LINING Eon PAILs.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application mea Nvember 24,1915'. serial No. 63,293.5
Be it' known that I, GEORGE II. RIVES, a citizenof the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New f York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Linings for Pails, of
. which the following is a full, clear, and
exact specification. Y
This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used `interiorly of pails, and has forits object primarily to provide a lining designed to be employed interiorly of 'a'pail or llke'receptacle for receiving garbage and refuse to prevent the pail from being soiled,.and which is formed so as to be adjustedtovarious diameters to allow the lining to be removably applied to receptacles of dilferent sizes, the lining being made of paper, by it may be dispensed with when the receptacle is emptied of its contents. I
TheL invention consists essentially of a hollow body composed vof two interfitting vsections each having an approximately semicircular wall, or vertically disposedmember, and an integral substantially semi-circular bottom, or longitudinally disposed member, the bottom member of each sectionbeing slitted to provide two portions each preferably of substantially the shape of a quadoverlapping arrangement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a separate cover member also of paper, or other inexpensive mraterial, having an aperture therein whereby the cover may be detachably applied to occasion may require.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding 4parts in all. the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section taken through one form of -lining for pails embodying my invention, the pail being shown in dotted lines, partly in detail, and partly in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan of a lid of the pail formed to peror other inexpensive material where' the lid of a pail as interiorly mounted thereon. Fig. 3 is a view looking downwardly into' the body of the lining when its parts are assembled. Fig. 4 is a sectlon taken on thelin'e IV-IV of Fig. 1`, and Flg. 5 is a top view looking downwardly into one of the interfitting sections of the llning.
The device, or lining has a hollow body 10I -composed of two sections, as 11 and 12, whlch may be made of paper, or other comparatively inexpensive material so as to be dispensed with after being once used. The sections 11 and 12 are preferably similar in formation, and each Asection`has a wall, or vertically disposed member -13 of substantially a semi-circular shape. The wall mem- APatented Dec. 19, i916.`
circular in shape. Each of the bottom members 14 is transversely slitted, at 15, to provide two portions 16 and 17 each preferably of substantially the shape of 'a quadrant for being'adapted to be disposed in overlapping arrangement, as indicated in Figs.` 3, 4, 5, whereby the diameter of the bottom of the body maybe reduced when the sections 11 and 12 are assembled and applied interiorly of a receptacle, such as a garbage pail, as at 18, Fig. 1, having -a tapered wall.
On the upper edge ofthe wall member 13 of each vof the sections of the-body 10 may be a semi-circular ange 19, and both of these flanges are arranged lto overhang the exterior of the wall member so as to lap over the upper edge' of the wall of the'pail, In conjunction with 'the sectional body 10 of the lining, I mayfalso provide a cover member, as 20, adapted to be removably applied of the lid, as 21, of the pail, this lid being provided with a knob, or handle, 4.
. as 22, which is rotatably disposed through' van opening centrally of the lid, and on the mit the coverof the lining to be removably lower end of this handle is a clip preferably has a circular flat body part 24 which may be of a size to fit interiorly of the lid ofthe pail, and on the outer edge of this body part is a downwardly extending flange,` as 25,
- adapted to lay against the depending flange of the. lid of the pail, while centrally of the cover member is an elongated opening 26 for reception of the finger 23 vof the handle of the lid of the pail.
When the lining is applied to a garbage pail the larger semi-circular section of its body 10 is first tted in the body of the pail so as to be disposed against part of its wall and so that the bottom member 13 of this section will rest upon the bottom of the pail. lf required the two portions 16 and 17 of the bottom member 14: may be arranged to overla'p each other lso that the bottom member will conform with the size of part of the bottom of the pail, and the smaller semicircular section of the body of the lining is.
similarly fitted in the body of the pail at an opposed part to the first section. lf the circumference of,I the sections of the body of the lining when thus applied to the body of the pail is greater than the interior of the pail the smaller'section of the'body of the liningis arranged so that its edges will overlap the larger section, as illustrated, and the flanges 19 of the sections 13 lare arranged to overhang the upperedge of the body of the pail. When the cover member 20 is used on a pail it is applied on the underside of the lid, and the knob, or handle 22 is revolved so` that the finger 23 will be inserted through the opening 26 of the cover member. By
then rotatably moving the handle accordingly the linger 23 will engage a part of the cover member -adjacent toits opening, and
the cover member will be removably heldl to the lid of the pail so that the Harige 25 will overlap the flange of the body 10 of the lining, though in instances the cover member may be dispensed with. When the lining is applied to a pail in this manner garbage and other refuse may be received in the body 10 of the lining, and with the emptying of the contents of the pail the lining is also dispensed with, thereby preventing the pail from being soiled. Moreover, by making the lining in two intertting sections, as described, the device may be manufactured in uniform sizes, and adjustably applied to` pails of various diameters.
ln the foregoing description, l have embodied the preferredfform of my invention, but' l do not wish tofbe understood aslimiting myself thereto, as l am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages4 of this invention9 therefore l reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
Having thus vdescribed my invention, l claim' as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent2- y 1. ln a lining for receptacles, a hollow body composed of two sections each having a 'bottom member and one of 'the sections being larger than the other so that the sections will interit when assembled as well as permitting the lining to be adjusted to various diameters to t receptacles of diferent sizes, substantially as set forth and for theV purpose specified. j
2. ln a lining for receptacles, a hollow body composed of two sections each, with a substantially semi-circular wall member ferent sizes, substantially as set forth and for the purpose specified.
` 3. lln a lining for receptacles, a hollow body composed of two sections each with a vertically disposed substantially semi-circular wall member, and having a longitudinally disposed substantially 'semi circular bottom member, the bottom member of each section being slitted to provide two portions for being disposed in overlapping arrange- -ment, and one of the sections being larger than the other so that the sections will interit when assembled as well as permitting the lining to be adjusted to various diameters to fit receptacles of di'erent sizes, substantially as set forth and for the purpose specied.
4. ln a lining for receptacles, a hollow body composed of two sections each with a substantially semi-circular wall member having on its top edge an outwardly extending overhanging flange, and having on its lower-edge a bottom member, and one of the sections being larger than the other so ,that the sections will interfit when assembled as well as permitting the lining to be adjusted to various dia-meters to fit receptacles of different sizes, and a separateA cover member for the lining, formed so as to be removably applied to the lid'of the receptacle.`
5. ln a lining for receptacles, a hollow body composed of two sections each with a vertically disposedv substantially semi-circular wall member, and vhaving a longitudinally disposed substantially semi-circular bottom member, the bottom member of each section-being slitted to4 provide two portions for being disposed in overlapping arrangement, and one of the sections being larger than the other so that the sections will nterizo t when assembled as well as permitting the This specification ,'signed and witnessed lining to be adjusted to various diameters to this. twenty third da'y of November, A.
