FLUID-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5,1916.
Application led April 29, 1918. Serial'No. 94,449.
To all whom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, CONRAD REHnEIN, a citizen of the UnitedVV States, residmg at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michil an, have invented a certain new and useful mprovement in Fluid-Presses, and declare thefollowing to be'a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains .to make and use the sama-reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of thisl specification.
Thisinvention relates to fluid presses for forming sheet metal, and hasA for its object a Huid press provided with an automatically opening and closing female die for the purpose of forming with rapidity articles which have an overhang so as to make impossible the successful use of asolid female die.
The press is especially designed for forming sheet metal automobile body partssuch as automobile shrouds or cowls.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the press with the dies closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the dies opened out, showing the shroud completely formed. Fig. 3 is a section on the line A-A of Fig. 1.
hese dies are intended to assist in the forming of-sheet metal by the use of fluid pressure, preferably the pressure of water. Inasmuch as the water pressure used is very high-being all the way from 600 to 1,800 lbs. to the square inchthese dies in fact, the complete set of dies will weigh anywhere from 10 to 25 tons.
.The female die is provided with a shapingconcavity a. Whatfwould ordinarily be called the male die is'provided with a water distributing chamber b into'which leads a passageway c connected with a source of water under pressure. d designates a gasket. set deep into the lower die to prevent its 4-5 being blown out by the water pressure.
The ram e is provided with a center key f bolted to its bottom, and. this key is provided with heels g havingfheir lower innerV corners chamfered. The two female die parts are slotted at their tops to fit over the key so as to be restrained from lateral movement inV their oscillatory motionsin opening and closing. Each die part is provided with a pair of -trunnions .k which 55 loosely play in the squared aperture formed must be very substantially constr/ucted, and
by the U bracket i bolted to the bottom of the ram. There are four U brackets for the four trunnions. To the ends of the bolster s is bolted a pair of obliquely disposed rails t. These rails serve to guide or force the lower ends of the two-part female die in toward cut away at the top so that in closing and 70 opening the die parts can tip toward each other to allow the heels g to clear the shoulders.
Thrust blocks are made integral bosses on the male' die casting and project over the 75 female die parts when closed in. These n thrust blocks are provided with bolts y which project through and have large nuts i z on their threaded ends so that shims lw l can'be pinched in between the large plate- 80 like nuts and the block to take up any play between the thrust blocks and female die parts. These thrust blocks are required on only one side as the taper of the male and female die parts prevents separation in the opposite directions.
It will be noted that the cowl or shroud is widest at the top and hence could not be pulled out of a solid female die without distorting it. 9
l What I claim is.:
`1. In a press, the combination'of a bolster,
a ram, a male die provided 'with a water distributing chamber, and a two-part female e die arranged to automatically open and close as the ram and bolster are separated and brought together.
2. In a press, thecombination of4 a ram,
a bolster, a male die provided with a water distributing chamber and attached to' the'100 bolster, a female die having two parts tending to separate and each of which is hung on thev ram and provided with a shaping concavity, and means for-.guiding'the tw'o female die parts. into closed position when 105' vthe ram approaches thelbolsterand thev die *is closed. together.
- ram provided with U-like brackets, a pair of female die parts each provided with a shaping concavity, a pair of trunnions loosely vpivoted in the said U-like brackets, a bolster, a male die secured to the bolster and provided with a water distributing chamber, and guiding means for throwing the female f die parts inwardly toward the male die as the ram and bolster come toward each other. 5. In a fluid press, the combination of a ram, a pair of female die parts pivoted to the ram and normally tending to swing apart, a bolster, a male die secured thereto and Aprovided with a Water distributing chamber, and guiding means on the bolster for throwing the female die parts in toward l the male die upon the approach of the ram to' the bolster. 6. In a fluid press, the combination of a ram, a key attached thereto, a pair of female die parts provided with lshaping conoavities and each provided with a slot so that the die v parts may straddle the said key,'means for pivotingl the upper ends of the female die parts to the ram, a bolster, a male die secured to the bolster and provided with a water distributing chamber, and means for guiding the lower ends of the female die parts in against the male die upon the descent of the ram.
7. In a fluid press, the combination of a ram, a key bolted to the bottom of the ram and provided with heels, a pair of female die parts pivoted to the ram and provided with slots in theirtops for straddling the rail and having recesses at the ends of the slots to form shoulders against which the,
heels of the said key may abut to resist the a fluid press, the combination of al 1,207,624 i. Y A
- ram, a pair of female die parts hung to the ram and tending normally to swing' a art a bolster provided with a pair of mc med rails, a male die secured to the` bolster and provided with a water distributing chamber,
whereby when the ram 'descends the lowdr ends of the female die will strike the inclined rails and be guided against the male die, substantially as described.
9. In a Huid press, the combination of a I ram, a female die hung to the ram, a bolster, a male die secured to the bolster and provided with a Water distributing chamber, and thrust blocks on the dies to overlap adjacent die parts to avoid side thrust.
`10. In a Huid press, the combination of a ram, a female die secured to the ram, a bolster, a male die secured to the bolster and provided with a water distributing chamber, thrust blocks on the dies to overlap adjacent die parts, and shims securable on the thrust bloc s to take up looseness.
11. In a Huid press, the combination of a ram, a key secured thereto and provided with heels, a pair of. female die parts pivoted to the ram and havin the upper parts of their adjacent faces obiquely cut away and having slots in the tops of the ldie parts so they can straddle the key and recesses at the ends of the slots to afford shoulders against which the heels abut when the die parts are closed together, a bolster, a male die and means for guiding and restraining the female die parts to close upon the male die.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification. 4
