Description

NOEL STATHAM, OF IBOONTON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO'INDUSTRIAL CHEMICAL COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
PAPER AND PROCESS OF MAKING THE SAME.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NOEL STATHAM, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Boonton, Morris county, New Jersey, llEWB made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to Paper and Processes of Making the Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates especially to paper comprising considerable proportions of light precipitated chalk or similar finely divided light calcium carbonate loading material which has been incorporated with the paper pulp before the paper is made therefrom.
Light precipitated chalk, such as is disclosed in the Statham Patent No. 1,178,962
of April 11, 1916, may be of an extremely light, finely divided character and may be so bulky as to have when dry a weight of no more than about 16.2 pounds per cubic foot.
: Such light precipitated chalk may with advantage be incorporated in high bulk, or for light weight papers, it being possible to incorporate any desired small proportion or even as much as 10 to 30 per cent. of this material with the paper pulp when the paper is manufactured without undesirably increasing the weight of the resulting standard thickness paper, which would then have an ash content as high as 10 to 30 per cent. The extremely light finely divided character of the material promotes its uniform distri bution throughout the paper pulp with which may be incorporated any suitable size, preferably of a neutral or alkaline character, and paper may be made in this way from sulfite or soda wood pulp or other paper pulp material; or if desired the main or entire sizing may be subsequently applied to the formed paper in the form of glue, starch 'or resin sizing as by the vat, tub or animal sizing process so as to secure any reasonable strength desired.
As an illustration a batch of such paper was made up with suflicient light precipitated chalk incorporatedin the paper pulp, so that the total "ash content was 14.3 per cent. A ream of this high bulk paper was 4% inches thick which was exactly the same thickness per ream as another sample of generally similar paper which was made up,

however, with a small amount of the usual clay loading material so that the ash content was 4.42 per cent.
Th1s invention has been disclosed with a number of illustrative materials, proportions, formulas, orders of steps and methods of preparation and use, to the details of which disclosure the invention is not of course to be limited, since What is claimed as new and what is deslred to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims:
1. The high bulk paper containing over twenty per cent. of light precipitated. chalk substantially uniformly incorporated therein.
2. The high bulk sized paper containing substantially uniformly incorporated therein a considerable proportion of finely divided light precipitated chalk which had when dry a weight of not more than about twenty pounds per cubic foot.
3. The high bulk paper containing over ten per cent. of light, finely divided calcium carbonate loading material incorporated throughout the body thereof.
4. The high bulk sized wood pulp paper containing over twenty per cent. of finely divided light precipitated chalk loading material having. when dry a weight of not more than about eighteen pounds per cubic foot and substantially uniformly incorporated throughout the paper pulp during the formation of the paper so that the weight of the finished paper of standard thickness is substantially unchanged by the loading.
5. The high bulk paper containing over twenty per cent. of finely divided light prestandard thickness is not considerably' information of the paper so that the Weight creased by the loading. of the finished paper of standard thickness 7 The highbulk sized Wood pulp paper is substantially unchanged by the loading. 10 containing over twenty per cent. of finely NOEL STAT 5. divided light precipitated chalk loading ma- Witnesses: terial and substantially uniformly incorpo- Y J. WRENCH, rated throughout the paper pulp during the HENRY E. GowARn.
