Be it known that I, J AGOB A TOSSOUNIAN, a subject of the Sultan of Turkey, residing at, Philadelphia, phia and State of Pennsylvania, have vented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of metallic ties for. railway rails.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to construct a metallic tie of a simple design which, when arranged in the roadbed, will be self-sustained, that is will so engage with the roadbed as to prevent the movement of the tie in any direction except in a limited vertical direction.
It is also my purpose to construct a me tallic tie having a hollow substantially rectangular body member and having its ends widened whereby to offer a greater contacting surface to the roadbed so as to insure the proper arrangement of the tie thereon against movement in any direction when embedded in the said roadbed and to further embed in the roadbed blocks or piles arranged to be received by the widened ends of the tie, each of the said blocks having a depression to receive one end of a helical spring, the other end of the said spring contacting with the upper portion of the tie, whereby a desired amount of resiliency will be afforded by the tie to the rolling stock passing over the rails secured to the tie.
It is a still further object of the invention to produce a metallic tie which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity, cheapness and thorough efliciency. 1
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

My improved metallic tie may be cast or molded to produce a flattop surface 1 distance from its ends, is widened to its said ends but being inclined outwardly from its edges to its ends as clearly disclosed in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings. The widened angular portionsv at the ends of the ties are indicated by the numerals 2, and the outer edges of the said angular portions are arranged at a right angleto the body of the tie proper. The top,
as well as its widened portions 2 are formed with a continuous flange 3 which, of course, is downturned and which is inclined outwardly from thesaid top as clearly disclosed in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. The tie, at a suitable distance from the ends thereof, is provided upon its top with inturned members 4L that are in staggered relation to each other and which are formed with threaded bores to receive the threaded shanks 5 of headed members 6 and the heads of these members 6 contact with and partially overlie the base flanges of the rails 7.
In the roadbed, I embed suitable blocks 8 which may be of any desired material, preferably reinforced concrete or the like, the said blocks being in the nature of piers having their upper flat surfaces disposed a slight distance above the upper surface of the roadbed proper and eachof the blocks 8 has its said upper surface centrally provided with a rounded depression or pocket 9 to receive one end of a spring 10, the opposite end of each of said springs 10 encircling a lug 11 provided upon the upper plate 1 of the tie. It will be noted that the blocks 8 and the springs 10- are disposed below the widened portions 2 of the top platel, and that the said blocks are inclosed by the flange of the tie. The angular flange 3 is adapted to have the roadbed tamped there around and the enlarged or widened portions of the flange formed with the widened portions of the top 2 and the angular arrangement or disposition thereof when engaged by the tamped roadbed will effectively prevent the movement of the tie longitudiand the peculiar arrangement of the flange upon the body of the tie as well as upon the ends of the said-tie. will efi'ectively I T TES 1 I Patented nee-.19, 1916. In a railroad construction, blocks embedded in the roadbed and having their upper faces provided with pockets, a hollow tie arranged over the blocks and having its outer surface engaged by the roadbed, lugs depending from the top plate of the tie disposed over the openings in the blocks, and spring members having one end within the openings and the other end surrounding the lugs.
