resident of Shelton. in the county of New Haven and State ot Connecticut, have invented @new and useful Improvements in Addressing Attachments 'for Duplicating Machines, of which the following is a speci ication.
My invention relates to attachments for duplicating machines used to reproduce circular or imitation t Vpe-`\vritten letters or other matter in any desired quantity. Y,
Imitation type-Written letters are usually printed by means of an inked ribbon passing' over the type form, which letters are provided with the name and address of the party to whom they are to be sent by means of' what is known as a illingn operation with a typewriter. The uneven impression resulting from this method, due to the ditferent conditions under which the body of the letter and the name and address are printed. and also due to the fact that the ribbon of the typewriter can seldom be matched exactly with that of a duplicating,` machine is very objectionable.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of suitable mechanism by means of which the abovementioned objectionable features to a separate fillingsin process are entirely7 eliminated.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an addressingr device attachable to present forms of machines, and more particularlv to the i'orm of machine disclosed in my Patent No. 1,015,256, dated January 16, 1912.
Another object is to provide an addressing` attachment in which the name plates, so called on account ot their having the name and addresse-s ot the parties included in a mailing list, for instance, are automatically discharged from the machine after the imprint is taken therefrom.
A further object is to provide a neans 'for receiving; and successively arranging, the name plates en delivered from the niachine.
Still further objects are the provision of means for removing' that portion of the ribbon passing over the name-plate so as to expose a portion of the auxiliary type-bearing` member adapted to carry the name plate and ,permit the placing of the name plate in Specification of Letters atent.

lll/*hen swinging the handle 3G upwardly', the pointof connection thereto of spring 35 is brought above the pivot 37 of said handle andY this action changes the line of draft of said spring so that it is disposed above the YVaxis of the rock-shaft 30; consequently drawing the extension 34 of the actuating lever upwardly and forwardly and retaining the upper end of said lever in its foremost position out of reach of the pin 38 on the carriage. W hen the handle 36 is in. its inoperative position, the stop 36EL thereon engages the end of support l1, but at a higher point than when said handle is in operative .posi tion. lt is apparent, therefore, that the spring 35 is under tension at all times and that the handle 3G serves to change the,line of draft of said spring so that the latter acts to draw the actuating lever inte its foremost or inoperative position when the said handle is swung upward. and into its rearward or operative position when said handle is swung downward.
The frame 3l comprises two side members 39 connected at an intermediate point by a cross-member 40 having a pair of rearwardly extending flanges 41 at its upper edge and connecting the rear ends of said side members is-a supporting bar 42 on which is adapted to rest a name plate rack 43 comprising side bars 44, side confining walls 45 and a slidable head 46. The side bars extend rearwardly and fit underneath the flanges 4l on the cross-member 40 of the frame so as to removably hold the rack on said frame.
The auxiliary type-forms, or more specifically the name plates, are delivered from the auxiliary type-bearing member 23 into the rack 43 and for the purpose of assuring prper introduction into the rack the sides 45 of the latter have upward extensions 47 at their inner ends which are slightly .flared outwardly at their upper ends to facilitate the introduction of the name plates into the rack.

Then the parts are returned to normal position, said name plate is pushed forward by said pusher-head so as to properly place the name plate withineih rack. A. slidable head 46 is held to the sides of the rack by frictional contact and is moved forwardly step by step as the pusherhead 49 pushes the successive name plates forward. The name plates ythus delivered are therefore held between said slidablehead and said pusher-head so that they at times retain a substantially vertical position. yIn this manner the successive name plates are delivered into the rack in proper succession and crowded for ard until the rack is filled when they may be removed fromthe rack or tire-.rack removed with the name plates/'therein after which an empty rack may be' placed in position to receive the name plates from the auxiliary typebearing member.
Secured to the outer ends of the rockshaft 48 are two upwardly directed arms 52 one of which has a rearward extension 53. to the extremity of which is secured one end of a retractile spring 5l having;` its other end secured to the .uljacent side member 39 of the frame 31. "With a view of limiting the upward swinging n'iovement of said extention 53 and consequently the rocking move ment of the shaft 4S, a stop on said side member is engaged by a, web 5G formed on the rear side of said rearward entension 53. At the upper ends of said arms 52 laterally-disposed sleeves 57 are provided to which are held rearwaidly-directed arms 58 by means of screws 5l) threaded into said sleeves and surrounded by expansion springs (30, one of which bears with one end against the inner face of its co-acting arm 5S and with its other end against the outer end of the sleeve 57 while the other bears with one end against the head of the screw 59 and with its other end against the inner face of its co-actingarm 5S. tightening or loosening the screws 59,y the tension of the springs can be regulated so as to govern the resistance placed against the swinging action of the arms 58.
