HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 19 16,.
Application filed July 14, 1916. Serial No. 109,207.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges and particularly to what are known as invisible hinges, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed particularly for use in connection with the doors of automobiles and similar vehicles and the construction and arrangement of which is such that the door may be detached whenever desired for any purpose without detaching that part of the hinge which is connected with the door frame; a further object being to provide improved means for holding the separate parts of the hinge against rattling in the operation of opening and closing the door, said means giving tension to the means for securing the separate parts of the hinge together.
The invention herein described and claimed is an improvement on that shown, described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent granted to me on the ldth day of September 1915, Serial No. 1,153,720, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved hinge with part of the construction broken away and in section; Fig. 2 is a plane and sectional view of my improved hinge showing one of the parts thereof in an open position; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one part of my improved hinge detached; and, Fig. 4 a plan and sectional view of another part of said hinge.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a hinge of the class specified, comprising two hinge butts a and b, and the hinge butt a, in practice, is secured to the door frame and countersunk therein in the usual manner and the hinge butt I) is secured to the door in the usual manner.
The hinge butt a comprises, in the construction shown, a U-shaped box member 0? having parallel sides a provided at their free edges with laterally directed wings a through which the screws pass for securing the hinge to the door frame. The side wings a of the box member 2 are provided centrally thereof with recesses a which open outwardly and on the inner sides of the recesses a the sides a of the Usl1aped box member are provided with laterally directed ears a which are cut from the material of said wings, as shown, and are provided with screw-holes a and the cars a close the recesses 64 on the inner sides of the wings a The hinge butt I) comprises the usual plate 6 provided centrally of its outer side with an L-shaped arm 6 and the free end portion 5 of the arm 5 is provided with a pivot pin hole 6 In the construction shown the hinge butt 2') with its arm 5 is composed of two separate similar parts stamped from sheet metal and secured together by spot welding, forging or in any other way, and each of these parts involve the plate member 5 and apart of the arm I also provide a supplemental hinge member 0 which comprises a U-shaped box part having parallel side plates 0 provided in their free edges with laterally directed ears 0 adapted to enter the recesses a and having countersunk screw holes c and the side plates 0 are provided in one corner of their free edges with similar inwardly directed lugs o and the part c is also stamped from sheet metal. 7
In assembling the parts of this'hinge, the L-shaped arm 6 of the butt 7) is inserted between the side plates 0 of the part c, and said parts are connected by a pivot pin passed through the hole I) in the arm 6 and other corresponding holes 0 in the side plates 0 of the part c, and while th part 0 actually forms a part of the butt Z), it is, in practice, secured to the butt a by means of screws (Z. After the part 0 has been connected with the arm 5 of the part b in the manner described, said part 0 is inserted into the hinge butt a as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in this operation the ears 0 of the part 0 enter the recesses a and the screws cl are passed through the holes 0 and a and the hinge is ready for use.
The construction above described is the same as that described and claimed'in thepatent above referred to and, in the practice of this invention, the rear corner portions of the butt a or the U-shaped box member a thereof, are cut out as shownat a to form side spring members a, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4c, and the rear corner portions of the part 0 of the hinge are correspondingly cut out as shown at c in Figs. '1, 2 and 3. 7
With this construction, in securing the part -0 within and to the hinge butt a, the inner end portion of the part c, or the corners 0 thereof bear on the spring members a of the butt (6 and the screws (Z will thereby be given tension as will be readily understood, or in other words, the screws cl for securing the part 0 in place will be always under tension due to the spring members a and as will be seen on considering Figs. 1 and f2, clearance is allowed between the ears '0 and ears a as shown at e, as well as between the inner end of the part 0 and the corresponding end of the U-shaped boX member a as shown at 6 WVith my improvement it will also be noted that the part 0 is held against rattling or movement of any kind by reason of the fact that the inner end thereof is firmly held in place by the spring members a and With this construction the operation of opening and closing the door is facilitated and all possible movement in the Way of rattling is prevented and the screws cl are also held against displacement by reason of the tension thereon.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hinge, a box-shaped part adapted to be secured in a stationary support, a U- shaped member detachably connected with Said part, and spring members connected with the box-shaped part and in connection with which said U-shaped member operates to hold the same against movement and to give tension to the means for securing the U-shaped member in the box-shaped part.
2. A hinge butt composed of main and suplemental parts, the main part being U- shaped in form and the closed end thereof being provided at its opposite sides with inwardly directed ears, and the supplemental part being also U-sh-aped in form and being adapted to be inserted into the main part, and the closed end thereof being provided at its opposite sides with recesses to receive said ears.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my intention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses thi- 12th day of July, 1916.
