Application med September 19, 1914. Serial No.62,539.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that ll, Josnrmnn D. linwis,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring Lake Beach, in the county of Monmouth mi@ State Of New Jersey, have 1nvented certain new and useful llmprovements in flair-ands; and l do hereby declare the 'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for holding the hair in place durlng violent exercise or when sleeping and has for its primary object to provi e a band which will not only hold the hair in the desired position but will permit free circula-v tion ofair about the hair or that portion of the head which the band engages.
Another object isto generally#I improve devices of the above mentioned character, so as to render them more practical, reliable and ecient in operationv and inexpensive to manufacture.,
'lhe above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specicationl and then more particularly pointed out in the claims. o
With reference to the drawings, wherein l have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts, Figure l is a plan view of my improved band, Fig. 2 is a 'side elevation of my band showing it in usa-Fig. 3 is a verticalsectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a vdetail sectional view taken on line 4--4 of lFig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters y of reference, the numeral l designates the preferably cloth netting.
body portion of my improved band which comprises a plurality of substantially elliptical strips of Hexible reticulated material The body portion l has a relatively stid'er flexible marl'ginal strip 2 stitched thereto and which serves to hold the'layers of.retic1 1lated material or strips in operative felation to one.
tively stiff serves to give body to the device.
another, the meshes in the layers of cloth netting registering so as to permit of air passing freely through the layers of netting to the head. '.lhe body portion 1 is larger at the center or at a point centrally of its ends and gradually tapers toward its ends from the center in both directions. Secured at each end of the body portion to the band 2 thereof is a flexible securing tape 3 which is provided with snap fastening elements 4. The strips or tape at each end coperate with each other to secure the device on the head of the wearer.
ln. use, when it is desired to retain or hold the hair in position so that it is prevented dropping before the eyes or becoming deranged otherwise, the band is placed about the upper forehead and secured at the rear of the head by placing the fasteners 4 into coperative position as shown in lFig. 4. The foraminous body permits free circulation of' air about the head and at the same time serves to securely hold the hair in -position. The marginal band 2 in being rela- .ln practice, l have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawingsl and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most emcient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, ll desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be re- .85 sorted to, when required, without sacricing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.
at is claimed is 1. ln a device for holding the hair od' of 90 the forehead comprising a body having a wide central portion and narrow ends, said body portion consists of layers of cloth netting, flexible means for holding the layers in position, and means for holding said body portion on the hair for the purpose specified. 4
2. ln a device for holding the hair 0H of the forehead comprising a lurality of substantially elliptical strips o cloth netting, a exible binding tape secured to the447i 'Y ln testimony whereof I aix my signature margillilal edges of seid strips1 aldated to sein presence of two Witnesses.
cure t e same in p ace, sai o y ortion adapted to encircle the front hair poi the JOSEPHINE D' LEWIS' 5 user, and means secured to the ends of said Witnesses:
strips to engage the back of the head there- JEMIE MINUGH,
