To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MILLER MjDEEM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Reading, Berks county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Cycle- Saddles, of which the following is a specification. A
My invention relates to saddles for motorcycles, bicycles and the like, and more particularly to that type of saddle in which coiled compression springs are employed at the rear of the saddle frame to support or aid in supporting the cantle.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for supporting the compression springs.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saddle embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line :Uhr Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a compound spring embodying my invention, with associated parts; and Fig. a is a detached perspective view plate.
In the drawings, the saddle seat 1 is secured at the peak to the main support 2 by means of the .front springs 3 in the usual manner, and at the rear is provided with the usual cantle 4. The seat 1s also provided with the stretcher members 5 extending from the peak to the cantle andsecured to the latter by the bolts (i. Said bolts 6 also serve to secure to the cantle on either side of the saddle the arms orhangers 7, from which depend the hanger rods 8.
The main frame or support comprises side members 2 braced at the rear by the arched. member 9. Secured to the main frame at the rear on either side, by means of the bolts 10 are the coiledtension springs 11, said springs surrounding the hanger rods, as clearly shown in the drawings. Each tension spring is provided at its lower end with an eye 12, through which the lower end of the hanger rod passes, said parts being firmly secured together by means of nuts or any other suitable device.

provided with a central aperture for the passage of the hanger rod therethrough, and said plate or disk 13 serves as a seat or base plate for the lowerinost coil of the compres` sion spring 14, surrounding the hanger rod above the tension spring, and interposed between said tension spring and the cantle.
It will be understood that the lowermost coil of each compression spring is disposed in substantially a horizontal plane and is iirmly seated upon its base plate, thus overcoming or greatly decreasing the'tendcncy of the compression spring to tip or buckle under compression strains. Compression springs as heretofore employed in cycle saddle constructions, particularly where used in connection with tension springs, have had the lower end of the coil attached to the main frame or other support, and have lacked, therefore, a substantial seat or base. In my construction the action of the spring is more uniformly efficient, and the severe strain upon the lower end ot' the spring at the connecting point is avoided.
I claim:
l. In a cycle saddle, the combination with the saddle seat and main frame, of tension and compression springs supporting said. saddle seat from said main trame, and a plate carried by the uppermost coil of the tension spring and serving as a seat for the lowermost coil of the compression spring.
2. VIn a cycle saddle, the combination with the saddle seat and main frame, of a rod depending from the saddle seat, a tension spring supported at its upper end by the main frame and at its lower end secured to the lower end of said rod, a compression spring mounted between said seat and frame, and a cap plate carried by said tension spring and serving as a base plate for said compression spring.
