Be it known that. I, JoseI-H V. HULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Processes for Sealing, of
which the following is a specification.
This in vent-ion relates to a method of forming closures which are applied to containers in which are to be sealed foodstufi's and the like, and has particular reference to a closure of the side sealing type which usually includes a metallic closure having an annular bending in which a compressible gasket is located, the heading and gasket being compressed by suitable means against the side wall of the container to form a seal. The application is a divisional one, being formed from my co-pending a )plication Serial No. 682,051, issued March 30, 1915, ps Patent No. 1,134,065. one object oi, the invention is to provide a more eflicient method of applying closures to containers forwthe packing and preservation of foodstufl's a method in which the closure may be applied quickly to the containcr without causing breakage of the latter, in which the closure will offer a. minimum resistance. to the sealing operation, and in which the closure will maintain a hermetic seal for a. long period of time; and still another object is to provide a method of scaling which will not unduly strain or break the lacquer upon the closure, or cause the closure to present a wrinkled appearance.
Referring to the drawings: The figure is a sectional. elevation of the scaling mechanism disclosed in my co-pcnding applica tion, Serial No. 682,051 and illustrates my improved scaling mcihod.
The glass or rigid wall container is indicated at [0; the closure of metal is shown at 11 and is equipped with a heading which is indicated at l2, l3 and 14. Within the bcadiug is a gasket 15 Formed of rubber or othcr suitable wn'nposition. In the former method of scaling the closure to the contain'cr, as shown in my Patent No. 874,201 of l')cccmber 17, 1907, the top and bottom walls 12 and 14 of the heading wcre deformed, the wall 13 hding under compression at the same time, and the gasket material 15 was squeezed latcrallv against the glass wall of altcrcd wilhout departing the container 10 to effect the seal. In the practice of this method, it has been found that considerable power is re hired to effect the seal, the metal beadingo the cap often becomes wrinkled in radial lines, and the protective coating of lacquer is injured. Apparently this is due to the lack of compressibility of the metal of the heading as compared with the gasket. When the bead mg is compressed, the cross-sectional area is reduced. The rubber-adapts itself readily to the change, but the metal of the beading tends to maintain the same siiperficial area that it had before the compression.
liy my improved method I provide a groove in the heading adapted to receive the excess metal due to the reduction in size of the beading. The arrangement provides for subjecting the entire heading to compression, reducing the cross-sectional area of the beading with relation to the gasket, without at the same time requiring or forcing any substantial reduction in the perimeter dimension of the heading. Under this method of the scaling, the excess metal or a substantial part of it is taken up by or flows into the groove as the pressure of the dies is applied, the beading is reduced as desired without causing any wrinkling or buckling of the metal such as occurs in sealing in the manncr previously practised, and in addition thc skin of lacqucr upon the metal is not broken or seriously injurcd.
As sho'wnin the view, the groove is formed in the present instance at 20 in the upper wall 12 of the lwading, and the anvil 21 is equipped with an annular projection 22 by which thc groove may be formed. In the machine shown as disclosing the process, the anvil 21 is stationary, the sectional jaws 23 are drawn upward by suitabh means, com pressing or deforming the beading between lhc lugs 24 on the jaws 23 and the anvil 21.
\Vhilc the groove is shown upon the upper surface ol the bcading, it is obvious that it may be locatcd at any desired place in the bcading and porl'orm thc same function; also that thc form of hcading itself may be from the spirit and scope of the invention. The invention also is not limited to the particular manner of forming thc groove which is shown.
