COMBINED CLIPPER AND HAIR-CUTTING SCISSOIIEtS.
Specification of'Letters Patent.

Application filed August a, 1915. Serial No. 43,653.
T all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that ll, VICTOR E. BERGSTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented-new and useful Improvements in Combined Clippers and Hair-Cutting Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a combined clipper and scissors, presenting a structure adapted for operation in one position to provide an accepted type of clipper and 1n operation in a reverse position to provide an ordinary form of scissors. I The improved device contemplates a sum ple comparatively small structure of little or no complication in which the parts are arranged to permit the maximum efiiclency in either use, the operation of the parts being practically identical with that of the well known clippers or scissors.
The invention in the preferred form 0 details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in,
which:
Figure 1 is a plan of the improved device; Fig. 2 is a one edge view of the same; Fig. 3 is an opposite edge view of the same; Fig. 4c is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section of a detail. I
The improved implement comprises what may be termed a main plate 1 of approximately rectangularshape in plan being reduced at one end to provide a handle portion 2 terminating in the usualfinger grip 3. The main plate for the greater portion of its length is reduced in thickness as at 4, the cut away portion extending from a point above one edge of the plate to and through the opposite edge and from the free end of the plate to a point a slightdistance in advance of the handle portion 2. This formation presents in efiect a recess in the plate having abrupt shoulders .5 and 6 forming 1 the longitudinal and transverse walls of the recess. The outer surface of the main plate from a point above the shoulders 5 to the extreme lower edge of the plate is beveled as at 7, 'while the inner surface shoulder is smooth, intersecting the inclined edge 7 to form a shearing edge 8. The edge of the plate remote from the shearing edge 8 is formed to provide the usual cutting teeth 9 com- .nally of the main plate.
mon to clipper construction. The cooperating clipper member comprises a clipper plate 10 of a size to fit in the recess 4, the
of the recess, being equal in thickness to the depth thereof so that the inner surface of the clipper plate is approximately in line with the inner edge of the main plate below the shoulder 5. The clipper plate is formed with elongated slots 11 to receive set screws 12 which seat inopenings 13 in the main plate, so that the clipper plate is mounted for slidin movement longitudi- The recesses are preferably formed so that the heads of the screws are seated flush or below the proximate faces 'of the clipper plate to avoid projection. That edge of the clipper plate remote from the shoulder '5 is formed with clipper teeth 1-1 to cooperate with the teeth 9 so that inthe reciprocation of the clipper plate on the main plate a clippingoperation is secured. A pivot pin 15 is mounted in the main plate beyond the recessi and on this pin is supported a finger lever 16 of approximately angle formation, the free end of the lever having the finger hold or grip 17. At the juncture of the angle sections of the finger lever there is pivotally secured one end of a link 18, the opposite end of which is pivotally connected at 19 to the clipper plate. By this construction plate being of less length than the length movement of the finger lever in obvious,
and thereby cause such cooperation gripping teeth as is desired in implements of this type. 4
Pivotally mounted on the pivot pin 15 is an auxiliary member 20 in the form of a scissors blade, the forward or blade portion 21. of which is shaped toshearinglyjcooperate with the cutting edge 8 of the main plate, the blade in this operation bearing a ainst the inner surface of the main plate elow the shoulder 5. The auxiliary member terminates in a handle portion 22 arranged to cooperate with and in all respects similar to the handle portion of the main plate.
As thus constructed and arranged it is obvious that the operation of the finger lever in conjunction with the main plate produces a clipping operation, while the actuation of the respective handles 2 and 22 produce a scissors operation. If desired the handle 2 may be provided with a catch 23 of any appropriate type whereby the finger lever may be locked in inoperative relation when the device is in use as a scissors.
What is claimed is:
1. A combined clipper and scissors including a main plate formed with a recess, and provided beyond the recess with a handle portion, one edge of the plate being formed with clipper teeth, the opposite edge of the teeth being formed with a shearing edge, a clipper plate slidably mounted in the recess of tie main plate and having clipper teeth to cooperate with the clipper teeth of the main plate, a finger lev'er pivotally mounted in the main plate and connected with the clipper plate, and an auxiliary member pivotally mounted in the main plate and having a shearing edge portion to cooperate with the shearing edge of the main plate.
2. A combined clipper and scissors including a main plate formed with arecess, and
provided beyond the recess with a handle portion, one edge of the plate being formed with clipper, teeth, the opposite edge of the teeth being formed with a shearing edge, a clipper plate slidably mounted in the recess of the main plate and having clipper teeth to cooperate with the clipper teeth of the main plate, a finger lever pivotally mounted in the main plate and connected with the clipper plate, and an auxiliary member pivotally mounted in the main plate and having a shearing edge portion to cooperate with the shearing edge of the main plate, and means to hold the finger lever inoperative when desired.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
