Description

J. R. PILE.
PLOW ATTACHMENT FOR ROAD GRADERS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-2i T916- Pat nted M0. 12, 1915.
. "tlllw sas h PLOW ATTACHMENT FOR ROAD-GRADERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 19116.
Application filed August 2, 1916. Serial No. 112,744.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. PILE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owensboro, in the county of Davies, State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Plow Attachment for Road-Graders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved plow attachment, more especially adapted for use in connection with the road grading and ditching machines, particularly of the type or kind set forth, shown and claimed in the patent to John R. Pile of February 29, 1916, Patent Number 1,173,681, whereby in using this kind of grading and ditching machine,
- one of the plow beams may be detached, and
a trench plow mold board applied, so that a trench or ditch may be excavated for receiving water pipes, such as terra cotta and like pipes on the side of the road.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plow beam and its necessary usual attachments whereby the same with the use of a trench plow mold board, may be quickly adapted for excavating a trench, or quickly applied to a road grading machine.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for adjusting the trench plow mold board.
In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
in the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear part of a plow beam, showing the trench mold board and the supporting wheel therefor. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line H of Fig. 1.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the rear portion of a plow beam, which curves to extend downwardly to form a standard 11, the forward edge of which is provided with a pair of downwardly extending lugs 12 and 13. A trench plow mold board 14: of the shape shown is provided, and secured upon its rear face is a metallic strap 15 having upper and lower rearwardly extending angular ends 16 having apertures 17 to receive the downwardly extending portions of the lugs 12 and 13, through which lugs the usual form of cotter pins 18 are illserted, to hold the angular ends 16 in place. The trench plow mold board, as will be noted, is of such shape as may be used for excavating suitable trenches or ditches for receiving terra cotta and similar pipes. The upper corners of the trench plow mold board are provided with laterally and rearwardly curved portions 19, the rear faces of which are provided with eyes 20, to be engaged by the eyes 21 of the rods 22. Secured by suit able rivets or bolts 23 to the opposite faces of the lower end of the standard 11 of the plow beam are the forward angular ends 2-1- of the plates 25. the rearwardly extending portions of which are spaced apart sufficiently to receive a supporting wheel 26, which is mounted upon an axle or shaft 27. This shaft 27 is provided with reduced ends 28, on which the lower ends of the handles 29 are arranged. These handles are braced by the rods 30, which connect the handles and the standard 11 of the plow beam. Also mounted upon the reduced ends 28 of the shaft or axle are sleeves 31, there being nuts 32 threaded upon the reduced ends, to hold the handles and the sleeves 31 in place. However, the sleeves 31 have additional sleeves 33 extending at right angles to the sleeves 31, through which sleeves 33 the lower ends of the rods 22 extend, and on the lower rear extremities of said rods 22 suitable nuts 34 are threaded, whereby upon adjustment of the nuts, the rods 22 may be adjusted, so as to change the angle of the trench plow mold board, so that in excavating the trenclnparticularly at the first stages thereof, the dirt will tend to be thrown to one side. The sleeves 33 are swiveled at 33 to the sleeves 31.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a plow attachment of the kind set forth, the combination of a plow beam havmg a downwardly extending standard at the rear and a supporting wheel carried by the standard, of a trench plow mold board having a metallic strap upon its rear face having upper and lower rearwardly extending right angle ears provided with apertures, the forward edge of the standard having a pair of forwardly and downwardly extending lugs the downwardly extending portions of which pass through the apertures of the ears, means carried by the lugs to hold the ears thereon, a support for the wheel, an axle right angle ears provided with apertures, the
forward edge of the standard having a p air of forwardly and downwardly extending lugs the downwardly extending portions of which pass through the apertures of the ears, means carried by the lugs to hold the ears thereon, a support forthe wheel, an axle mounted in name to this specification in the presence of .2
two subscribing witnesses.
