The piston 25 is also provided with a short piston rod or guiding membei` 32 about which is coiled a spiral spring 33 resting upon a screw cap 34 at the bottom of the chamber. A slot 35 is also provided in the upper part of the piston 25 engaged by` a set screw 36 threaded into the outer wall fof the chamber 7 to limit the up and downmovement of the piston 2 fand also to prevent relative rotation which would otherwisef carry the openings or ports 26 and 27 out of alinement with the inlet and outlet.
Now, as above explained, one of the objects of the present invention is to provide a valve which will permit a full flow drawing either4 hot or cold water, as desired, accordingto the manner rather than the direction in which the spigot is actuated. If hoti water is desired, the spigot is turned on lquickly which will relieve the pressure in the` system and particularly below the piston 12 and the head of water from the inlet 8 will force this piston downwardly, closing the outlet 10 at the upper part by reason ofthe upwardly extending flange until the opening 18 in the flange registers with `the out-let 11. This permits a clear passage of thewater through the chamber 6 to the heating coilI and spigot.` In the neath the heating coil. a full flow of cold Water is desired, or a small amount of hot water from a previous through the actuation of the device which still remains i to the outlet 28 by means of the notch 31 which does not materially reduce the back pressure beneath the piston 12. There is,
however, sufficient pressure above piston 25 to force it downwardly, thus closing the outlet 11 from the chamber 6 by the lower part4 of the piston. The main opening 26 is then in register with the passage 10, as shown in` dotted lines and the opening 27 will register l with the outlet 28. The spigot may then be 1 turned farther and allow a substantial full. head of water to pass through the device without actuating the piston 12, this being cut off from an eifective back pressure action by the lower part of the piston 25, as above explained.
It will thus be seen that the present device4 will permit the drawing of either hot or cold water as desired and will also inaterially reduce the expense of operation, inasmuch as the gas is not turned on and wasted every time the spigot is turned on.
The construction is simple and practical and inexpensive and is believed to accomplish, among others, all of the objects and advantages herein set forth.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of this invention that others can by applying current .knowledge readily adapt it for various aplency of the following claims.A
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described,
