To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID M; JONES, a'citizen of the United'Sta-tes,residing at Gastonia, in. the county of Gaston and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new andnseful Improvements in Lever-Hoisting Supports for Scales, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to weighing devices and particularly to a lever hoisting support for such devices, especially adapted for use in connection with beam scales-or the like.
The principal characteristic of the invention resides in facilitating the weighing of material, such as cotton; to which end, one feature of the invention consists in providing a device by which oneman may readily accomplish what has heretofore required the manipulation of two or more men.
Another characteristic resides in providing a device which will facilitate the use of beam scales in buildings, such as warehouses, having low ceilings.
Still another characteristic resides in so constructing the device that it may be transferred from place to place, and in this manner enable a large quantity of material to be weighed without transporting it-to a set of permanently fixed scales; to which end, another feature of the invention consists in producing a portable weighing device embodying a supporting frame for scales which could be easily transferred to any desired locality.
A further feature consists in providing a device to produce the above results, embodying a simple and cheap construction, yet efficient in carrying out its intended use.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, and will be hereinafter described with reference thereto, as applicable to beam scales, but its use is not to be understood as limited to this particular type of scale, as it may be used in connection with other weighing devices of this general character with the same advantageous results.
In said drawing Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is an end view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 1 represents the support which may be constructed in any desired manner, but preferably as shown, comprising a horizontal beam 2 supported on the legs' 3, which are braced by the rungs ,4 and the block 5. The hoisting or elevating means preferably embodies in its structure, a double set of levers 6 and 7, one of which, namely lever 6, comprises a manipulating handle suitably pivoted to the support at its shortend by the clamp 8, which in turn performs the function of a brace as well as a pivotal mounting for the handle. Thislever 6 is connected to the end of lever 7 by the link 9, and the lever 7 is mounted, at its short end, on the beam 2 by the fulcrum 10, which fulcrum has a shank 11 extending through the beam and bolted on the under side thereof to hold the clamp 8 and one end of the diagonal: brace 12, the other end of the diagonal brace being bolted to the brace block 5 through the clamp 8. Again referring to lever 7, the short end thereof is pivotally connected to a suitable scale balance 13, which is slidably mounted in the transverse opening 14 extending through the beam 2, and provided with a loop 15 for hanging the scale '16. The conneotionsbetwee'n the levers and their associated parts are preferably rivets or other equivalent means.-
It-is to be seen that with the device thus constructed, the scale may be elevated and lowered by the manipulation of the handle 6. When it is desired to retain the scale in an elevated position, the handle may be retained down by the catch 17 provided for this purpose on the lower rung 4 of the support.
The device contemplated by the invention will enable material to be Weighed, such for instance as a large bale of cotton which is too heavy for one man to lift and place on the scales, by placing it under the scales, or if desired, the scales placed over the material, and lowering the scales, by raising the manipulating handle to a position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1; then hook the material to the scales as it rests on the floor, then by pulling down on the handle raise the scales and elevate the material off the floor when its weight can then be determined.
I claim 1. In combination with a. weighing device having means for receiving material to be weighed, of a support, means on said support adapted to control the elevation of the Weighing device relatively to the support; said means comprising a double set of levers, one of Which is fulcrumed to the support and comprises means for balancing the Weighing device, and said other lever comprises a manipulating handle pivoted to said support and connected to said fulcrumed lever.
2. In combination With a Weighing device having means for receiving material to be Weighed, of a support, means on said support adapted to control the elevation of the weighing device relatively to the support; said means comprising a double set of levers, one of Which is fulcrumed to the support and comprises means for balancing the Weighing device, and said other lever comprises a manipulating handle pivoted to said support and connected to said fulcrumed lever; and means coacting With said manipulating handle for retaining the Weighing device in elevated position.

In combination With a Weighing device having means for receiving material to be Weighed, of a support for said device, means for elevating the Weighing device to weigh ing position, comprising a double set of levers, one of said levers being fulcrumed on the support and having a balance for the Weighing device; said other lever being pivoted to the support and connected to the fulcrumed lever through a link connection and adapted to control the elevation of the Weighing device to Weighing position through the medium of its connection With said fulcrumed lever.
4c. In combination With a Weighing device having means for receiving material to be Weighed, of a support for said device, means for elevating the Weighing device to Weighing position, comprising a double set of levers, one of said levers being fulcrumed on the support and having a balance for the weighing device; said other lever being pivoted to the support and connected to the fulcrumed lever through a link connection and adapted to control the elevation of the Weighing device to Weighing position through the medium of its connection with said tulcrumed lever, and a catch on said support adapted to coact With said pivoted lever to retain the Weighing device in elevated position relatively to the support.
5. In a Weighing device, the combination of a support comprising a horizontal beam having an opening extending transversely therethrough, of a double set of levers adapted to suspend the Weighing device from said support and through said transverse opening, one of said levers being fulcrumed on said support and said other lever being pivoted to said support and connected to said fulcrumed lever through a link connection; said pivoted lever comprising a manipulating handle adapted to control the elevation of the Weighing device relatively to the support, and means on said support coacting With said manipulating handle for retaining the Weighing device in elevated position.
