To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, THoMAs R. Ooox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Abating Devices, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to smoke abating devices, particularly for use on locomotives, although capable of use in other relations. The invention has for its primary objects: the provision of a jet device of simple construction which can be conveniently applied, and in which the noise incident to jet apparatus is substantially eliminated. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of a locomotive backhead, with my improvement applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a section on the line 11-11 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section through the muffler.

The box 3 is secured rigidly in position by means of the studs 14:, and is preferably covered with lagging (not shown) which serves still further to deaden the noise from the steam jets.

upon their interiors, as indicated in Fig. 3, with a plurality of annular plates 16 turned to the rear at their inner edges.

By the arrangement as above described, the noise incident to the steam jets is substantially eliminated. The thick walls of the muffler box 3 transmit a comparatively small amount of sound, and the

11 and 12 conduct the noise which would otherwise escape from the end of the box, to a point beneath the cab floor. The mufflers 13 and 14: practically eliminate the noise at the ends of the

pipes

11 and 12. The principal objection hitherto found in the use of steam jets is thus avoided, and the apparatus is so positioned that there is a minimum amount of interference with other apparatus located in the cab. Other advantages incident to the construction will be apparent to those skilled in the art.

Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following.

1. In combination, a locomotive backhead having a series of passages therethrough, a muffler box extending transversely of the backhead, a steam pipe extending longitudinally of the box and provided with nozzles in alinement with said passages, an inlet pipe extending downwardly from each end of the box to points below the cab floor, with their ends expanded, and mufflers carried by such ends.

2. In combination, a locomotive backhead having a series of passages therethrough, a mufiier box extending transversely of the backhead, a steam pipe extending longitudinally of the box and provided with nozzles in alinement with said passages, an inlet pipe extending downwardly from each end of the box to points below the cab floor, and having their ends turned to the rear ang expanded, and mufflers carried by such en s.
