Myrinvention relates to improvements in upright boilers, the object of the invention being to provide a boilerV of an improved con-struction embodying a plurality of upright or vertically positioned boiler units all connected to a cross drum at the top of the boiler', and having improved means for regulating the flow of smokeV and gases to utilize the 4full heat units of the fuel.

lVith these and 4other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of constructionV and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In constructing my improved boiler, I provide a cross drum 1 located at the top of the boiler, and connected with any desired number of boiler units 2 located in. avertical or upright position with the `boiler units at both sides of the drum, and parallel `to each other at both sides of the drum, using as many of such units as desired.;

By reference particularly to Fig. 1, it will be noted that the boiler units at opposite sides of the drum are `disposed at an angle to each other, so that a somewhat triangular chamber 8 is formed between the boiler' units in which the tubes 9 of a pre-heater 10 are positioned. The headers 11 0f the pre- `heater 10 are located outside of the walls 12 of the boiler furnace structure or elsewhere as desired, but the water tubes 9 extend through the triangular chamber 8 and receive the direct heat from the products of combustion `as will be hereinafter explained. The lower ends of the boiler units are supported on walls 13, and combustion chambers lfare located at opposite sides of the boiler, and supply the necessary products of combustion. The boiler units 2 are provided with battles 14 yand 16 which compel the smoke and gases from the combustion chambers 15 to circulate through the boiler units as indicated by the'arrows. Between the pairs of boiler units at both sides of the drum 1, relatively narrow chambers 17 are formed by tile walls 18 supported between the tubes of the boiler units, and extending to the walls 12 of the furnace structure. these chambers 17, super-heaters 19 project, said super-heaters being'V supported at the top of the furnace structure, and projecting into the chamber as shown clearly in Fig. 2. It will be noted that my improved vertical type of boiler employs my cross drum boiler unit as disclosed in my application for patent executed on even date herewith, and while I have not described any particular manner of supporting the boiler units, it is to be understood that they will be supported in anyapproved manner, and preferably are hung Yfrom overhead supports in the usual accepted manner.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A boiler, comprising a drum, a plurality of pairs of boiler units located at opposite sides of the drum and communicating with the drum, chambers formed between the pairs of boiler units, super-heaters in said chambers, and means for controlling the flow of smoke and gases through said chambers, substantially as described.
2. In a boiler, the combination with a cross drum located at the top of the boiler, of a plurality of pairs of boiler units located at opposite sides of the drum, supported in an upright position and supporting the drum between them, said boiler units forming a chamber .belowthe drum and forming otherV chambers between each pair of-bo-iler units, a pre-heater supported in the first-mentioned chamber, and super-heaters in the 'last-mentioned chambers, substantially as described. 3. In a boiler, the combination with a cross drum located at the top of the boiler, of a plurality of pairs of boiler units located at opposite sides ofthe drum, supported in an 'upright position and supporting the drum between them, said boiler units forming a chamberbelow 'the drum and forming 70 other chambers between each pair., of boiler units, a. pre-heater projecting through the first-mentioned chamber and super-heaters supported on top of the boiler structure and projecting into the last-mentioned chambers, substantially as described. 4. In aboiler, the combination with a cross drum located at thetop of the boiler, of a plurality of pairs` of 4boiler units located at opposite sides of the drum, supported in anupright position and. supporting the drum between them, said boiler units forming a chamber below the drum and forming other chambers between each pair of boiler units, a pre-heater supported in the first-mentioned chamber, and superheaters inthe last-mentioned chambers, and dampers controlling the flowl of smoke and gases through the last-mentioned'chambers, substantially as described.
5. In a boiler, thev combination with a cross drum located at the top of the boiler, Y of Va plurality 'of pairs of boilerfunits located at opposite sides ofthe drum, supported in an upright position and supporting the drum between them, said boiler units forming a chamber below theV drum vand forming other chambersbetween eachpair of boiler units, a pre-heater projecting through the first-mentioned chamber, superheaters on top of the boiler structure and projecting into the last-mentioned chambers, and dampers controlling the How of smoke and gases through the last-mentioned chambers, substantially as described.
