COMBINATION DOOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1216.
Application filed February 9, 1916. Serial No. 77,199.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH V. SAVAGE, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Windsor, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination door locks and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide in combination with a door lock having a latch bolt means whereby the latch bolt may be readily retracted by using the knob at the inner side of the door and means which may be used at the outer side of the door for retracting the latch bolt the last said means being a combination mechanism which must be properly set before the latch bolt can be moved to a retracted position.
The invention essentially resides in the knob which is positioned at the outer side of the door and the said knob includes a sleeve turnably mounted on the shaft which connects the inner and outer knobs together. A disk is carried by the said sleeve and a series of tumblers are turnably mounted in the knob. The said tumblers and the disk are provided with notches with which the lugs of a movable bar may engage when the disks are properly positioned with relation to each other and the said bar is moved longitudinally. The said sleeve is provided with means for moving the latch bolt consequently when the bar is in proper engagement with the tumblers and the disks the outer knob is operatively connected with the latch bolt and the said bolt may be moved to retracted position. In the event that the bar is not properly engaged with the notches in the tumblers and the disk the outer knob is free to rotate without turning the sleeve and consequently the latch bolt cannot be moved to a retracted position until the sald bar is properly engaged with the notches of the tumblers and the disks.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the knobs of the lock. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the knob. Fig. 3 is a plan view of tumblers used in the knob. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of partof the lock.
The inner knob 1 is of the usual pattern and is mounted upon a sleeve 2 in the usual manner. The sleeve 2 carries at its inner end a lug 3 which is located in a substantially C-shaped opening 4 provided in the latch bolt 5 of the door lock.
The outer knob comprises a casing 6 havin at its inner side an annular extension 7. shaft 8 passes transversely through the inner and outer knobs and is secured to the casing 6 of the outer knob but the inner knob 1 is turnably mounted upon the said shaft. The shaft also traverses the length of the sleeve 2 and the extension 7. A sleeve 9 is turnably mounted upon the shaft 8 and extends through the extension 7 of the casing 6. The said sleeve carries at its inner end a lug 10 located in the opening 4: and which is adapted to encounter the side walls thereof when the sleeve 9 is turned. The sleeve 9 is provided at its outer end with a disk 11 which is housed in the casing 6. The disk 11 is provided at its periphery with a notch 12. Tumblers 13 are turnably mounted upon the shaft 8 and are housed in the casing 6. The said tumblers are spaced from each other by spacing washers 14; also mounted upon the said shaft 8 and inclosed within the casing 6.
The tumblers 13 are provided with arcuate openings 15 and the said tumblers are further provided at the opposite sides of the openings 15 with notches 16, the said notches in the different tumblers being located at different distances from the ends of the openings 15. Each tumbler 13 is further provided with a lug 17 and all of the said lugs extend through the side of the casing 6. bar 18 is slidably mounted in the casing 6 and the opposite ends of the said bar project beyond the inner and outer sides of the said casing. The bar 18 is provided at spaced intervals with lugs 19 adapted to enter the notches 16 and the notch 12 when all of the said notches are brought into alinement with each other.
When the tumblers 13 have been turned by using the lugs 17 to bring all of their notches 16 into alinement with each other and also into alinement with the notch 12 in the disk 11 the bar 18 may be moved longitudinally through the tumblers whereby the lugs 19 of the said bar may be moved into engagement with the notches l6 and the notch 12. Thus the casing 6 of the outer knob is fixed with relation to the disk 11 and the sleeve 9 and by turning the casing 6 the lug 10 at the inner end of the sleeve 9 'Wlll operate against the Wall of the opening 4 and move the latch bolt 5 to a the lock casing.
In the event that one who is unfamiliar retracted position in with the character of the lock should at? tempt to move the latch bolt5 to aretracted position by using the casing 6 of the outer knob and when a turning movement is applied to the casing 6 the said casing will rotate about the disk 11 without turning the same. Howevenif one who is familiar with the character of the device manipulates the tumblers 13 to bring the notches 16 thereof into alinement with each other and also in I-alinement with the notch 12 in the disk 11 the bar 18 may be moved in an inward direction whereby its lugs 19 are engaged in the said notches and thus the casing 6 of the outer knob may-be freely used for-turning i ithe sleeve 9 and this in turnwill move the latch bolt 5 from a projected to a retracted position in the lock casing.-
From the foregoing description'taken in conjunction with the accompanying draw- 25' ing it will be seen that a combination lock of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same may be readily manipulated by one familiar with its structure for the purpose of retracting the latch bolt of a lock -'Inechanism but that one who is not familiar with the mechanism of the device will be frustrated in an attempt to cause the latch bolt tomove to a retracted position in the casing of the lock.
Having described the invention What is 35 claimed is In combination with a lock having a movable bolt provided with an opening, a sleeve having a lug received in the opening in the bolt, a disk mounted upon the sleeve and Y the said notches are brought into alinementwith each other.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my s1gnature in presence of two witnesses.
