THOMAS C. 'BAMFIELD AND GEGRGE RECHTER, OF ANGEL ISLAND, CALIFORNIA.
DOUBLE-MB CLEANER.
1,207,4tti8.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, i916.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, (l) THOMAS C. BAMFIELD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and (2) GEORGE RECHTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Angel Island, San Francisco Bay, in the county of Marin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Comb Cleaners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
llhis invention relates to double comb cleaners, designed to be connected to a toilet comb of the double type and adapted to clean the teeth upon either side of the comb,
whether said teeth be of the coarse kind on one side and ne on the other, or of the same type upon opposite sides of the comb.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a cleaner 'or double toilet combs, which shall be simple in construction and which is adapted to be secured to the comb to expose the teeth upon one side for use and to serve as a handle or back for the comb when in this condition, and to be readily adjusted so that the teeth upon the opposite side of the comb will be rendered available and cleanable by the device.
Toilet combs are rendered unsanitary and almost unfit for use after they have been utilized a short time, owing to the tact that small quantities of dandrut, hairs and anv 'foreign matter collect near the bases of the teeth and between the same. A. comb in this condition is very difficult to clean properly, and it is the object of this invention to provide means which can be quickly operated to clean all the teeth simultaneously upon one side of the comb.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is a side elevation, partially broken away, showing a double comb and a double comb cleaner made in accordance with this invention, the teeth of one side of the comb being exposed and in position for use, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one end of the comb and cleaner, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Referring te the drawing, the numeral l designates a double comb of the usual or any suitable form provided with teeth 2 upon one side of the central portion 3 and teeth 4.1. upon the opposite side thereof. The teeth 2 are shown as the coarse teeth and the teeth e as the fine teeth of the comb, but it will be understood that the teeth may be of the same character on opposite sides oi' the central bar 3 without affecting the operation of the cleaner. The end teeth 5 of the comb are larger than the other teeth as is usual in combs.
The cleaner comprises a casing made of two parts suitably connected together, and said cleaner may be made of thin sheet metal such as aluminum or of Celluloid or other plastic or compound material. One of the side members 6 of the cleaner is provided with an angular member 7 provided with a series of perforations S for the teeth 4, and enlarged openings 9 forthe teeth 5. The side member 6 is also provided with thickcned end portions l0. The side member ll is fitted in a recess in the member 6 and is provided with an angular cleaning bar l2 provided with perforations for the teeth 2. lSecuring clips 1.3 at the opposite ends of the cleaner are pivotally connected upon pins lll which extend through the members 6 and ll and serve Vto hold them firmly in place. The clips 13 are provided with angular heads l5 which normally extend over the end teeth 5 of the comb to hold the cleaner `in position to expose the teeth upon one side of the comb.
`When it is desired to clean the teeth 2, as shown in Fig. .11, the clips 13 are moved on the pins 11i over the rounded corners of the end portions l0 and the cleaner is then moved toward the ends of the teeth 2 to remove all the foreign matter, hair, dandruii', etc., from the teeth so that they may be readily wiped off and cleaned, the cleaner then exposing the teeth l upon the opposite side of the comb.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a comb cleaner made in accordance with this invention can be quickly operated to thoroughly clean the teeth of the comb and leave it in a. clean and sanitary condition, and that the cleaner may be utilized for the finer or coarser teeth, and can be quickly adjusted to expose the teeth upon either side of the comb.
Various changes may be made the den tails of construction without departing from i the spirit and Scope of the invention as de- Y having its side members perforated to receive the opposite set of teeth of a double comb therethrough, L-shaped latches pivoted at the ends of their longer arms to the casing intermediate the side members thereof,
:sail shorter arms of the latches adapted to be swung into engagement with one side member, and prevent the casing from moving downwardly over one set of the teeth of the comb, said latches being reversible to engage the opposite side member to permit the other set of teeth of the comb to be used and to hold one set of teeth completely inclosed within the casing while the opposite set of teeth is extended for use.
In testimony whereof we aiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
