'To all 'whom/it may concern.-
Be it `known that I, AUGUSTUS Fi. HARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and Stateoflllinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Coal and Gas Ranges, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has `for its object to make it possible to heat the oven of a coal range by means of gas in an efficient manner,1without Ainterfering with the efficiency of the oven when coal is being burned, without greatly altering the construction of the range, and without making it diflicult or inconvenient to change from coal-heat to gas-heat. i
The various features of novelty-whereby my invention is characterized will herein- 'after be described with particularity in the claims; but, for a fullunderstanding ofmy invention and of its objecthand advantages, reference may be had-to the-following detailed description taken in-connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:r

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a coal range having theusual oven, 2. The wall, 3, of the ovennext to the lire pot, has removed therefrom a section extendingfrom the front toward the back just above the bottom wall, A, of the oven; thus providing an opening, 5, a few inches high extending approximately throughout the depth of the oven. Outside of the wall, 3, in the ash pit, 6, is acasting, 7, forming withthe wall, 3, a small chamber, 3, extending from the front to the back and communicating at the upper end with the oven through the opening, 5. The casting, 7, may conveniently be provided with a flange, 9,which extends through curved upper portion of the casting, 7
the extreme upper portion of the opening, 5, and projects into the oven so as to form a ledge just above the effective portion of the opening, 5. The exterior of the wall, 3, below the opening, 5, and the interior of the casting, 7, are preferably lined with asbestos or the like, as indicated at 10 and 11. The casting is preferably so shaped that it curves gradually inwardly toward the oven toward its upper end. In the lower portion of the casting, 7, is a door, 12, extending approximately `throughout the length thereof. The chamber, 8, is in communication with the outside atmosphere through the openings, 13, cut through the bottom wall, 14, of the miige' `u th 1 enea i e ranoe Isa as-su inoa 1 e, 15, screwed into ahead, 1gb, whiblji is sbelried to the bottom of the range just below the front end of the chamber, 8, and has its outlet end projecting upwardly through one of serving as an ignition opening through which the burner may be lighted when the gas is turned on. Above the opening is a second opening, 20, covered with mica, this openlng serving as a window through which the condition of the flame given by the burner can be seen withoutopening the oven door, 21. lt will now be seen that the serves to deflect the burning gases gently but positively so as to cause them to flow through the opening, 5, when the burner is lighted, with the result that when the hot gases enter the oven they are traveling parallel with the bottom of the oven.
Adapted to be detachably placed in the oven is a hollow oven plate'which may conveniently be made of a casting, 22, having at one end a liange, 23, adapted to rest upon the ledge or flange, 9, and a bottom member, 21, of asbestos or the like adapted to rest upon the bottom of the oven. At 110.
, `is removed, the cover plate, 32, is placed in v l'position and the damper, 35, is closed. .When it is desired to burn gas, the cover tending only part way from the edgeV provided with the flange toward the lopposite edge. The member, 22, may also be provided with downwardly-projecting lugs, 28 and 29, serving as spacers between the members 22 and 24:; while suitable bolts, 30, serve to connect the two members together into la single unit. The under side of the member, 22, for a considerable distance from the edge with the flange, 23, is preferably lined with asbestos, as indicated at 31.
An angle plate, 32, one member of which is short enough to pass through the opening, 5, in the oven while the other member is slightly larger, is adapted to be placed in the opening, 5, to cover the same when the oven is being heated with coal. To do this,
the detachable oven plate is removed, and
the cover plate is then inserted through the oven, the shorter member being passed through the opening, 5, as indicated on dotted lines in Fig. 3; whereupon, upon letting go of the cover'plate, it positions itself by gravity with its larger member completely closing the opening, 5.
The top wall of the oven is made hollow so as to provide a broad, shallow chamber, 33, extending from near the front of the oven to its back where; it communicates with the main draft flue, 34C. A damper, 35, controls communication between the chamber, 33, and the flue, 34. The chamber, 33, communicates with the interior of the oven through a series of perforations, 36, near the front of the chamber.
1When coal is being burned, the oven plate plate, 32, is removed, the oven plate is laid into the oven and the damper, 35, is opened. rlhe burner is then ignited through the opening, 19, and the flow of gas is regulated until the flame seen through the window, 20, `is of the character desired. The hot gases flow out of the combustion chamber, 8, and into the oven plate; the foot flange at the front preventing the gases from rising into the oven along the front thereof; and the short foot flange at the rear making it necessary for the gases to travel toward the middle of the oven, at the rear, before they are free. to rise. The hot gases are therefore carried to points remote from the burner before they rise into the oven above the oven plate, and they must then travel toward the front of the oven before they can pass into the combined outlet and heating chamber in the top wall of the oven. The result is that an even, uniform distribution of heat is obtained and, because of the long paths which injured through careless handling of 'the range. In accordance with my invention, I provide the bottom of the range with several short permanent legs, 21:0, sufficiently long to take the weight of the range when the main legs are taken off, but not long enough to be in the way at other times. This insures the gas piping and connections against injury when the main legs are taken off.
i While I have illustrated and described in detail only a single preferred form of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details thus illustrated and described; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements which come within the delinitions of my invention constituting the appended claims. j i
' I claim:
l. In a combined coal and gas range, an oven having anl elongated opening extending -through the wall into the ash pitv adjacent to the bottom ofthe oven, an outwardly nand downwardly curved wall extending from the top of said opening tothe bottom of the ash pit and forming a combustion chamber, the latter wall having a flange extending through the top of said-opening and projecting into the oven.
2. In a combined coal and gas-range, an oven having an elongated opening extending .through the wall into the ash-pit adjacent to the bottom of the oven,anout wardly and downwardlycurved wall extendingfrom the top of said opening to the bottom -of the ash pit and forming a combustion chamber, 'the latter Vwall having alange extending 'through the top of said `opening and 'projecting into the oven, a
burner inthe said combustion chamber, and an oven plate engaging with the aforesaid flange for directing the hot gases from said chamber alonO the bottomV of the oven.
3. The combination with a coal range, of a combustion chamber formed out of the lower corner of the ash pit adjacent to the joven, there being an openingy leading from the upper portion of the chamber into the oven just above the oven bottom, and an oven plate comprising a heat insulating member adapted to rest upon andeover the oven bottom and an upper member lying above the other member and adapted to extend from the wall of the oven just above said opening almost across the oven, and said chamber having therein a door leading to the ash pit andV large enough to permit the insertion and removal of the burner therethrough.
4. The combination with a coal range, of a combustion chamber formed out of the lower corner of the ash pit adjacent to the oven, there being an opening leading from the upper portion of the chamber into the oven just above the oven bottom, and an oven plate comprising a heat insulating member adapted to rest upon and cover the oven bottom and an upper member lying above the other member and adapted to extend from the wall of the oven just above said opening almost across the oven. j

The combination with a coal range, of a combustion chamber formed out of the lower corner of the ash pit adjacent to the oven, there being an opening leading from the upper portion of the chamber into the oven just above the oven bottom, and an oven plate comprising a heat insulating member adapted to rest upon and cover the oven bottom and an upper member lying above the other member and adapted to extend Copies of this patent may be obtained for iive cents each, by addressing Y Washington, D. 6. The combination with a coal range, ofa combustion chamber formed out of the lower corner of the ash pit adjacent to the oven, there being an opening leading from the upper portion of the chamber into the oven just above the oven bottom, and an oven plate comprising a heat insulating member adapted to rest upon and cover the oven bottom and an upper member lying above the other member and adapted to extend from the wall of the oven just above said opening almost across the oven, said upper member having an imperforate foot iange along the front edge and adapted to rest on the oven bottom, said upper member having also a similar foot iiange extending along the rear edge for a considerable distance from the edge next to said opening.
