Specification of Letters latent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR GRAHAM FRANCE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 1 Adam street, Adelphi, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Printing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing apparatus of the kind suitable for printing advertisements or other matter upon the tape used by shop-keepers for tying up packages and designed for automatic operation as the tape is withdrawn by hand for use from time to time from the immediate supply in or on the apparatus.
The main object of the said invention is to make provision whereby the printing type or the like may be readily changed or rearranged by the shop-keeper or his assistants in order to vary the advertisements or other matter to be printed on the tape from time to time as desired but other objects of the said invention are to render the inking of the type or the like more uniform and reliable than in apparatus of the kind referred to as heretofore proposed, to provide means to obviate any danger of the tape not being properly fed into the printing apparatus and generally to produce a simple efficient and convenient apparatus not liable to get out of order and easy to manipulate.
According to the said invention, the type wheel or carrier is provided with resilient releasable clamping means for temporarily securing single letter type (that is, type, each body of which carries a single letter), whereby some of the type may be changed or rearranged without necessarily releasing the whole of the type, and means are provided whereby the type carrier may be readily removed from the apparatus for the purpose.
Other valuable features of the invention are that provision is made for the suspension of the apparatus above the place where the tape is to be used,,with freedom for angular movement of the apparatus, and provision is made for proper supply of the tape to the type carrier, notwithstanding variations of'the part where the tape leaves the supply reel, and a specially eflfective and simple inking roller is provided.
The said invention is hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the said invention.
Figures 1 and 2 are elevations at right angles to one another of the complete apparatus in the position in which it is disposed for use; Fig. 3 is a face view of the printing mechanism contained in the lower part of the apparatus when the closure thereof is opened; Fig. 4: is a section taken on the line A-A Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section (drawn to a larger scale) of the inking roller; Fig. 6 is a face view of the same with its cover removed also drawn to a larger scale and Fig. 7 is a horizontal section of the impression roller drawn to a larger scale than Fig. 3.
In the following description the parts of the said figures are referred to by the letters marked thereon the same letters of reference indicating the same parts in the several figures of the drawings.
a is the containing case for the printing mechanism which case is drum shaped and provided with side arms a a by which it may be suspended from a shop ceiling or the like. The said arms a a are secured to the sides of the case and connected together at top by a screw bolt a. The side a of the case is hinged at bottom to the body of the case a so that when the said arms are disconnected access may be obtained to the interior of the case. The tape supply spool or reel 7) is mounted on a tubular axle I) passed through-holes in the arms a a and secured in position'by milled nuts 6 b screwed on its ends. One of these nuts must therefore be removed from the axle b when it is desired to open the case a. The position of the hinged parts when being operated to open the case a is indicated in broken lines in Fig. 1. The arms a a are provided with. dished guards b b on each side of the reel 6 such guards being respectively secured to the said arms around the apertures in them in which the tube 6 is engaged.

By the said invention a most effective advertising means is provided as change of the advertised matter may very readily be effected.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of theUnited States is 1. Tape printing apparatus of the kind hereinbefore referred to comprising in combination, a casing, a part of which is displaceable, a type carrier rotatable on a fixed pin within said casing, removable means on said pin for retaining said carrier in position thereon, means for supplying tape to said carrier, and type inking means.
2. Tape printing apparatus of the kind hereinbefore referred to comprising type inking means, a carrier for single letter type, type carried thereby, means for supplying tape to said type, and clamping means for securing said type in place comprising a screw nut, a bearing washer, and a flat piece of resilient compressible material for gripping the type.
3. Tape printing apparatus of the kind hereinbefore referred to comprising a tape supply reel free to adjust itself tothe proper position for feeding the tape to the type carrier notwithstanding variation in position of the part when the tape leaves the supply.
4. Tape printing apparatus of the kind hereinbefore referred to comprising a type carrier, type carried thereby, means for supplying tape to said type, means for inking the type, means for suspending the apparatus with freedom for angular movement within the place where the tape is to be supplied, and means for delivering the printed tape from the apparatus in a downward direction.
5. Tape printing apparatus of the kind hereinbefore referred to comprising in combination a carrier for single letter type and a tape supply reel free to adjust itself to the proper position for feeding-the tape to the type carrier notwithstanding variation in position of the part where the tape leaves the supply.
6. Tape printing apparatus of the kind hereinbefore referred to comprising a type carrier, type inking means, and a tape supply reel free to adjust itself to the proper position for feeding the tape to the type carrier notwithstanding variation in the position of the point where the tape leaves the supply.
7. Tape printing apparatus of the kind hereinbefore referred to comprising a type carrier, single letter type carried thereby, said carrier including a disk, removable resilient and compressible means for forcing said type into contact with the disk, pivotally mounted means for forcing tape into contact with the type, and a pivotally mounted inking roller for said type.
