ROBERT JEFFERY, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HLMSELF, JAMES L. SHUTE, AND WILLIAM T. MERCHANT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FISHING-SEINES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,974, dated November 14, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known Jthat I, ROBERT JEFFERY, of Gloucester, and State of Massachusetts, have in- Vented a new and useful or Improved Seine for Iaking Fish, and do hereby declare the saine to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, which is a representation of it and its pursinglines.
The main body A of the seine is like a common seine-that is, it is a long rectangular net. At the middle of the lower edge of such body, and at some distance along such edge, such body is netted out or projected, or made with a triangular projection or extension, B, the arrangement of such with respect to the body part A being as shown. The said projection I consider best to be an isosceles triangle in shape, but it may be varied from such. To the opposite edges ofthe projection and the lower edge of the body part A, I apply pursing-lines, or, in other words, two main lines, C C, and sundry branch lines a. a. a, the main lines being led through guides or rings attached to the lower edge of the seine, the whole being so as to enable a person, by pulling either main pursing-line in a direction away from the seine, to bring together the next adjacent edges of the parts AB. Both pursinglines C C being drawn in simultaneously until the edges of the bottoming or projection B and those of the body A are closed together, will effect the pursing of the seine. The part B I term the bottoming, as when the seine is pursed or being pursed such part B makes a bottom for it to prevent the escape of fish.
Vith a seine as made, with a bottoming formed and applied to its lower edge, and arranged therewith as shown and described, the chance of capturing lish when the seine is in use will be greatly enhanced. Like a common rectangular seine it can be used to surround a shoal of sh, the bottoming being dragged underneath them and subsequently pursed with the rest or body part the body portion A and the extension or bottoming B, when, arranged together as set forth.
