CIGAR-LIGHTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, T9116.
Application filed January 12, 1916. Serial No. 71,668.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that l[, EUGENE J. RoKEAoH,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improveinentsin Cigar-Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cigar lighter.
One of its principal novelties comprises means whereby the fuel .used therewith is prevented from escaping or evaporating when not being used.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a top view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows a right hand end view of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 2 as on the line 4, A; Fig. .5 is an enlarged section of Fig. 4 on the line 5, 5; Fig. 6 shows a side elevation of a detail of the invention and Fig. 7. represents an enlarged view of a portion of Fig. 4:.
The invention is shown to comprise the barrel 20, which has extending therefrom the bracket 21. The latter has fastened thereto the pyrophoric element 22. A fuel reservoir is located in the barrel 20 and has formed at one end the tapering outlet end 26, and at the other end carries in threaded engagement the cap 28. A tapered plunger valve is located in the reservoir 25 and engages the tapered outlet end 26 thereof. The plunger valve 30 has formed therewith thethreaded portion 32 and the pin 33 with the opening 34. A stop disk 35 with the perforations 36 is in threaded engagement with the threaded portion 32. A clearance space 38 is left between the end of the tapered outlet end 26 and the stop disk 35. A scratch pin 40 engages the opening 34 in the pin 33. A cord or other suitable substance 42 is wound around the pin 33. A spring 45 is located in the reservoir 25 and .one end thereof bears against the plunger valve 30 and the other end bears against the cap 28.
To use the invention the operator pulls the fuel reservoir 25 and its appurtenances (as shown in Fig. 6) out of the barrel 20. To supply fuel to the cord 42 the pin 40 is brought to bear against any object, whereby the plunger valve 30 will be raised from its seat and the fuel will flow from the reservoir 25. The Y operator next strikes the scratch pin 40 along the pyrophoric element 22 and the sparks produced ignite the fuel on the said cord 42.
Having described my invention What ll desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:
1. In. a' lighter of the character described the combination of a fuel reservoir, a spring actuated plunger valve in the reservoir, a pin carried by the plunger valve, a scratch pin'carried by said pin and a cord around the former.
2. he lighter of the character described the combination of a fuel reservoir with a.
tapered end a spring actuated plunger valve' in the reservoir having a threaded portion at its outer end, a pin extending from the threaded portion, a stop disk on the threaded portion and normally. distantv from the tapered end of the reservoir, a scratch pin carried by the other pin and a cord wound around the threaded portion and the pin thereof, the plunger valve adapted to be separated from the reservoir upon pressure being brought against the end of the scratch pin.
3. In a lighter of" the character described the combination of a barrel, a fuel reservoir detachably carriedin the barrel and having a tapered outlet end, a spring actuated tapered plunger valve normally seated in the said tapered outlet end and having a threaded portion extending therefrom, a stop disk' carried by said threaded portion normally separated from its accompanying end of the reservoir, a pin extending from said threaded portion, a scratch pin carried by the other pin and pyrophoric block carried on the barrel.
4.. lln a lighter of the character described the combination, of a fuel reservoir, a spring actuated plunger in the reservoir, a scratch pin for said plunger and an absorbent material on the said plunger to absorb thev fuel from said reservoir.
, Signed in the borough of Manhattan in. the county of New York and State of New York this 23rd day of December A. D. 1915.
