Application filed May 23, 1916. Serial No. 99,413.
The invention relates to an axle truing de vice and more particularly to the class of machines for truing car journals.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character wherein the car journal within the journal box can be accurately trued and smoothed without necessitating the removal of the journal from the box or the wheels therefrom.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form so that it can be mounted relative to the journalbox and the truing member engaged about the journal for the truing and smoothing thereof with despatch after the journal has been jacked, thus obviating the necessity of the removal of the wheel from the journal or the removal of the journal from the journal boxes in a car truck.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a niaclrine of this character wherein the truing member is adjustable throughout the length of the journal and is rotated for the smoothing of the surface of said journal.
A. still further object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and etiicient in operation, readily portable, the shy rendering the same handy and convenient for use in truing car journals with despatch and also which is inexpensive in manufacture.
Gther objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
.The invention accordin l consists in the features of construction, combination of elements arrangement of parts which will exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a journal box showing the device constructed in ac cordance with the invention applied and partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the 80 journal showing the truing element and gearing therefor; Fig. 5 is a vertical longi tudinal sectional view through the truing element; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the truing element; Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the tool holder with the cutting tool therein.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally a journal box and B the car journal therein, which are of the usualwell known construction, while C designates generally a jack which may be of any approved type for the raising of the journal box and supporting the same when the truing machine is used, the latter being hereinafter fully described.
Thetruing machine comprises a base 10 having near one end thereof an upright l l: on which is mounted a rotatable driving gear 12 operated through the medium of a hand crank 13 and meshing with this gear is a pinion 14 which is fixed to a driven shaft 15, the latter being formed with a 1011-: gitudinal groove or channel 16 for receiving the spline or key 17 of a slidable gear 18 which is loose upon the shaft 15 and is adapted for longitudinal adjustment thereon, yet will rotate with the shaft.
Threaded through the pinion is an adjusting screw 19 which is loosely connected with the gear 18 so as to feed the same longitudinally of-the shaft 15, the outer end of the screw 19 being formed with a handle 20 for the turning of the screw to permit the con venient adjustment thereof for moving the gear 18 to feed the same longitudinally of the shaft supporting it.
Detachably and adj u stably connected to the journal box A is a bracket 21 which is formed with a bearing 22 in which is journaled the shaft 15, and this bracket 21 serves as a support for the said shaft.
Adapted to be mounted upon the journal B interiorly of the journal box A is a rotatable 'truing member comprising a ring 23 formed in its outer peripheral face with gear the ring 28, and with these teeth 2& mesh the slidable gear 18 which is held in a meshing engagement by means of the flanges 25 so that on the longitudinal movement of the gear 18 upon the shaft 15 the ring 23 will move therewith upon the journal B. De-
tachably fitted in the inner periphery of the ring 23 is a series of spaced emery blocks 26 which are yieldably held upon leaf springs 27, and these blocks contact with the surface of the journal B for the truing and smoothing thereof on the rotation of the ring 23 by the gear 18 meshing with the teeth 2 1 .there on upon rotation of the shaft 15 which is actuated by the driving gear 12 of the machine.
In one edge of the ring 23 are formed holes 28 for the detachable fitting thereon of a tool holder 29 which supports a cutting tool 30 adapted to act upon the journal when necessary for the truing thereof, and this tool 30 and holder 29 are only used when the journal is in bad condition, thereby expediting the truing and smoothing of the same.
The shaft 15 at its inner end has removably fitted therein a bearing point 31 which is adapted to engage in the inner wall of-the ournal box A for holding the shaft in proper position when the machine is set for use. Primarily the bearing point 31 is removed and in lieu thereof is inserted in the shaft 15 a suitabledpili for the boring of the wall of the journal box to form a seat for the bearing point 31 when it is desired to propel said tool for the truing of the journal as hereinbefore set forth. It is of course understood that the journal box is jacked and thereafter the journal bearing and packing are removed prior to the setting of the machine for the truing of the journal, as is clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawing.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the herein described truing device will be readily unt'icpies at this patent may he obtained for are cents each, by addressing the Dummies aaoaeea derstood and, therefore, a more extended ere vpla-nation hasbeeii omitted.
Having thus described my invention, 1
other, and means for rotating the shaft and supported by the stand.
Eli
2. A machine of the class described comprising a stand, a driven shaft journaled in said stand, a bracket for connecting the shaft to a journal box, a gear slidable on to the shaft, a rotatable truing' element adapted tc embrace the car journal within the journal box and operated by the gear, emery blocks detachably and yieldably supported internally of said element, means on the element and engageable with the gear to hold the same in meshing relation with each other, means for rotating the shaft and supported ment and engageable-with the gear to hold the same in meshing relation with each other, means for rota tlng the sha t and supported by the stand, means for feeding the gear longitudinally on the shaft, and a 06%1", ing point removably fitted in the shaft engageabie with the journal box.
In testimony whereof I aii'ix my signature.
