CARRIER FOR DRAFT-GEAR YOKES.
Patented 1%), 11916.
Application filed hi'ay 29, 1916. Serial 21o. "100,504.
To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that l, Pnnor B. CAMP, a citizen at the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and umful Improvements in Carriers for Draft-Gear Yokes, of which the following is aspecilication, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings,- forming a part thereof.
.The invention relates to improvements in carriers for the yoke or coupler extension of a draft gear for railway cars, of the type shown in my copending application.
The object of the invention is to simplify and cheapen the construction, while securing the added strength of wrought metal in the portion of the device which is called upon to sustain the weight of the gear.
it consists in a. supporting member in the form of a strap, adapted to be attached to the draft sills or plates of a railway car, and extend across the space occupied by the gear, together with a roller running upon the strap, and a retainer and guide for the roller attached to the upper face of the strap. r
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detail transverse vertical sectional view through. the draft sills or plates of a railway car, the carrier. being shown in elevation; Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view, partly in elevation, of the draft mechanism of a car, the carrier being shown in cross-section; and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the carrier detached from are represented at 10, 11, and the coupler extension, here shown in the formof a yoke, at 12. A strap 13, which may be of vr ught metal, is attached to and below the sills or plates 10, 11, by anysuitable means. As shown,.these sills or plates are provided with outstanding foot flanges 14c, 15, and
the strap 13 is applied to the lower faces of these flanges and is provided at its ends with upturned gibs 16, 17, engaging the outer margins thereof. The strap is} secured to the flanges by means of bolts, 18, 19.
As shown, the middle portion of the strap 13 is offset downwardly, the bottom plane of the yoke 12 being shown as substantially in the plane of the lower faces of the flanges 14:, 15.
' A. roller 20 rides upon the strap 13, and supports the yoke or coupler extension 12, the strap being of such width as to permit suiiicient movement of the roller to provide for the maximum range of movement of the coupler extension in service.
In order to secure the roller 20 in place,
a cage or frame, generally designated by the numeral 21, is secured to the upper face of the strap 13 by any suitable means, rivets 22, 23, being here shown for this purpose. The frame 21 is rectangular in form, its side . walls 24, 25, serving as guides for the roller,
and itsend walls 26, 27, limiting the move ment thereof. Preferably the frame is also provided with upstanding flanges .28, 29, parallel with the line oi. draft and serving to. limit the lateral movement of the coupler extension.
The roller 20 is held within the frame when the coupler extension is not in place by means of a rod 30, crossing the chamber within which the roller is housed, and being anchored in the end walls 26, 27, of the frame, the roller being provided with a circumferential channel 31 r'or its accommodation.
I claim as my invention 1. A carrier for a coupler extension comprising, in combination, a strap adapted for attachment to the draft irons of a car, a roller mounted on the strap and movable transversely thereof, and a frame attached to the strap for guiding and limiting the movement of the roller.
2. A carrier for a coupler extension comprising, in, combination, a strap adapted for attachment to the draft irons of a car, a roller mounted on the strap and movable transversely thereof, and a frame attached to the strap for guiding and limiting the. movement of the roller and having upstanding lateral flanges for guiding the coupler extension.
