds of alumina which will raise the fusion point of the mixture to 3000 (2950 to 3100) degrees F, hrenheit. If on account of foreign subs ances in the coal ash its fusion point is found to be below 2600 degrees Fahrenheit the percentage of alumina must be correspondingly increased to produce the above named result, the percentages being based.

Then place the bricks in a closed drying oven and dry for six to eight hours at a temperature of 500 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the bricks While hot to aclosed burning kiln whose temperature is graduallyincreased from 2200 to 2400 degrees Fahrenheit at which temperature the bricks are fired for seven to eight days, when they are allowed to cool gradually, resulting in the finished product.
I am aware that prior to my invention and discovery various quantities of coal ashes have been mixed with clay for the purpose of producing vitrified paving bricks having practically no porosity and consequently no absorptive qualities. I am also aware that it has been attempted to manufacture fire bricks from mixtures of coal ashes. shale and fire clay; that fire bricks may be produced without the addition of coal ashes from mixtures of clay and diflicultly fusible materials, such as ground burnt fire cl 1 am not aware, however, that fire bricks having the necessary porous and heat resisting qualities and adequate crushing strength to make them commercially valuable have ever been produced from a mixture consisting essentially of finely ground coal ashes with the addition of only a small proportion of alumina such as specified above, or that the ingredients specified have been mixed, molded and burned in any other proportions to make fire bricks, prior to my invention and discovery thereof.
What I claim:
The herein described plastic composition for making fire bricks, consisting of coal ashes, one hundred pounds; alumina two pounds; water two to two and one-half gallons, substantially as described.
