IMPROVEMENT IN HOG-LIFTING MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,946, dated November 14, 1871 antedated November 1, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, JOSEPH DAGLEY of Gosport, in the county of Owen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hog-Carriers and Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this speeifieation and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a plan or top view of my carrier. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section thereof.

This invention relates to a device to be used in pork-houses for the purpose of hanging the slaughtered hogs on pins 5 and it consists ofa oar with a trough so arranged that it may be run imder the hog lying on the iioor, and provided With an upright hanging device having vertical adjustment under the control of the tongue or draft-handle, and employed for the purpose of raising and hanging the hogs on pins in any desirable locality.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents the frame, composed of the side bars and crosstie, as shown. rThis frame is supported and rolls on the large wheels B and caster B. C represents the trough, attached to and depending from the sides ofthe frame A. The bottom of this trough is near the ground, so that by slightly tilting the frame it may be placed under a hog lying down. D indicates a vertical post attached to a transverse bar Dl having holes in the ends, by means of which it slides up and down on vertical rods D", which are held at the sides between the dependent brackets E and the under part of the side bars. F represents a supporting-frame, through which the post D slides. G are diverging curved arms, having hook-ends to hold the hog, which is suspended by having a gainbrel-stick passed between its legs. H denotes the tongue, divided into two arms, Hf, which are pivoted to studs I on the frame A, and connected by means of links or rods J to the bar D. 4

In using this machine it is run up to the wheel on which the hogs are gutted, or to some other place Where they are suspended, andthe hooks on the ends of the arms projecting from the vertical post brought under the gambrel-stick. The vertical post is then raised by means ofthe tongue and the hog lifted oftl the pins, after which it may be transferred to any desired place. The depending platform or scoop enables the operator to remove the entrails and offal at the same time that the dressed carcass is being transferred.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patenti 1. The combination of the frame A, wheels B, vertically-sliding post D with hook-arms G, hinged tongue H, and caster B', substantially as specified.

2. The trough O, applied to a hog-carrier, in combination with a sliding post, D, having hooks G, substantially as and for the purpose specied.

3. In a machine for carrying and hanging hogs, a vertically-sliding post, D, having hook-arms G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
