TYPE-PALLET.
Application led May 18, 1916.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALLEN B. CREEK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Type- Pallets', of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to type pallets, and the object of my invention is to provide a type pallet in which the clamps can be quickly and easily adjusted to any desired number' of type, and which will enable the user to quickly and firmly secure the type therein and quickly and easily release the type therefrom.
For a full understanding of my invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved type pallet with clamps ready to receive type, and with a part broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with type in position and grasped by the clamps, a part broken away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on Ann. of Fig. 5. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line B-B of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line C-C of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a side view of the triple threaded screw. Fig. 7 is a cross-section on line D-D of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one clamp and rack, part being,
broken away. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the second clamp and rack, part being broken away. Fig. 10 is an end view of the threaded portion of the triple threaded screw. Fig. 11 is an end view of the triple threaded screw.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a case provided with a flange 2 against which type 3 are alined, and a handle 4. Clamps 5 and 6 are slidably 'mounted on case 1 and are formed as follows: The upper portion of the inner sides 7 of said clamps are made smooth to engage type 3 when in use. At 8 and 9 are provided slots adapted to engage the upper and lower sides 1a and 1b respectively, of case 1. At 10 in clamp 6 is provided a hole adapted to slidably engage rod 11. 12 indicates a notch formed in clamp 6 to receive one end Specification of Letters Patent.

of rack 13 and in which rack 13 is rigidly fixed. At 14 is provided a second notch of the proper size to permit rack 15 to move freely therethrough, said rack 15 being rigidly secured in a similar notch as 16 in clamp 5. At 17 in clamp 5 is provided a notch of the proper size to permit rack 13 to move freely therethrough, this construction as described permitting the two clamps to move freely backward and forward when actuated as hereinafter described.
Clamp 5 is tapped with a triple thread as indicated at 18 to engage triple thread screw 19, the triple thread being indicated at 19a. Screw 19 is bored as at 2O in such a manner asto slidably engage rod 11, and a. key 21 is positioned in the outer end of said bore for the purpose hereinafter de scribed. Rod 11 is revolubly mounted in bearings 22 and 23 respectively in the opposite ends of case 1 and is provided at each end with a thumb-nut as shown at 241 and 25 respectively, the same being held in place by pins 26 and 27 respectively. When clamps 5 and 6 and rod 11 are in position, racks 13 and 15 are held in engagement with pinion 28 by means of legs 29 and 30 on bar 31, bar 31 being secured to the edges 1'=1 and 1b of case 1 by screws 32 and 33 respectively.
My improved type pallet, being assembled, is used as follows, it being assumed that clamp 5 is at all. times in engagement with screw 19. Rod 11 is turned into the position shown in Fig. 1 thereby permitting key 21 to move freely in keyway 35, and clamp 5to move freely back and forth on case 1 a distance equal to approximately one-half of the length of case 1. Rack 15 being rigidly secured to clamp 5 also moves freely back and forth in case 1 and thereby operates pinion 28 which in turn operates rack 13 which is secured to clamp 6. It is evident, therefore, that ay movement imparted to one clamp must also move the other clamp an equal distance and at ythe Vsame speed but in the opposite direction.
. elution removes key 21 from keyway 35 and places it in one of the notches 37, wherel upon screw 19 is caused to turn which in Y turn forces clamps 5 and 6 to tightly grasp the type positioned therebetween. A quarwhereupon clamps 5 and 6 may be quickly moved Voutwardly and the type removed. The triple threadis provided on screw 19 'and in clamp 5 in order that clamps 5 and 6 Ymay be moved into and out of engagement with type 3 quickly and without binding by one or two turns of rod 11. If a single thread were used rod 11 would have to be turned a numberof times unless the pitch of the thread were increased, which is not desirable as Vthe increased pitch would tend to bind the parts and so destroy the smoothness of its operation.
While I have herein described and illustrated one speci-fic form and size of type pal1et,it is understood'that I,V do not wish to limit myself to the specific embodiment shown, as minor changes in form, size and details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, as for instance, while I have herein shown and described a tool to be held and operated by hand it may also be adapted for use in an embossing machine without departing fromthe invention as pointed Vout in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: Y
1. A-type pallet comprising a case, a pair of opposed, coperating clamp members slidably mounted thereon, a rod revolubly mounted in said case; and passing through said clamp members, Vone of said clamp members being -tappedto'receive a threaded sleeve, and a sleeve slidablyfmounted on said rod and threaded vto engage saidtapped clamp member and means for revlubly engaging said rod and said sleeve.
2. A type pallet comprising a case, a pair of opposed, cooperating clamp members slidably mounted thereon, a rod revolubly mounted in said case and passing through said clamp members, and means operatively connected to said rod for imparting motion to said clamp members, said means comprising a sleeve threaded into one of said clamp members and slidably mounted on said rod, and a key attached to the bore of said sleeve, said rod having a groove formed therein adapted to engage said key, and one or more notches formed in the side of said groove adapted to receive said key.
3. A type pallet comprising a case, a pair of opposed, cooperating clamp members slidably mounted thereon, a. rod rcvolubly mounted in said case and passing through said clamp members, one of said clamp members being tapped with a triple thread to receive a threaded sleeve, and a sleeve slidably mounted on said rod and threaded with a triple thread to engage said tapped clamp member and means for revolubly engaging said rod and said sleeve.
4. A type pallet comprising a case, a pair of opposed cooperating clamp members slidably mounted thereon, a rod revolubly mounted in said case and passing through said clamp members, and means operatively connected to said rod for imparting motion to said clamp members, said means comprising a sleeve threaded into one of said clamp members and slidably mounted on said rod, and an inwardly projecting member attached to said sleeve, said rod having a groove formed therein adapted to engage said projecting member.
`5. A type pallet comprising` a case, a pair of opposed cooperating clamp members slidably mounted thereon, a rod revolubly mounted in said case and passing through said clamp members, and means operatively connected to said rod for imparting motion to said clamp members, said means comprising a sleeve threaded into one of said clamp members and slidably mounted on said rod, and an inwardly projecting member attached to said sleeve, said rod having a groove formed therein adapted to engage said projecting member and one or more notches formed in the side of said groove adapted to receive said projecting` member and extending below the bottom of said groove.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto ailiXed my signature this 13th day of May, 1916.
. ALLEN I). CREEK.
