rnoonss or BREAKING STEEL BARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 119., 1916.,
Application filed. April 26, 1916. Serial No. 93,775.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIERRE VICTOR LiioN BELLANGER, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Paris, France, have invented a new and useful Process of Breaking Steel Bars, of which the following is a specification. This invention is an improvement in or modification of that described in specifica-' tion No. 85,694 of Mar. 21, 1916, which relates to a physico-mechanical process of breaking steel bars.
It has been observed that the flame of the blow-pipe may be oxidizing, reducing or neutral. Whatever be its nature and the manner in which it acts from the chemical point of view, by its calorific action alone, it produces a slight notch in the metal, and owing to subsequent air cooling, produces in hardening steels an intense hardening effect all around the notch. Soft steels and iron are similarly affected: a complete change is effected in the structure of the iron (stabilization of the iron 4; at the ordinary temperature). The result of this'hardening is to produce in the metal great brittleness localized in the region of the notch, as well as considerable molecular stresses in the interior of the bar in the plane of the notch. A slight pressure or shock exerted at this place upon the bar is therefore suflicient to break the bar in the plane of the said stresses, which is normal to the longitudinal axis of the bar, provided that the flame of the blow pipe has been directed in a suitable manner.
The process is not limited to the use of a blow-pipe but can be successfully carried out by employing any means adapted to produce in an iron or steel bar by local heating an around its entire periphery.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a section through the bar after being notched by the flame of the blow-pipe. Fig. 2 illustrates the bar supported, and Fig. 3
shows the bar bent under the action of the breaking tool.
a designates the notches created by the flame of the blow-pipe.
b and 0 are two supports upon which the bar rests intermediate its ends, and d is the breaking or cutting tool which is guided against the bar at the side opposite to the notch a.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
A process of the character described for breaking metal bars, consisting in subjecting said bars to the action of a reducing flame at the point where the bar is to be broken for changing the consistency of the metal at this place, and finally subjecting the bar to the action of a breaking tool.
, In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PIERRE VICTOR Leon BELLANGER.
