Be it known that l, GEORGE P. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grovans, near Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Labeling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to labeling machines.
One object is to provide a bottle labeling machine embodying means whereby the bottles may be fed intermittently through a ma? chine, and effectively labeled during the intervals between the feeding steps.
Another object is to provide a bottle.
labeling machine to operate in unison with Another object resides in the provision of a bottle labeling machine embodying, among other' characteristics, means whereby bottles which are being fed through a machine for illing purposes intermittently or step by step, are actedupon during intervals of rest in the intermittent or step by step feed of the` bottles for the purpose of applying labels thereto. f
Another obj ect is to provide a bottle labeling machine in which a plurality of4 bottles may be fedvintermittentlyinto cooperative relation with the labeling machine and in which, while the inal labeling step is being performed on one bottle, another bottle is being supplied with adhesive substance, and a bottle which has been supplied with adhesive substance is having a label applied has been supplied with` adhesive substance y anda label is having its label subjected to moisture, so that at all times each bottle of each plurality thereof is beingacted upon to carry out the labeling operation.
A still further object is to provide a bot- Y tle labeling machine in which a plurality of labels may be fed intermittently into cooperative relation with the labeling machine,
and in which.v one bottle may be suppliedv with an adhesive substance, another bottle at the same time supplied with a label to which an adhesive substance was applied during a previous operation, and in which the label of 'another bottle which has been labeled in a prior operation is subjected to moisture, and in which a label which has been applied over the. adhesive material on one bottle and moistened in a' previous operation is sub- ]ected to a drying medium.
A still further obj ect is to provide a bottle labeling machine with a label magazine and a label aliixing device which cooperates with the magazine in combination with means to create alternately a vacuum or suction and a pressure whereby the label aiiixing device may take one label at a time from the magazine under the influence of vacuum or suc# tion and apply the label to a bottle which has been supplied -on one wall thereof with an adhesive substance, and from which label atlixing device the label may be released by air pressure passed through the label affixing device.
A still further object is to provide a bottle labeling machine embodying means whereby the bottles may be fed .intermittently through a machine and effectively labeled during the intervals 0f rest between the feeding steps, without danger of breaking the bottles or cupping or Acurling the labels, and without the necessity of subsequently wiping adhesive substance from the bottles or labels, and without the necessity of placing the labeled bottles in a drying room for drying purposes. With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully y described,villustrated in the accompanying drawlngs, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended,- it being understood that I various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor ldetails of construction, within the scope of the claims, may beresorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of the invention. I

lin carrying the present invention into practice, it will be understood that it is combined with a machine designed for filling, labeling, and corking bottles. The
'corking machineis embodied in a separate applicationfas is also the machine for filling the bottles. It is deemed unnecessary to illustrate and describe in detail in this case either the corking mechanism-,or the filling part of the machine, eXce-pt in so far as is necessaryv to show the present labeling'A device coupled up with the filling machine.
To these endsjust alluded to, there is illus-v tra-ted in the accompanying drawings a portion 20 of the framework of the filling machine, on which latter is supported in any suitable mannerra shelf 21 over which the |bottle a` Z), c, d, e, and f are fed., after they havebeen filled by the lling mechanism, (not shown) by means of pockets 22, secured in any suitable manner to a suitable chain belt or other feeding means 23, operated intermittently in any suitable manner.
The pockets `22 'are preferably open at their upper and lower ends so that the bot toms 0f the bottles slide along the shelf 21.
These pockets are preferably detachably connected to the'feeding means 23 in any suitable manner, so that pockets of various Sizes may be secured to the feeding means, and it will be understood that they maybe of any form other than that herein illustrated. Y
By virtue of the intermittent travel of the rfeeding means 23 all of the bottles carrled in the pockets come torest momentarily and lat the moment they come to rest, my iilnproved labeling mechanism comes into p ay.
At each end of the framework 2O there is a bracket 25 anda stop -strip 26 connects the outer ends of these brackets. The brackets may be supported by arms 27 and 28, or in other framework, in any suitable manner, bolts 29 being shown as piercing the frame 20 and the angular extensions 30 of the arms 27, bolts 31 being shown aspassing through the arms 28 and the brackets 25.,
Uprights 32 and 33 are supported on the brackets 25 in any suitable manner, and in the upper ends of these uprights 32 and 33 is journaleda rock shaft 34. An upright 35 is secured in any suitable manner on the framework v2O in the upper end of which is journaledy a stub shaft 36. A beam 37 connects the stub shaft 36 and the front elongated shaft 34 and braces the uprights.
A glue or other adhesive substance magazine A, a labeling magazine B, a water or g@ other moistening medium magazine C, and a heating device D, the latter for drying purposes, are arranged in spaced relation, and each magazine has a bearing 38 by which vit is keyed to and swings with the g5 rock shaft 34 mounted in the aforesaid front standards 32 and 33. These magazines and the heating device Yare of particular construction and will be described in detail hereinafter. rllhey are all connected together by means of a vsuitable connection 39, so that they may be swung together into and out of operative feeding positions.
f A common means is provided to swing the magazines A, B, and C and the heating device D into and out of operative positions, and this particular meansmay be varied. As shown, there is mounted on the aforesaidvstub shaft 36 a disk 40, to which a cam operated lever 4l may be eccentrically conf neoted at 42. rllhis lever 41 is connected at its lower end by a ca-m mechanism 22 to the drive shaft 42, which latter operates the bottle feeding means 23 intermittently through the gear connection 23 and shaft @5 23a. A pitman 43 is eccentrically connected at 44 to the disk 40 'at one end., and at its opposite end pivotally connected at 45 to an arm 46 keyed to the aforesaid rock shaft 34 intermediate the ends of the latter and lo provided with a link 48 pivotally connected at 49 to alink 50 pivoted at 5l on the aforesaid beam 37. 1
Coperating with the magazines A, B, and C and the heating device D are swing 1125 ing arms E, F, G, and H respectively, which are designed to contact alternately with the respective magazines and heating device and with the respective bottles, the bottles being' in cooperative relation to the magazines and zo the-heating dev-ice when the latter are in normal Vertical positions and in cooperative relation with the bottles when the magazines are in inoperative or inclined positions. y

This shaft 52 is hol low to provide an air duct from which air may be sucked and through which it may be forced by means of a suitable pump I, which is preferably, although not necessarily, in the form of a diaphragm pump, including a diaphragm chamber 53 and a diaphragm 54, operable by a shaft 55 connected up with any suitable mechanism (not shown) for actuating the same. Said shafty 55 may have a guiding stem 55 if desired. The hollow shaft 52 may be provided with a suitable air relief valve 56.
The swinging arms F, G and' H are connected up with the hollow shaft by means of suitable flexible tubular connections 57, 58 and 59 respectively. A stub shaft 60 isjournaled in any suitable manner in the arms 27 and 28 or any other suitablev part of the frameworkof the machine, and on this stub shaft 60 is mounted an arm 61 carrying a segmental gear 62 adapted to mesh'with a gear 63 on the' hollow'shaft 52.
.This arm 61 has an extension 64 projecting l over the main drive shaft 42 into coperative relation with the cam mechanism 22',
so as to rock the segmental gear 62 in opposite directions, which, by virtue of vthe meshing relation of the segmental gear 62 with the gear 63 of the shaft 52, causes said shaft to rock and in its rocking movement swing the arms E, F, G, and H, whichcoperate with the magazines A, B, C, and theheating device D respectively into and out of coperative relationv with the respective bottles.
As has been stated, the swinging arms E, F, Gand H cannot be swung to coperative relation with the bottlesuntil the ma azines A, B, and C and the heating device D have been swung outward to inoperative Nor can the magazines and the heating device be swung outwardly until the swinging arms have been lowered slightly from tight engagement with the lower ends of the same. Thereafter, just as the bottles" come to rest.during the intermittent feed thereof, the notch 64 in the arm extension 64 receives the cam lug -64a and causes' the segmental gear 62 to rock slightly. This motion lowers the arms and renders the magazines and the heating device free to swing outwardly, because the outer e'ndsof-` disk 40, which causes a rearward movement of the pitmanconnection 43. This pitman connection "43, invv its rearward movement, draws the arm 46 rearwardly .of the machine, causing rocking movement of the shaft 34 and a consequent outward swing of the magazines and the heating device. Upon the outward swing ofthe magazines and the heating device, the continued/rotary tion of the cam mechanism 22 causes the cam arm 64C, disposed under the arm'extension 64, to raise the latter, lifting the recess 64 from overfthe cam lug 64a and rocking,
the segment 62, causing the arms E, F, Gr and H to swing into contact with the respective bottles. The connectionsbetween the cam lever 41 and the arm extensions 64 with the main drive shaft of the filling mechanism are sofmade and timed that prior to movement of the bottle feeding means, after the interval of rest incident to the intermittent feed, the magazines and the heating device swinging inwardly and the swinging arms E, F, G and H swing tubular formation, carrying at its lower end a collar 66 having screw threaded connection 67. with .the body of the magazine. This collar 66 is preferably composed of metal and lhas screw threaded sockets 68.y
Against this collar is disposed an .annular plate 69 which 'is preferably of steel and slotted to permit the adhesive material tomeans of suitable screw threaded fastenings 73 having working'fit in the aforesaid screw threaded sockets 68 of the collar 66.
The plate 72 is provided -with anopen mouth 74 adapted to take or receive tightly A metallicplate 72 the pad -7 5 of the swinging adhesive applyf ing arm E, and through which open mouth 74 the adhesive substance is .applied to said pad ,75v of the swinging arm E. yThe pad 75 may be secured to the head 75" of the arm 'Eby fastenings,y and the flow of adhesive material may be regulated by means of a suitable valve 76.
The swinging adhesive applyingarm pad izo 75 is preferablyconvex in cross section and composed preferably of rubber made up after the fashion of the pad 103 of the arm G, having a marginal rib 77 andspaced longitudinal ribs 78. It is formed convex so as to take `a supply of adhesive material from the magazine A of an area `slight-ly less than the width of the label B to be that even though the rubber pad expands or spreads in its contact with the bottle, the adhesive substance will not be wasted or forced out from between the bottle and the label and subsequently gum the lithographed face of the label.
It will thus be understood that the pad 75, when in its normal position under the adhesive magazine A, is thrown downwardly slightly prior to the swinging arm E and itspad is thenswung to coperative relation -with the bottle, the pad carrying with it the adhesive material to be .applied to a paneled or other face of the bottle Z).
To prevent breakage of bottles, it is preferred that the swinging arm E has not only a soft lyieldable pad, but also has a flexible joint 80, which is normally maintained broken by means of a suitable spring 81 with the result that the pad 7 5 yieldably engages the bottle. As a matter of fact,` it may be stated at this point that each of the swinging arms E, F, G andH is formed alike as regards this breakable joint, all for the same purpose of providing for yieldable pressure of the pads of the swinging arms on the bottles. These breakable spring tensioned joints have also another function, yin that they provide for .a yieldable engagement of all of the pads and the heating device arm with the mouths of the respective magazines and the heating device, so as to provide for proper connection of these parts when in cooperative relation.
rl`he label magazine B is preferably rectangular in cross section, and of a size to permitnfree movement of the labels therein. At its lower end it hasa plurality of yieldable fingers 82, which are designed to prevent accidental displacement of the labels through the discharge end or mouth of the magazine. The labels are preferably disposed in the magazine B with their lithographed faces downward, and if desired, a weighted Jfollower 83 may be disposed on top of the labels.
A water chamber 84 is preferably secured to the magazine B by means of suitable brackets 85, and slidable in the latter. This water chamber carries at its lower end a wiper 86 of fabric or other suitable material, and is caused to slide in the brackets by means of a pitman connection 87 pivotally connected to an arm 88 projecting from the aforesaid link 50. This water chamber 84 is supplied with water, preferably from the moistening magazine C, by means of a suitable flexible or other pipe connection 89. The chamber 84 gradually rises to clear the stop strip 26 as the label magazine B moves to its outer inclined position and lowers as the label magazine B is thrown to its inward vertical position so as to wipe over the pad 9() of the"`swinging label afiixing `arm F and slightly meisten the same to facilitate taking labels from the label niagahas a marginal rib and a rib 96 connecting the marginal rib 95 intermediate the ends of the pad and dividing the pad into two sections, so that if one section did not effectively hold the label on the pad, it would not interfere with holding action on the label by the other section. Cn opposite sides of the rib 96 are short rods 97, arranged in spaced relation and whose ends are not connected with the sides of the pad. Between lthe ribs 97 are formed apertures 98 which have communication with thevalve chamber 91 in the arm F through the slot 94 in the head-plate 93, whereby, incident to suction through the hollow shaft 52, the tube 57,- and the valve chamber 91, one label at a time may be sucked out of the mouth of the label magazine, the pad 90 being notched at its sides and ends so as to take the aforesaid spring elements 82 arranged at the mouth of the label magazine. v'.lhe suction through the hollow shaft 52, the pipe 57, and the valve chamber 91 holds the extracted label on the pad 90, so that as the swinging arm F moves upwardly it may retain the label and apply it' to the bottle c, to which, it will be understood, the preceding swinging arm E has applied-the adhesive material. As the label is applied to-the adhesive material on the bottle, the pump l is operated in the opposite direction and causes air pressure to release the label from the pad 90, leaving the label on the bottle with its lithographed' face outward. rlhe ribs and intervening spaces between the ribs on the working face `of the pad 90 prevent wrinkling or cupping of the labels.
lit will now be understood that by the time. a bottle reaches the point opposite the moistening magazine C, it hasbeen supplied with adhesive material and also with a label, and now the outer face ofthe label is moistened as a means to prevent cupping or curling of the label. The moistening medium is preferably water and is carried in the water magazine C and supplied through the lower end or mouth of the magazine C to the swinging arm G in the same manner that the adhesive material is supplied by the magazine A to the swinging arm F. 'lhe lower end or mouth of the magazine C is formed substantially like the lower end or mouth of the adhesive magazine A..
The swinging moisture arm Cr is provided with a cavity forming a valve chamber 99, with which connects the aforesaid tube 58 leading from the hollow shaft 52. The ball valve 100 is disposed in the valve chamber 99 to prevent the flow of waterthrough the tube 57 into the hollow shaft.
Thel head 101 of the moisture applying larm is provided with an opening 102, and
on this head 101 is secured in any suitable manner a pad 103, preferably of the same form as the pad 91 carried by the swinging adhesive applying arm E, the only difference from the chamber 99 through the connection 57 into the hollow shaft 52, and yet permit unseating of the valve 100, so that moisture or water in said .chamber 99 may be forced under pressure by the pump 1 into and through the pad 102 to effectively moisten the label which has been applied to the bottle by virtue of the steps hereinbefore described. Moistening of the label in this way prevents curling, wrinkling, or cupping of the label.
v When a bottle has reached a point opposite the heating device D, it will be understood that it has had adhesive material applied thereto and also a label which has been moistened.
The part D of the heating device is hollow and has an air inlet opening D and incloses a resistance coil 105 which is connected up in any suitable manner with an electric light current socket (not shown). The lower end of the part D is flared to provide a mouth 106 adapted to receive the head 107 of the swinging arm an electric terminal 108 at its lower end and insulated therefrom and adaptedvto be received by the terminal composed of the spaced elements 109, carried by`and insulated from vthe swinging arm H, when the swinging arm H and the part D of the heating device come into coperative relation. The head 107 of the arm H has apertures 110 which lead into a chamber 111 formed at the outerend of the/swinging arm H, and in which is located .a resistance coil 112, so that when the swinging larm H is brought into coperative relation with the part D of the .electric heating device, designed for drying purposes, the heat from the resistance coils 105 and 112 isdrawn by suction through the shaft 52 and the pipe 59 into a chamber 113 in the arm H.
At the brealable' joint connection in the H. The part D has 'has been ,arm H there is located a valve'114 which is opened when the breakable joint is closed, and which is closed when the arm is in 'cooperative relation with the part D, so that the heated air passing into the chamberV 113 passes through the valve 114 into the chamber 115 of the arm H, where it is trapped.
When the part D of the heating device swings away from the arm H, the breakable joint inthe latter spreads or separates, with the result that the valve 114 closes, trapping the heated air in the chamber 115 of the arm. When the arm E swings to its vertical position in contact with the label on the bottle, the pump I is causing a pressure to flow through thev hollow shaft 52 and by virtue of the connection 59 vbetween said hollow shaft 52 and the chamber 115, the heated air trapped in the chamber 115 is forced through the open valve 114 and through the chambers '113 and 111 and through the apertures 110 into contact with the moistened label on the bottle to dry the latter, the breakable joint being closed when the head 107 of the arm H engages the label, thereby opening said valve 114 and permitting the pressure to force the heated airagainst the label on the respective bottle.
It will now be understood that if my im-l ,.proved labeling machine is applied 'to a bottlelling machine, that the bottles are fed preferably step by step by the feeding means 23 over the shelf 21 and that this feeding means preferably includes pockets in which the bottles are fed in spaced relation to one another, one bottle in each pocket. It will be further understood that the *bottlesl are operated upon during intervals of rest between the step movements .of the feeding means. Any other suitable supporting means for the bottles may be employed, and objects other than bottles may be labeled by .my improved machine.
For purposes of illustration, there is shown a plurality of six bottles a., b, c, d, e and f. It will be assumed that the bottle f labeled and that the bottle a has not yet come into coperative relation with the labeling machine, and that the bottles b, c, ai, and e are in coperative relation to the labeling machine and the feeding means is at rest. At this point of rest in the feeding means ythe bottle b will be supplied with adhesive material by the adhesive applying arm E, the bottle c, which has been supplied' with adhesive material during the last interval of rest of the feeding means, being in position to receive a label applied thereto by the label applying arm F. The bottle d has been supplied with adhesive material and also with a label by the respective arms E and F, and is now at a lpoint of rest for a third time lopposite the labeling machine and in Aposition tobe moistened and is moistened by the moisture applying arm- G at the same time that the adhesive material and a label are applied to the respective bottles b and c. rlhe bottle which has had adhesive material and a label applied thereto and which has been moistened by the moistening arm 5G in successive order during three prior intervals of rest of the feeding means, is, on the fourth time of rest of the feeding means, brought into position for coperation with the heating device D, when the heated air vtrapped in the chamber of the arm H is forced under pressure through the apertures 110 in the head 107 of the arm H against the label, efectually drying the label and obviating the necessity of taking the labeled bottle to a drying room.
With the explanation of operation immediately foregoing, when considered in connectiony with the foregoing detailed description and operation of the various parts of the machine, it is thought entirely unnecessary to enter further into detail With regard to the operation of the machine.
'What is claimed is 1. ln a bottle labeling machine, a shelf for supporting a plurality of bottles, means mounted above the shelf to drag the bottles in upright position along on` the shelf, step by step, means for applying adhesive material to one bottle at one step in the operation of the feeding means, and means operablev at the next step in the operation of the feeding means for simultaneously applying a label to the bottle to which adhesive material has been applied in` the previous step and also applying adhesive material to another bottle.
2. ln a bottle labeling machine, means for supporting a plurality ofbottles, means for`v feeding the bottles step by step, means for applying adhesive material to one bottle at one step in the operation of the feeding means, means operable at the next step in the operation of the feeding means for simultaneously applying a label to the bottle to which adhesive material has been applied in the previous step and also applying adhesive material to another bottle, and means for moistening the label applied to the bottle.
3. ln a bottle labeling machine, means for supporting a plurality of bottles, means for feeding the bottles step'r by step, means for applying adhesive material to one bottle at one step in the operation of the feeding means, means operable at the next step in the operation of the feeding means for simultaneously applying a label to the bottle to Which adhesive material has been applied in the previous step and also applying adhesive material to another bottle, means for moistening the label applied to the bottle, and means for drying the moistened label.
