To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY Wire-111v, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Looking Trunks, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are apart of this specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in means for locking trunks.
In trunks of the better class a plurality of keyed locking devices is usually provided for locking the trunk cover to the body portion. The independent operation of these locking devices is not convenient and requires considerable time and is otherwise objectionable.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and provide a means for locking trunks which may be controlled by a keyed engagement with but one of the looks.
A further object of the invention is to provide a means for locking trunks in which one of the locks can only be actuated after the keyed lock has been opened.
A further object of the invention is to provide a means for unlocking trunks which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose described.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved trunk locking means and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims and all equivalents thereof.

the spring hasp member 12 hinged to the barrel 14 which enters the trunk through the barrel opening 15 of the escutcheon member 13 and the bolts 16 of said barrel member lock the two parts together in the ordinary manner. The hasp member 12 is also provided with an outwardly projecting portion 17 having a recess 17 provided therein, the purpose of which will be later described. The recessed portion is positioned above the locking barrel and the recess of said portion is in register with an elongated opening 18 extending through the trunk body and the escutcheon member 13 when the hasp member is in closed position. The hasp member is provided with a spring 19 yieldingly holding the said member in its outer open position.
The controlled lock 11 is of the keyless form and comprises the spring hasp member 20 which is hinged to the cover and is adapted to swing into engagement with the escutcheon member 21 mounted on the body portion of the trunk.
The hasp member 20 is provided with an eyed projection 22 which extends into the trunk through an opening 23 formed in the escutcheon member 21 and is entered by a bolt 2% slidably mounted within a tubular portion 25 of the said escutcheon member. The bolt 24 is provided with a guide stem 26 which passes through one end wall of the tubular portion 25 and is provided with a coiled spring 27 which surrounds the stem and is interposed between the bolt and the This spring serves to yieldingly hold the bolt in looking position. .The outer end of the bolt stem is connected to the adjacent end of an actuating rod 28 by a chain 29 and the said rod is slidably mounted on the inner face of the front wall of the trunkbody. The actuating rod 28 extends through guide brackets and its opposite end terminates at a point adjacent to the elongated opening 18 of the trunk and the escutcheon member and is provided with a finger 81 which projects through said opening and into the recess 17 of the projection 17 so that when the hasp member 12 of the keyed lock is unlocked and swung to open position the finger of the actuating rod is exposed to view and may be easily pulled to release the spring bolt from its hasp member and thus unlock the trunk. In locking the trunk it is only necessary to swing the hasp members to closed positions and the lock and bolt will automatically engage their respective hasp members. If desired, a plurality of keyless locks may be controlled by the actuating rod without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the means for locking trunks is of very simple construction and that a plurality of locks may be controlled by one keyed lock.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. The combination of a trunk, of a locking means therefor, consisting of a plurality of independent locks for locking the cover to the body portion at different points, one of said locks being controlled by a key and the remaining lock being manually controlled by a means operable when the keyed lock is in unlocked position.
2. The combination of a trunk, of a look ing means therefor, comprising a plurality of independent locks for locking the cover to the body portion at different points, one
' of said locks being controlled by a key and the remaining lock being manually controlled by a slidable means operable when the keyed lock is in unlocked position.
3. A locking means, comprising a keyless hasp member, a bolt member positioned to be engaged by the hasp member, means for yieldingly holding the bolt member in locking position, a keyed hasp member spaced from the keyless hasp member, an escutcheon member engaged by the keyed hasp member when in locked position, and a means held in locked position by the keyed hasp member for moving the bolt to unlocking position.
4.. A locking means, comprising a keyless hasp member, a bolt member positioned to be engaged by the hasp member, means for yieldingly holding the bolt member in looking position, a keyed hasp member spaced from the keyless hasp member, an escutcheon member engaged by the keyed hasp member when in locked position, and a slidable member connected to the bolt member and extending to a position adjacent to the keyed hasp and to be immovably held thereby While said keyed hasp member is in locked position.
5. A locking means, comprising a keyless hasp member, a bolt member positioned to be engaged by the hasp member, means for yieldingly holding the bolt member in look ing position, a keyed hasp member having a recessed portion, an escutcheon member engaged by the keyed hasp member and having an opening registering with the recess of the keyed hasp member, and a slidable rod having a flexible connection with the bolt and extending to a position adjacent to the keyed hasp member and having a portion which extends through the escutcheon opening and into the recess of the said keyed hasp member to hold the rod in locked position when the said hasp member is in locked position.
